‘The Deadlock’
2011 was the year of the revival of radical politics, in its emancipatory form (OWS, Arab Spring, mass protests in Europe) as well as in its reactionary form (Hungary, Scandinavian countries, etc.). However, the very massive visibility of these protests bears witness to a frustrating deadlock: what do the protesters effectively want? Do they contain a vision which reaches beyond moralistic rage?
Slavoj Zizek is the International Director of the Birkbeck Institute for the Humanities and Senior Researcher at the Institute of Sociology, UniversityofLjubljana. He is an internationally noted philosopher, critical theorist and political commentator. He is the author of many books, including The Sublime Object of Ideology (1989), Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Lacan… But Were Afraid to Ask Hitchcock (1993), The Ticklish Subject (1999), The Parallax View (2006), In Defense of Lost Causes (2008) and Living in the End Times (2010). Less Than Nothing: Hegel and the Shadow of Dialectical Materialism will be published by Verso in April 2012.

This seminar takes place in the 2011/12 seminar series of the Brunel Social and Political Thought Research Group, ‘Crisis, Transition, Transformation: Revolutionary Thought Today’. The seminar series aims to explore the challenges and opportunities for revolutionary thought that have been presented by the wave of protest movements that have swept around the world in the last years. Seminars are open to all.
The Brunel Social and Political Thought Research Group brings together leading scholars in the fields of social and political theory, the history of political thought and political philosophy. We seek to develop an innovative approach to political thought that emphasises the historical and political context of classic works and authors, while also intervening in contemporary debates. We organise a regular research seminar involving nationally and internationally noted figures in the field of political thought, a film screening series and annual international conferences and workshops. Research group members are key teaching staff on the Brunel MA in ‘Modern Political Thought: Violence and Revolution’.
