UNEVEN DEVELOPMENT

NEW EDITION FROM VERSO:

UNEVEN DEVELOPMENT: Nature, Capital and the Production of Space

By NEIL SMITH

New and updated edition with a new foreword by DAVID HARVEY
—————————–
“Smith provides a brilliant formulation of how the production of a particular kind of nature and space under historical capitalism is essential to the unequal development of a landscape that integrates poverty with wealth.” –– EDWARD SAID
—————————–
In UNEVEN DEVELOPMENT, a classic in its field, NEIL SMITH offers the first full theory of uneven geographical development, entwining theories of space and nature with a critique of capitalism.

Featuring groundbreaking analyses of the production of nature and the politics of scale, Smith’s work anticipated many of the uneven contours that now mark neoliberal globalization.

DAVID HARVEY’S new foreword highlights the increasingly uneven nature of the globalized economy, and notes that this inequality, along with accelerating levels of urbanisation and environmental degradation, have only accelerated since the book was first published. Smith’s analysis is thus more urgent and relevant than ever.

While globalisation has not led to a weakening of state power in the political sphere, it is increasingly difficult to conceive of distinct state economies – for example by the 1980s the majority of trade across national borders took place within corporations. National and international organisations rival states in economic power – in 2007 Harvard University had more money in its bank account than the GDP of some 39 countries. Thus, Smith argues, the global system can increasingly be defined more in terms of geoeconomics than traditional geopolitics.

In recognition of the dramatic changes in capitalism and its geography over the quarter century since this volume was written, Neil Smith has updated the text with a discussion of the current crisis of neoliberalism and the rise of geoeconomics.

UNEVEN DEVELOPMENT is a radical attempt to reconstruct the politicalbasis of society, in order to produce a genuinely social geography by encouraging a revolutionary imaginary.
———————————-
Praise for UNEVEN DEVELOPMENT

“A foundational text of great historical significance, constantly worthy of reappraisal…You will not be disappointed.” David Harvey

“Smith attempts no less than the integration of nature and space in the Marxian theory of capitalist development … he improves the clarity even of the arguments made in disagreement with him. His book should be widely read, used, and discussed.’ –ENVIRONMENT AND PLANNING

“UNEVEN DEVELOPMENT provides a theoretical discussion of immense range – from nature through space and the economy – whereby Neil Smith extends David Harvey’s Marxist conception of the geography of capitalism” – GEOGRAPHICAL REVIEW

“One of the most important books of specifically geographical social theory to be written in the English language in the last thirty years.” – Scott Prudham, author of KNOCK ON WOOD: NATURE AS COMMODITY IN DOUGLAS-FIR COUNTY
———————————
NEIL SMITH is Distinguished Professor of Anthropology and Geography at the City University of New York and Director of the Center for Place, Culture, and Politics. He is author or editor of nine books that explore the broad intersection between space, nature, social theory, and history and is co-organizer of the International Critical Geography Group. NEW VERSO BOOKS WEBSITE

ANGLO-AMERICA’S PREEMINENT RADICAL PRESS KICKS OFF 40TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS WITH THE LAUNCH OF PUBLISHING’S MOST INNOVATIVE WEBSITE
40th anniversary celebrations begin for Verso Books this week with the unveiling of a new website—one that at long last brings the largest independent, radical publishing house firmly into the twenty-first century: http://www.versobooks.com/

To the delight of Verso’s many fans, the new site—which has a fluid homepage able to completely shift in appearance day to day—not only beautifully showcases books and authors but is also home to the Verso Blog as well as discussion forums where users can start and engage in discussions about Verso’s books. The Blog is fully syndicated to both Book and Author pages—something never before done on a publisher’s website.

So excited is Verso at its sudden new online presence that the site’s launch is accompanied by a series of flash ads across outlets key to Verso’s audience such as the Nation, Bookforum, the New York Review of Books, Guernica, the Indypendent and the London Review of Books. The ads highlight 40th anniversary publications such as The Verso Book of Dissent and Tariq Ali’s The Obama Syndrome. Other 40th year titles include André Schiffrin’s Words and Money and Slavoj Žižek’s Living in the End Times.

Verso Books, launched by the New Left Review in 1970, now has offices in London and New York and publishes 80 books a year, adding steadily to its 40 year backlist—the entirety of which will be added to the new website by end 2011. Distributed in the US by W.W. Norton, Verso’s sales grew 23% during 2009 to reach $4m worldwide, and sales so far this year are growing at an even faster rate. It appears the time is ripe for radical presses …

For those wanting to join in the 40th celebrations, Verso is throwing a party this Friday September 24th in the courtyard of The Old American Can Factory in Brooklyn where Verso staff will be joined by authors, publishing colleagues, and fans young and old: http://www.versobooks.com/events/2-v40-a-party-to-celebrate-forty-years-of-radical-publishing

ERNEST GELLNER: AN INTELLECTUAL BIOGRAPHY

A NEW TITLE FROM VERSO

By JOHN A. HALL

 —————————–

“Ernest Gellner was a great twentieth-century intellectual, and John Hall’s fine biography conveys a vivid sense of the man and of the extraordinary range of his ideas, while commenting with great intelligence upon them. A must read.” Michael Mann, Professor of Sociology, UCLA

“The authentic voice of Ernest Gellner: honest, cool and reasonable. Mr. Hall is to be congratulated for reminding us of how much we miss it today.” WALL STREET JOURNAL

—————————–

Ernest Gellner (1925–95) was a multilingual polymath and a public intellectual who set the agenda in the study of nationalism and the sociology of Islam. Having grown up in Paris, Prague , and England , he was one of the last great Jewish thinkers from Central Europe to experience directly the impact of the Holocaust.

His intellectual trajectory differed from that of similar thinkers, both in producing a highly integrated philosophy of modernity and in combining a respect for nationalism with an appreciation of the power of modern science.

Gellner was a fierce opponent, in private as well as in public, of such contemporaries as Michael Oakeshott, Isaiah Berlin , Charles Taylor, Noam Chomsky and Edward Said. As this definitive biography shows, he was passionate in the defence of reason against every form of relativism – a battle that his intellectual inheritors continue to this day.

——————————-

Praise for ERNEST GELLNER: AN INTELLECTUAL BIOGRAPHY:

“This is a fascinating biography of one of the seminal and most interesting thinkers of the later twentieth century … John Hall has done a great deal to make clear the complex background and underlying motives of this remarkable man and thinker.” Charles Taylor, Professor Emeritus at McGill University in Montreal

Praise for Ernest Gellner:

“Gellner’s world is austere. But therein lies its attraction. Not much real comfort for our woes is on offer; the consolations peddled in the market are indeed worthless. What Gellner offered was something more mature and demanding: cold intellectual honesty.” John A. Hall

“A university don and intellectual of the first rank, Mr Gellner understood the needs of the press. He loved public debate and infuriated less nimble opponents with cutting wit and memorable epigrams. He poured out articles and books – more than twenty by one count – routinely apologising: ‘I’ve written another; I just couldn’t help it.’“ THE ECONOMIST

“As a philosopher Ernest Gellner was a maverick and a gadfly. Yet neither of these quite captures the uniqueness of his subversiveness.” Steven Lukes, Professor of Sociology, New York University

“Ernest Gellner was a scholar in the classic mould, whose intellect and influence could not be confined within national boundaries or within the bounds of any one academic discipline.” Edward Mortimer, Foreign Affairs Editor of the FINANCIAL TIMES

“Although known primarily as a philosopher, Gellner had a vertiginous perspective on life. He expanded his interests into the fields of anthropology and social and political theory, exposing with a dazzling and at times controversial lucidity the patterns by which modern society has been shaped.” TIMES

“David Glass, the sociologist, once said “with a touch of irritation”, that he wasn’t sure whether the next revolution would come from the right or from the left; but he was quite sure that, wherever it came from, the first person to be shot would be Ernest Gellner.” The GUARDIAN, obituary of Ernest Geller.

———————————

JOHN A. HALL is the James McGill Professor of Comparative Historical Sociology at McGill University in Montreal . His previous books include Powers and Liberties; Liberalism; Coercion and Consent; Intern ational Orders; and (with Charles Lindholm) Is American Breaking Apart? He taught at the Central European University in the early 1990s, when Gellner had returned to Prague, and gained an appreciation at that time of his background in Central Europe .

The Man in Black

THE COMING OF THE BODY

NEW TITLE FROM VERSO: The Coming of the Body

By HERVE JUVIN

—————————–

“After gods, after revolutions, after financial markets, the body is becoming our truth system. It alone endures, it alone remains.” Herve Juvin

—————————–

This startling book argues that scientific developments are redefining what it means to be human. Though we live longer than ever before, we are increasingly obsessed with youth and longevity, and increasingly disconnected from suffering, need and time. In the process, are we losing our morality?

The human lifespan has tripled in the last two centuries, ushering in a new kind of humanity which places the body at its centre. In the West, money, technology and medicine combine to deliver the body from war, suffering, death and religion. Even as state and global institutions crumble, this emergent body no longer struggles or resists.

The new body is rendered immune and newly resistant to the ravages of time, nature and capital. An emergent ‘industry of life’—from diets and plastic surgery to sex-free reproduction and virtual reality—further seeks to liberate the body from its biological functions.

Newly translated into English, THE COMING OF THE BODY weaves together a rich variety of sources to paint a cogent, if chilling, picture of this new paradigm. Technological advancement couples with demographic shifts to bring about a sweeping change in social relations. Adult adolescence becomes increasingly protracted and a new ethics of desire begins to emerge. Unabashedly hedonistic, the body becomes a machine of desire that eschews family, state and nation in favour of individual health, security and pleasure. In a society governed by contracts rather than ethical ties, money replaces traditional morals, fidelity and family in an insatiable quest for eternal youth.

——————————-

Praise for THE COMING OF THE BODY:

“Mr. Juvin’s book is being read attentively by philosophers and politicians, because it warns that pretty much all the values we consider human or humanist are collapsing…If we accept Mr. Juvin’s argument, the trinity of western ideals (‘liberty, equality, fraternity’) is in the course of being replaced by another one (‘health, security, pleasure’).” Christopher Caldwell, Financial Times

“Juvin’s central message is a sinister paradox: what communism set out to do, and disastrously failed to achieve, capitalism is in the process of realizing—the discredited messianic goal of reinventing humanity.” Perry Anderson, New Left Review

———————————

HERVE JUVIN is President and founder of the Eurogroup Institute and is the author of a number of books on economics, finance, and management. He was a columnist for LE MONDE and now regularly contributes to L’EXPANSION and ENJEUX LES ECHOS.

Revolution

NEW TITLES FROM VERSO’S REVOLUTIONS SERIES

MARY WOLLSTONECRAFT’S A VINDICATION OF THE RIGHTS OF WOMAN (introduced by SHEILA ROWBOTHAM)

THOMAS MUNTZER’S SERMON TO THE PRINCES (introduced by WU MING)

SHEILA ROWBOTHAM presents

A VINDICATION OF THE RIGHTS OF WOMAN

By MARY WOLLSTONECRAFT

Published 2nd August 2010

—————————–

PRAISE FOR MARY WOLLSTONECRAFT:

“Every day she made theories by which life should be lived; and every day she came smack against the rock of other peoples’ prejudices. Everyday too – for she was no pedant, no cold-blooded theorist – something was born in her that thrust aside her theories and forced her to model them again.” – Virginia Woolf

—————————–

“It would be an endless task to trace the variety of meannesses, cares, and sorrows, into which women are plunged by the prevailing opinion that they were created rather to feel than reason, and that all the power they obtain, must be obtained by their charms and weakness.” – MARY WOLLSTONECRAFT

Renowned feminist historian SHEILA ROWBOTHAM, author of Edward Carpenter and Dreamers of a New Day, introduces a new edition of MARY WOLLSTONECRAFT’S seminal A VINDICATION OF THE RIGHTS OF WOMAN, exploring Wollstonecraft’s unconventional and controversial life and the development of her groundbreaking work.

Originally written in 1790, Mary Wollstonecraft’s book remains one of the very first works of feminist philosophy. Groundbreaking in its demands for women’s rights, A VINDICATION OF THE RIGHTS OF WOMAN remains one of history’s most important and eloquent broadsides against sexual oppression. Although controversial, it was well received on its publication, and the backlash against Wollstonecraft only began after her death, when details of her private life were published by her lover, William Godwin.

SHEILA ROWBOTHAM is a Simon Professor at the University of Manchester . Her many books include the James Tait Black-shortlisted Edward Carpenter: A Life of Liberty and Love and Dreamers of a New Day: Women Who Invented the Twentieth Century.  She has written for many publications including the Guardian, The Times, the Independent, New Statesman, and the New York Times.

WU MING presents

SERMON TO THE PRINCES

By THOMAS MUNTZER

Published 12th July 2010

——————————-

“A locus classicus for those who wish to meditate on the bonds between religious activism and social upheaval, and to explore the volatile combination of theological innovation and political strategy.” – Alberto Toscano

—————————–

“Again and again, I hear nothing from the doctors of theology but the mere words of Scripture, which they have knavishly stolen from the Bible like malicious thieves and cruel murderers. They will be damned for this theft by God himself…” THOMAS MUNTZER

WU MING, the radical Italian authors’ collective, introduce this new edition of THOMAS MUNTZER’S sermons, alongside his final confession before being executed. Previously writing under the name Luther Blissett, WU MING are the authors of Q – the highly acclaimed novel dramatising the Protestant Reformation in which the protagonist fights alongside Muntzer in the Peasant’s War of 1524. The book also features an additional preface explaining the historical context of Muntzer’s sermons.

THOMAS MUNTZER was one of the most radical pastors of the Reformation. Originally a follower of Luther, he became frustrated at the limited nature of Luther’s stand against the church, later referring to Luther as “Dr Liar” and “the poisonous black raven”.  Demanding the realisation of the Kingdom of Heaven on earth, Muntzer went on to lead the Peasant’s War of 1524, for which he was later beheaded.

WU MING’S characteristically sweeping introduction shows how Muntzer has continued to inspire radicals and visionaries for 500 years, from Marx and Engels to 21st century anti-capitalist protesters. They also draw direct parallels between the Peasant’s War and the 1990s Zapatista Levantmiento – “the most inspiring peasant uprising of our time”.

——————————-

WU MING is a collective of five fiction writers. Their bestselling books include the novel Q, written under the pseudonym of Luther Blissett, and 54. Their website is www.wumingfoundation.com.

Jean-Paul Sartre

UNFINISHED PROJECTS: DECOLONIZATION AND THE PHILOSOPHY OF JEAN-PAUL SARTRE
By
Paige Arthur

A major rereading of the life and work of Jean-Paul Sartre, published on the 30th anniversary of his death (April 15, 1980)

Sartre’s anticolonialism proves, in Paige Arthur’s sophisticated rendition, far richer and more complex than snide dismissals of his ‘totalitarian’ impulses have allowed.” –— Samuel Moyn, Columbia University

———————————-

In this major rereading of Sartre’s life and work, Paige Arthur traces the relationship between the philosopher’s decades-long commitment to decolonization and his intellectual thought. Where other commentators have focused on the tensions between Sartre’s Marxism and his account of existential freedom—usually to denigrate one in favor of the other—Arthur shows that Sartre’s political engagement with global liberation movements and his philosophical framework were inextricably intertwined.

Closely following the postwar movements for decolonization, and then supporting the war of independence in Algeria, Sartre proposed an influential and uncompromising view of imperialism. Analyzing the Western attitude to the “subhuman” colonial subject, he offered an account of the social constraints applying to both ruler and ruled, and came to argue that political violence—on both sides—was a systematic consequence of the colonial order. Arthur’s rich and nuanced book locates Sartre within the political discussions of his time, while also looking forward to contemporary debates about new forms of imperialism and resistance.

“Since the late 1970s, anti-totalitarian discourse has reduced Sartre to an unwitting casualty of the Cold War split. Now, Paige Arthur counters the hysteria and moralizing of the last thirty years with a carefully reasoned and erudite study that reveals Sartre for what he was: a profound and consistent thinker of liberation and decolonization.”—Kristin Ross, author of May’68 and its Afterlives

“Overcoming today’s amnesia about Sartre as a founding spirit of ‘postcolonialism,’ Paige Arthur shows his relevance for our own encounters with ‘globalization.’”—Ronald Aronson, author of Sartre’s Second Critique and Camus and Sartre

Paige Arthur is Deputy Director of Research at the International Center for Transitional Justice. She has taught at both UC Berkeley and the New School University.
