CU EXPO 2011 – COMMUNITY-UNIVERSITY PARTNERSHIPS: BRINGING GLOBAL PERSPECTIVES TO LOCAL ACTION

CU Expo 2011 will showcase the exemplars in community-university partnerships worldwide, and explore and introduce creative ways of strengthening our local communities.

The conference is expected to draw over 800 people from Canada and around the world who are passionate about the power of community-university partnerships as a vehicle for social change. Students, community leaders, researchers, educators, funders, policy makers and others invested in community-building will be in attendance.

The CU Expo movement began in Canada as a response to individuals involved community-university partnerships needing a forum to share experiences, strategies and ideas. CU Expo 2011 will address the conference objectives, themes and streams through a variety of session offerings and opportunities for dialogue.

BUILDING SOLIDARITY: CAMPUS LABOUR STRUGGLES AND THE STUDENT CONNECTION

A forum to discuss and unite worker and student struggles at U of T

A brief overview of the working conditions at the University of Toronto shows that something is just not right: most contract faculty members have virtually no job security; largely racialized food-service workers are paid less than a living wage; post-doctoral fellows have zero input in the drafting of their contracts; female administrative staff members receive less pay than their male counterparts; and non-tenured professors fear termination for voicing opinions on contentious political issues.

Meanwhile, students at the U of T are also engaged in pitched battles to keep post-secondary education accessible and equitable. Campaigns to eliminate ever-increasing tuition fees, to defend equity-based programs under threat of extinction, to challenge autocratic room booking policies, and to overturn unrepresentative and unaccountable governing bodies are just some of the issues that they organize around everyday.

In short, there is a whole host of injustices that plague both workers and students on this campus. As a working group of the newly-formed University of Toronto General Assembly, Student-Worker Solidarity (SWS) seeks to challenge this state of affairs by bringing different campus workers together to speak with students about their issues, while also providing students with an opportunity to relay their concerns to workers.

With this forum, SWS hopes to begin the conversation in order to create new ways of thinking about and participating in the struggles of those who make our University what it is.

UFCW CANADA RELEASE: WORKERS’ ACTION CENTRE LAUNCHES PROVINCIAL INITIATIVE – “UNDERCOVER STORIES ON WAGE THEFT”

Wage theft, in its various incarnations, is a workplace plague in Canada which is evident in a variety of communities. It is a particularly painful in immigrant communities. Many employers continuously abuse Employment Standards protections of these precarious workers as a means to simple but effectively improve profits.

On behalf of the 250,000 UFCW Canada members across Canada, we say NO to Wage Theft and YES to the much needed advocacy initiatives by the Workers’ Action Centre in Toronto. No worker deserves to get less than their fair wage. Every worker deserves to be heard.

TEACHING ABOUT LABOR ISSUES AND THE WISCONSIN WORKER FIGHTBACK

According to labor historian Mark J. Naison, the movement of workers that began in Wisconsin and is now spreading to other states is “the most important labor struggle in the United States in the 21st century.”

The current uprising of workers in Wisconsin and other states presents a powerful opportunity to teach students about what the protests are about and why their teachers and neighbors are joining the struggle.  It’s an opportunity to critically examine issues, and to model for students’ responsible civic action and engagement in the political process.

As members of teacher unions, we have an additional responsibility, summarized by the late Howard Zinn in an interview published in Transforming Teacher Unions:

“If teacher unions want to be strong and well-supported, it’s essential that they not only be teacher unionists but teachers of unionism. We need to create a generation of students who support teachers and the movements of teachers for their rights.”

MAYTREE FOUNDATION – THE “PILOT” FOR RECRUITING TEMPORARY FOREIGN WORKERS FOR LOW-SKILLED JOBS SHOULD BE ABOLISHED

The latest Maytree discussion paper argues that the growth in the temporary foreign worker program is contrary to Canada’s social and economic interests. It suggests that those currently in Canada under the Pilot Project for Occupations Requiring Lower Levels of Formal Training should be granted permanent residence.

NO FARE IS FAIR – A ROUNDTABLE WITH MEMBERS OF THE GREATER TORONTO WORKERS’ ASSEMBLY TRANSIT COMMITTEE

NEW FRONTS IN THE FIGHT FOR EDUCATION

1. Thursday 24th February: Day X4

Walk out for education

Today’s papers have been full of reports that Oxford and Cambridge are set to charge the maximum £9,000 tuition fees and speculation that other universities could soon follow suit. An education from a top university could soon cost over £30,000 in fees alone. Leading vice-chancellors have already publicly urged MPs to back huge rises in tuition fees, a measure they believe is ‘reasonable’ – but these same Vice Chancellors are some of the highest paid bosses in the public sector with most receiving more than £200,000 a year.

The Vice Chancellors’ lobby group Universities UK will be holding its Spring Conference on Thursday 24th February – and students will be taking to the streets in protest for Day X4. Walkouts and protests in London will converge in a mass picket of the Universities UK conference, and this will be replicated by campus protests across the country.

2. Support the Strike

Students and staff unite for education

Last term students walked out and occupied to try and defeat the introduction of tuition fees and abolition of EMA. This term it could be our lecturers who take action. Every UCU member in Higher and Further Education is being balloted over strike action to defend jobs, pay and pensions.

The experience at King’s, Sussex and Leeds last year shows that when students come out and mobilise in support of strike action by staff it creates a united defence of education that can win real results. We encourage all student supporters of EAN to do everything they can to get their classmates to support the strike.

REIMAGINE THE UNIVERSITY

How could we transform the university, how could students and lecturers learn differently through more creative, critical and empowering processes, is it even possible to transform the university, or do we need to create an entirely different system?

We invite you to be a part of exploring and demonstrating an alternative educational system over three days. Be it a workshop, a lecture a discussion a film an event, we are calling… on students, lecturers and staff and others to come together and show another university is possible.

For a long time the university has been undergoing a process of privatisation.

Universities are now run as businesses, with students as consumers and lecturers as creators of products – knowledge has become a commodity that can be bought and sold. The sole purpose of university has become to train docile workers to perform functions within a capitalist system, to contribute to the enrichment of the few rather than the collective social improvement of all.

The recent Browne Report, written by former executive of BP, takes this process to a whole new level- proposing a removal on the cap on fees which will create an even more hierarchical education system, reducing research funding and rising fees to an estimated £10,000 a year. All this results in students taking on more debt for the same education, with lecturers being forced to carry out ‘economies exercises’ and staff working longer hours and harder for less money.

It is clear that the university system is becoming bankrupt and in need of profound change, but no-one can see an alternative, a solution, a way out.

As workers and students at different places within the university system, we can see a different way forward, we don’t have all the answers, but we have many ideas and are sure there are many more out there. We are putting on a three-day event across the university to facilitate the process of re-imagining the higher education system. We would like to explore how universities can become a place where creative and critical thought is fostered, where participants teach what inspires them, learn what they are passionate about, where people share and develop their skills and knowledge in order to create a more equitable and sustainable world, not simply for jobs and profit.

TAKE BACK EDUCATION: EDUCATION ACTIVISTS NETWORK – NATIONAL CONFERENCE 31st OCTOBER 2010

Under the new Con-Dem government, our education is under attack like never before. Education minister David Willetts wants fast-track degrees on the cheap and threatens to remove both the cap on university fees and the EMA for college students. University and college managers are slashing jobs, facilities and whole departments.

From the industrial action at King’s College and Tower Hamlets College to the student occupations at Middlesex University, we have been able to stop some of the most determined attacks. But the worst is still to come, and we urgently need to build and unite our resistance – and to lay out a different vision for education!

Speakers so far confirmed include:

– Alex Callinicos, KCL lecturer & author of “Universities in a Neoliberal World”
– Student campaigners & trade union activists from King’s. Sussex, Middlesex and others

After the success of our London-wide activist meetings and especially of the teach-in at King’s College in February, with around 400 delegates from union branches and student anti-cuts campaigns across the country, and against the backdrop of the ConDem budget, the Browne review and a growing number of disputes in both HE and FE, we are encouraging all students and education workers to save the date.

SOLIDARITY WITH THE KCL STRIKE

Lecturers at King’s College London have voted to take strike action this Tuesday – in a ballot that broke the record set at Sussex two weeks ago, which in turn had broken the record set last month in Leeds.  There is a report from the KCL dispute on the Guardian website.  It ends by asking readers “If jobs must go, how should it be done?” – but recent battles at Leeds and Kent put us in a good position to respond: No ifs, no buts, no education cuts!

Now that King’s is in the eye of the storm, solidarity from across the sector is crucial.  Nearly 1000 staff and students came together to march on London this Saturday against education cuts, and now we need to throw that same unity behind the KCL dispute.  Use the attached collection sheet to get donations in your college or workplace, and send photos of yourself holding up the placard to educationactivist@googlemail.com

DEFEND THE RIGHT TO PROTEST AT SUSSEX UNIVERSITY

Sussex University – where lecturers have recently balloted to strike with a record-breaking turnout – has been the scene of a growing student movement against cuts. Now management have decided to clamp down. In shocking scenes this Wednesday, they brought in riot police with dogs and tazers to attack a student protest.

They have since suspended at least 6 students, bypassing normal disciplinary procedures and barring them from campus until further notice, and taken out a high court injunction outlawing unauthorised protests on university property.

This is an outrageous attack on the right to protest. It is also an attempt to intimidate students and lecturers across the country out of taking action against the government’s education cuts. Our movement can only win if it is united, and if we do not stand behind the Sussex students we set ourselves up for being picked off one by one.

Hundreds of Sussex students have already demonstrated against this clampdown on Friday. Now, we must go back to that fundamental slogan “an injury to one is an injury to all”.  The Defend Sussex Campaign blog features an online petition in defence of the arrested and suspended students. Please sign it and circulate widely.
