This book is an introduction to Karl Marx as a radical educational thinker. Marx’s own schooling and education are examined to show his interest in educational issues was informed by his own experience. Educational themes in Marx’s thinking are identified, including the role of education in capitalist society, the contribution of education to human development and the character of education in a future society. These are placed in a historical setting by the author and related to public debates over educational policy.

Throughout his career, Marx identified education as key to the prospects of the working class. The story of this engagement adds a new dimension to the picture of his work as a philosopher, political economist and socialist revolutionary. The aspects of education that concerned Marx matched prominent features of his theoretical and political activity, and educational themes provided him with a critical application for many of his most important ideas.

The author explores Marx’ work on the British factory school system, his use of evidence from the reports of school inspectors, and the contemporary movement that led to the establishment of modern systems of public schooling. The final chapter relates Marx’s thinking to questions about the place of education in today’s society, showing how relevant it is for the twenty-first century.

ROBIN SMALL is Professor of Philosophy of Education at Auckland University and author of Marx and Education, as well as books on Nietzsche and phenomenology.

THE DYNAMICS OF VIRTUAL WORK: THE TRANSFORMATION OF LABOUR IN A DIGITAL GLOBAL ECONOMY

Globalisation and technological change have transformed where people work, when and how. Digitisation of information has altered labour processes out of all recognition whilst telecommunications have enabled jobs to be relocated globally. But ICTs have also enabled the creation of entirely new types of ‘digital’ or ‘virtual’ labour, both paid and unpaid,  shifting the borderline between ‘play’ and ‘work’ and creating new types of unpaid labour connected with the consumption and co-creation of goods and services.  The implications of this are far-reaching, both for policy and for scholarship. The dynamics of these changes cannot be captured adequately within the framework of any single academic discipline. On the contrary, they can only be understood in the light of a combination of insights from fields including political economy, the sociology of work, organisational theory, economic geography, development studies, industrial relations, comparative social policy, communications studies, technology policy and gender studies

COST Action IS1202 brings together an international network of leading experts from 29 European Countries with researchers from other parts of the world to develop a multi-faceted approach to understanding these phenomena. This international conference will open up an interactive dialogue between scholars both inside and outside the network.

Papers drawing on theoretical, methodological or empirical research are welcomed on the following topics:

The new international division of labour
Restructuring of value chains – theoretical perspectives
Relocation or Global sourcing? New patterns of spatial mobility
Does ‘place’ still matter, and why?
Interactions between the gender division of labour and the spatial division of labour.
Changes in skills and occupational identities in the digital economy
The creation of new occupational identities and the disintegration of old ones
Reskilling or deskilling? New forms of Taylorisation or new opportunities for creativity?
Changing patterns of working time, work-life balance and gender division of labour
New forms of organisation inside and outside the workplace
Value creation in the Internet Age
The monetisation of the Internet – theoretical and methodological challenges
Commodification and value creation in online activities
‘Prosumption’, ‘co-creation’ and ‘playbour’: conceptualising the shifts between labour, consumption and leisure activities
Virtual work and immaterial production (including crowdsourcing, goldfarming and other forms of online work)
Policy implications of virtual work
Implications of virtual work for employment in creative industries
User-generated content – threat or opportunity for employment?
Implications of virtual work for work-life balance and equality
Regulation of work and industrial relations in virtual work environments (the global context)
Implications of virtual work for work-life balance and equality
Effects of virtual work on occupational profiles, skills and HR practices

The conference will be organised in four streams, with plenary sessions on each day.

All submissions will be subject to peer review.

INTERNATIONAL INITIATIVE FOR THE PROMOTION OF POLTICAL ECONOMY TRAINING WORKSHOP IN MARXIST POLITICAL ECONOMY

Following the success of previous Training Workshops, the International Initiative for the Promotion of Political Economy will run a one-day introductory training workshop in Marxist Political Economy on 6 November 2013 at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London, the day before the start of the annual Historical Materialism Conference (also at SOAS).

We are seeking an audience of engaged participants, including undergraduate, postgraduate students, junior academics and activists, who have a particular interest in acquainting themselves with the basic principles of Marxian political economy.

As this is an introductory workshop, it will assume no prior knowledge and will be led by Simon Mohun and Alfredo Saad-Filho.

IIPE TRAINING WORKSHOP 3

Following successful Training Workshops in Marxist Political Economy in London in June 2012 and March 2013, IIPPE announces its 3rd Training Workshop. This will be held over 1 day on Monday 8 July at the ISS in The Hague, the day before the start of the IIPPE Annual Conference, to take place also at the ISS in The Hague. This is therefore an excellent opportunity to combine the Training Workshop with attendance at the IIPPE Annual Conference.

While we cannot fund travel costs, we have space for 90 participants, and for 40 of these we have secured funding for 4 nights accommodation (7 July to 10 July). If you wish to attend the Training Workshop, please send a short paragraph giving your reasons to Elisa van Waeyenberge (ew23@soas.ac.uk).

Please also make it clear whether you are applying for one of the 40 funded places. We expect oversubscription for these funded places; if so we will give priority to students and others who cannot obtain institutional funding to attend the Conference.

Please apply AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. We hope to allocate the funded places by the end of April at the latest.

STUDY DEMOLISHES THE MYTH THAT U.S. WORKERS LACK SKILLS

Over the last few years, the media has blared warnings that a “skills gap” among American workers is preventing full economic recovery.

According to this narrative, the problem is not an inadequate supply of family-sustaining jobs; it’s a workforce lacking in skills, training and education. The skills gap thesis has been spread by influential pundits like the New York Times’ Thomas Friedman, top CEOs like Caterpillar’s Doug Oberhelman, and PIMCO hedge fund owner Bill Gross, who declared, “Our labor force is too expensive and poorly educated for today’s marketplace.”

But in a study released this week called “The Skills Gap and Unemployment in Wisconsin: Separating Fact from Fiction,” urbanologist Marc Levine, a professor of history and economic development at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, applies a data-laden sledgehammer to this notion. And while Levine’s report focused primarily on Wisconsin, his critique of the “skills gap” notion has national implications.

‘SILENT GRINDING, BIT BY BIT’: IN THE OCCUPATION AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SUSSEX

The last two years have seen an explosion of student strikes from Chile to Italy to Quebec. These do not yet account for a full-blown student revolt, but they are seeds of political resistance that are some of the most promising in quite some time. They have been remarkable in their tactical ingenuity, the steadfastness of the student rebels and the militancy of demands for the decommodification of education and the universality of access. The fierceness of the austerity agenda in Britain is opening up a new front in student struggles.

After three weeks, an impressive student occupation at the University of Sussex against the privatization of services on campus is still in full-swing, even expanding, with flash occupations and disruptions of different buildings and events on campus last Friday. On February 28 I sat down with Maia Pal, a leading organizer of the campaign, to discuss its origins and dynamics to date.

This seminar focuses on diversity and difference in young people’s transitions at the end of secondary education in England. While recent media interest has focused on ‘AAB’ and transition to high tariff universities, for many students transitions involve a diversity of routes other than A-levels, and do not necessarily mean moving on to HE. Drawing on their extensive research, Professor Ann Hodgson and Professor Alison Fuller offer their analyses of the challenges and complexities of youth transitions at a time of policy turbulence and change in education.

 

14+ participation, progression and transition to higher study and employment: an ecological framework

Ann Hodgson, Professor of Education and Co-Director of the Centre for 14+ Research and Innovation, Institute of Education, University of London

This presentation will propose a possible new way of looking at the issue of school-to-work and school–to-higher education transitions through a three-dimensional ecological model, focusing in particular on ‘local learning ecologies’.  I will suggest that this model can be used as a means of understanding the interaction of a range of multi-level factors that play out at the local level to either constrain or support the participation, progression and transition of young people within upper secondary education and into higher study and employment in England.

 

Hybrid qualifications, institutional expectations and youth transitions: a case of swimming with or against the tide

This presentation uses the concept of hybrid qualifications to expose the way in which the English system, with its longstanding academic and vocational divide, fails to support the transitions of young people with ‘average’ educational attainment. The concept of hybrid qualifications was developed during EU funded research undertaken in 2010 – 11 with project partners from Germany, Austria and Denmark. It was conceived to mean those qualifications generally achieved by young people aged 16-18 which would facilitate entry to the labour market or access to university.  In the English system we defined Level 3 qualifications such as the BTEC National suite of Diplomas, Applied A-Levels, the Advanced Diploma and the qualifications contained within the Advanced Apprenticeship as contenders for hybridity.  Compared with the clear pathways for entry to bachelor degrees that are articulated for those who have attained traditional academic qualifications (namely A-levels), the routes for those leaving school with vocational qualifications are poorly and narrowly-defined and fragile.  Using the rich, narrative data gathered from interviews and focus groups with students, tutors and key stakeholders, we illustrate how for this group transition often involves ‘swimming against rather than with the tide’.

 

Ann Hodgson has worked as a teacher, lecturer, LEA adviser, editor and civil servant, joining the Institute of Education, University of London in 1993, where she is now a Professor of Education, Assistant Director (London) and Co-director of the Centre for Post-14 Research and Innovation. Current projects include Global Learning for Global Colleges, funded by the Department for International Development; Developing a National Qualifications Framework for Qatar; Improving professional learning for the Institute for Learning; acting as the academic partner for London Councils on 14-19 education and training; developing 14+ Progression and Transition Boards with a number of local authorities; and surveying teacher and lecturer views of 14-19 policy in partnership with NUT and UCU.  Ann has published widely in a variety of forms on topics related to post-14 education policy, vocational education and training, lifelong learning and curriculum and qualifications reform.  Recent books include: Post-compulsory education and lifelong learning across the United Kingdom: policy, organisation and governance (IOE Publications 2011), co-edited with Ken Spours, and Martyn Waring; Education for All: the future of education and training for 14-19 Year Olds (Routledge 2009), co-authored with other Nuffield Review directors and researchers; Education and Training 14-19: curriculum, qualifications and organisation (Sage 2008), co-authored with Ken Spours; and Improving Learning, Skills and Inclusion: the impact of policy on post-compulsory education (Routledge 2008), co-authored with Frank Coffield, Sheila Edward, Ian Finlay, Ken Spours and Richard Steer.

Alison Fuller is Professor of Education and Work, and Director of Research Centre in Southampton Education School, University of Southampton (www.soton.ac.uk/education). Alison has directed many research projects in the areas of education – work transitions, apprenticeship, vocational education and training, workplace learning, and widening participation including for the ESRC, EU and EHRC and has published widely. She has recently completed a project for the Gatsby Charitable Foundation on technician level roles in the healthcare sector. Her most recent book (edited with Professor Rachel Brooks and Dr Johanna Waters) Changing Spaces of Education: new perspectives on the nature of learning has recently been published by Routledge (2012).

On the launch of the SCETT Publication: In Defence of Teacher Education (March 2011), Professor Dennis Hayes, Hon. Secretary, the Standing Committee for the Education and Training of Teachers (SCETT) said:

“Today SCETT publishes this important short work, In Defence of Teacher Education, which provides a unique defence of education as a field of study essential for future teachers. It is addressed to the Coalition government but should be read by all teachers, teacher trainers, academics and all those with an interest in ensuring that our children are taught by teachers who understand what they are doing and who believe that teaching is a profession and not merely a ‘craft’.  

The 15 contributors include leaders from all the major teaching trade unions, national educational organisations and distinguished academics. CANADIAN WORKER CO-OP FEDERATION (CWCF) URGES GOVERNMENT SUPPORT FOR CONVERSIONS TO WORKER CO-OPS

The Canadian Worker Co-operative Federation (CWCF) has called on the federal government to provide funding to support conversions to worker co-ops.

Appearing before the Standing Committee on Finance on February 15, CWCF president Alain Bridault and executive director Hazel Corcoran said worker co-ops could meet the challenge posed by the imminent retirements of large numbers of “baby boomers”.

“We know that with the retirement of very large numbers of workers from the baby-boomer generation, we shall face a serious problem of manpower shortages,” Mr. Brideault said, adding that the democratic and participatory nature of worker co-ops would be attractive to potential employees.

WISCONSIN SPIRIT SWEEPS ACROSS THE MIDWEST

The spirit of Wisconsin is inspiring union members in Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan to jam capitol buildings by the tens of thousands to fight a raft of union-busting bills in their states.

By aiming their attack against such a broad range of working people—teachers to state workers to building trades—conservative legislators and their shadowy billionaire funders unintentionally created the conditions for unity.

By making their aggression so naked, the legislators scotched the usual impulse from most labor leaders to think they could negotiate a way out behind closed doors. When the right took off the gloves, labor finally put up its dukes.

CULTURAL CONSULTING SERVICES PROMOTER, MAYWORKS

Mayworks Festival of Working People and the Arts Contract Position: Cultural Consulting Services Promoter (Contract position, March – May 2011)

This short term contract position will undertake targeted outreach and promotion of Mayworks’ cultural consulting services to the union movement.

The primary outcome is the expansion and diversification of Mayworks’ consulting services in order to maintain and increase earned revenue through consulting services. The contract will also serve to raise the profile of the festival in the labour movement as well as build and maintain festival audiences.

General overview of activities to be implemented*:

March/April 2011
– Identify upcoming union conferences and conventions
– Identify unions for targeted outreach
– Design and print consulting services flyers, ‘give-away’ item and slide show
– Print business cards

April 2011
– Mail out of promotional flyer with letter, follow-up with email, phone calls
– Start targeted outreach to identified unions for general promotion
– Set meetings, start making any travel arrangements**
– Pitch specific event programming to unions with upcoming conferences, meetings or conventions
– Meet with unions and continue outreach

May 2011
– Negotiate any new contracts
– Look into social enterprise umbrella organisations that would support Mayworks or provide networks
– Table at union conferences
– Any last meetings, outreach, contract negotiations
– Wrap up promotional work
– Write final report
– Evaluate success of promotional tour, and next steps

*At times, working in consultation/collaboration with graphic designer **Potential travel to Ottawa for promotional meetings with Canadian Union of Postal Workers and the Public Service Alliance of Canada. Travel expenses will be covered by Mayworks.

Hours of work and remuneration:
The total work hours for the initiative is 100 hours from March 2011 through May 2011 (at least 40 hours per month April and May 2011).  Remuneration for the project is $2710 which includes a percentage in lieu of all fringe benefits.

The applicant should have the following qualifications:
– A minimum of two years experience in event/project development and coordination
– Good working knowledge of the labour movement and social justice/activist communities
– Established networks within the labour movement an asset
– Good negotiation, outreach and promotional skills
– Ability to meet tight deadlines
– Ability to work with union members and manage different needs
– Strong written and oral communication skills

The DPR conference returns to Plymouth in its tenth year, bringing together learners, teachers, researchers and policy-makers from the international education community to look at the crises in contemporary education, not just at post-compulsory level but across the board from pre-school to post-graduate. The need for change in education has never been more urgent. The conference will bring colleagues from around the world to think radically about education changing, and needing to change.

The conference will be divided into 7 streams:

– What is the point of education?
– Anticipative education: policy and practice
– Education in a funding crisis
– Widening participation: for real
– Education across the boundaries of faith: challenging fear and hatred
– The future of post-compulsory education: the internet and 
   the role of the university
– DPR: open

The DPR conference is a site for the radical critique of discourse, power and resistance within and beyond the discipline of education, looking at concerns which are currently troubling learners, teachers and researchers engaged at all stages from pre-school to postgraduate. The conference looks more widely at the impact on education of powerful interests in and behind the policy-making apparatus as they exert their influence to reshape the goals and ethos of learning, teaching and research. DPR transgresses inter-disciplinary boundaries, attracting scholars from across the humanities and social sciences. A continuing concern of the conference is the contested issue of research methodology and the related issues of the problem of knowledge.

The conference has an international reputation, drawing delegates from a wide range of the developed and developing nations and attracting world-class keynote speakers.

The DPR journal, Power and Education (www.wwwords.co.uk/POWER), was launched in 2009.
