The Social Science Centre (SSC) in Lincoln is a self-organised co-operative higher learning provider that is democratic at all levels of its organisation. The scholars who are members of the Centre work and study together whether they are traditionally students or teachers. One of the aims of the Centre is to analyse and dissolve the tensions in the relationships between research and teaching, and students and academics. Set up by academics from the University of Lincoln, the Centre has no relationship with the University, although it is a critique of the formal institution as a dysfunctional neoliberal arrangement in many ways. The SSC aims to ‘reinvent’ the University and transform the scholars’ relationship to knowledge in order to insert their own experiences into theoretical knowledges that aim to emancipate them as active change agents. The SSC engenders provocations, conversations and discussions that enliven the notion that all those who are involved in active knowledge work should become (co-) producers of knowledge. Two of the (student) scholars and an academic from Lincoln will be visiting the Anarchist Research Group to talk about the centre and their experiences studying there.

In this session, we would like to tell you a little about our experiences with the SSC and then invite a discussion on the SSC, self-organised education and the relationships between education, learning, and social change.
The Social Science Centre provides free public higher education in the city of Lincoln and emphasises the collective and collaborative nature of education. The Centre was opened in 2011 by academics and students and Lincoln residents who feel passionately that those wishing to study higher education should not have to take on the burden of debt. There is no fee to pay when joining the Centre, only what you can afford. Free also means freedom to study outside of the current disciplinary structures of higher education around topics and issues that are of direct concern to you and your local community.

The rise of Big Data is changing how we think about the world, or so it is claimed. The advent of ‘algorithmic regulation’ spells the death of politics, but might also allow us to ‘stop wars before they happen’. Datafication enables the rise of new paradigms in the sciences and humanities, but may also entail the ‘end of theory’. Does the rise of data-driven knowledge underscore the need for human interpretation and judgement, or does it confirm the post-humanist rejection of modernist assumptions about how we understand and act to transform the world? Big Data is still an emerging concept and its future uses and implications remain unclear, but this makes the development of critical perspectives more, rather than less, important.

The fifth international conference on The Social Pathologies of Contemporary Civilization explores the nature of contemporary malaises, diseases, illnesses and psychosomatic syndromes in their relation to cultural pathologies of the social body. Usually these conditions are interpreted clinically in terms of individualized symptoms and framed in demographic and epidemiological profiles. They are represented and responded to discretely, as though for the most part unrelated to each other; each having its own professional discourse of etiology, diagnostics, therapeutics, as well as a task force developing health strategy and policy recommendations and interventions. However, these diseases also have a social and cultural profile, one that transcends the particularity of their symptomology and their discrete etiologies. These social pathologies are diseases related to cultural pathologies of the social body and disorders of the collective esprit de corps of contemporary society. They arise from individual and collective experiences of profound and drastic social changes and cultural shifts.

Multi-disciplinary in approach the conference addresses questions of how these conditions are manifest at the level of individual bodies and minds, as well as how the ‘bodies politic’ are related to the hegemony of reductive biomedical and individual psychologistic perspectives. Rejecting such a reductive diagnosis of contemporary problems of health and well-being, the central research hypothesis guiding the conference is that contemporary epidemics are to be analysed in the light of radical changes in our civilization and of the social hegemonization of the biomedical and psychiatric perspective.

A particular focus of the conference is the role of humanities and social sciences in helping to understand the connection between social transformations and psychiatric perceptions of health and well-being. The conference invites papers offering analyses of social malaises and the health of civilization from faculty, students and researchers in fields of philosophy, sociology, social theory, psychology, and anthropology.

 

Special sub-themes are the following:

􀁸The invented self– What is the status of the late modern subject? We live in so-called ‘neo-liberal’ times in which we experience an intense, marketed pressure to ‘be oneself’, as well as an extreme difficulty to ‘be a self’. Is our alleged individual freedom a strongly directed one? If so, how can we invent ourselves differently? And how should we understand the connection between this newly invented and that socially directed self?

􀁸The sympathetic self– Is a re-ethicization and moral regeneration of political, moral and libidinal economies possible? The domestic economics of the soul need to be scrutinized, ‘miraculous’ and healing social powers – such as the redemptive and transfiguring powers of beauty and love, and the power of gift relations – need to be explored in terms of their capacity to reverse pathogenic vicious circles of individuated egotism into saludogenic virtuous spirals of care, care of the self and care for others.

􀁸The diagnosed self– In most late modern societies in the West, we find a high prevalence of many psychiatric disorders. Such statistics have been known for years, but there is much uncertainty about how to interpret them. How do adults experience the process of receiving these diagnoses, and what does it mean for them to have their experience of suffering filtered through a diagnostic and psychiatric vocabulary?

􀁸The measured self– Research evidence is widely held as a key influence on mental health policy and practice. Whilst hypothesis testing in randomised controlled trials is held as the ‘gold standard’, qualitative research exploring people’s experiences continues to occupy a more marginal position, even though these experiences inform important inter-subjective phenomena. What is and what could be the specific role of qualitative research in contemporary mental health care?

􀁸The amnesiac self– The fading of individual and collective memory due to ongoing processes of individuation and acceleration and to experiences of shock, trauma, repression and aphasia in the psychic life of individuals and societies is amplified in contemporary contexts. Lacking memory, persons and societies live in a liminal extended present and become prone to solipsism and to manipulation. What is forgotten – and what can be remembered – is one of the most urgent ethical-political problems of our age.

The ongoing global social crisis, and its generalization of misery, has proven to be a challenge for a group of theoretical orientations that advance a critical theory of society. This stream aims to address these unhappy circumstances by examining the topic(s) of critical theory and crisis.

Possible topics include:

* Accounts and/or criticisms of different theories of crisis in the critical theories of society of Adorno, Horkheimer, Benjamin, Sohn-Rethel, Grossmann, Pollack, Neumann, Marcuse, Krahl, Schmidt, Habermas, Honneth etc.

* Modifications of these, or other figures, critical theories of society to account for the contemporary social crisis.
New formulations of critical theories of society that address the current crisis.

* Criticisms of new formulations of critical theories of society that address the current crisis.

* New interpretations of traditional concepts in critical theory such as ‘reification’, ‘the legitimacy crisis’, ‘recognition theory’, ‘dialectical social theory’, ‘philosophies of history’ etc. in light of the current crisis.

* New interpretations of the work of figures that were a seminal influence on the critical theory of society, such as Marx, Weber, Freud, Nietzsche, Lukacs etc. in relation to a critical theory of crisis.

* The utilization of concepts such as social reproduction, surplus population, secular crisis, creative destruction, negativity, nihilism etc. in critical theories of crisis.

ANARCHISTS, MARXISTS, AND NATIONALISTS IN THE COLONIAL AND POSTCOLONIAL WORLD, 1870s-1940s: ANTAGONISMS, SOLIDARITIES, AND SYNTHESES

CALL FOR PAPERS

EUROPEAN SOCIAL SCIENCE HISTORY CONFERENCE (ESSHC) 2013

From its inception in the First International, the anarchist and syndicalist movement played a significant role in the colonial and post-colonial world as an influential force in revolutionary, national liberation, and anti-imperialist movements. While this role has received increasing attention in a growing scholarship, the literature remains underdeveloped and rather limited. The intersections between anarchism and syndicalism, and other Left oppositional currents, including Marxist and nationalist movements, are understudied and lack systematic examination especially with respect to the global South. Such intersections provide an important index of anarchist and syndicalist influence by drawing attention to their role in larger coalitions as well as their imprint on other movements and ideologies; conversely, to properly understand the history of other Left and labor currents it is necessary to take into account their interactions with anarchism and syndicalism. These interactions assumed a wide range of forms:  although historical antagonisms between anarchism and Marxism often shaped their relations, there were also many instances of solidarity and collaboration; while anarchism generally opposed nationalism in principle, it cooperated with a surprising number of nationalist movements; finally, anarchism and syndicalism contributed key elements to a broad spectrum of oppositional currents that reflected syncretic ideologies, organizational forms, and practices.

We invite papers that examine examples of antagonisms, solidarities, and syntheses between anarchism and syndicalism on one hand, and Marxist and nationalist currents on the other. The papers should address historical movements, rather than intellectual history, narrowly conceived; they should analyze intersections, not parallels or apparent similarities between different currents; and explore the complex relations and overlaps between anarchist, Marxist, and nationalist movements. Case studies should focus on the colonial and post-colonial world (Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean).

Possible lines of enquiry include interactions in the following areas:
– national liberation and anti-colonial struggles
– anti-imperialist networks and alliances
– agrarian struggles
– international labor solidarity, trade unionism, as well as activities in state-run unions
– struggles against colonial and neo-colonial racial oppression
– interracial, multiethnic, local/diasporic solidarities
– student and worker alliances
– underground networks and struggles

This CFP is for two planned panels to be held at the European Social Science History Conference in Vienna, Austria, April 23-26, 2014.

Kelly Pike did her PhD in the School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. Her dissertation focused on examining the factors that lead to variation in workers’ perceptions of compliance in Lesotho’s clothing industry. As part of her fieldwork, she spent two years living in Southern Africa and, a Canadian, has recently returned for post-doctoral research with Leah Vosko at York University. There, she is working on building a global employment standards database, comparing employment standards enforcement across Canada, the US, UK and Australia. Kelly also teaches the Negotiations course at Woodsworth College, and works as a part-time consultant for the World Bank, doing comparative research on labour standards compliance in Lesotho and Kenya’s clothing industries.

Roxana Ng passed away at Sunnybrook Hospital after a short and courageous fight with cancer. She leaves behind her father Evan and mother Katherine, and brothers, David and Calvin and their partners, Gio and Katherine. Roxana was generous of spirit, committed to activism and social justice, and dedicated to Emma, Bella and Bijela. She will be deeply missed by a wide circle of family, friends and colleagues.

Roxana was born in Hong Kong in 1951. She immigrated with her parents and two brothers to Canada in 1970. She received a BA from University of British Columbia, and a PhD from University of Toronto. Since 1988, she has been a professor at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (University of Toronto). Roxana’s extensive scholarship on race, gender and class; immigrant women and garment workers; and embodied learning and decolonizing pedagogy is a legacy to be cherished and celebrated.

On Tuesday May 28, 2013, a celebration of Roxana’s life and work will be held in the Library at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE), 252 Bloor St W from 5pm-8pm. For more information, visit http://www.oise.utoronto.ca/cwse/

The Faculty of Education at York University is home to a range of diverse, interdisciplinary perspectives of education ranging from humanities to ethnography, technology, and arts-based research, across both global and local domains. The Annual Graduate Conference in Education brings together students, faculty, teachers and practitioners to share conceptual and methodological perspectives, practices, experiences and ideas in a collegial learning environment.

Topics for presentations include, but are not limited to:
– Community-situated learning, social justice education, diversity & equity;
– Experiential education, participatory methods;
– Indigenous ways of knowing, (de)colonizing practices;
– Urban education, disability studies, early childhood education;
– Trends in K-12 and post-secondary education;
– Psychoanalysis, sexualities, feminist studies, queer theory, cultural studies;
– Arts-based education, literacy, and linguistics;
– Global and International education, sustainability, environmental studies;
– Mathematics, science, media and technology education;
– Alternative education.

In addition to paper presentations, we welcome proposals consisting of already formed panels. We encourage both debate-style panels that include representatives advocating several positions on a topic of disagreement, and emerging-area style panels that consolidate and explain recent work on a subject of interest to education. Submissions for non-textual artifacts or performance-based presentations (dance, videos, photographs, artwork, technological resources, etc.) are also welcome. Rethinking Labour was founded by professors Stephanie Ross and Larry Savage, who in 2012 published Rethinking the Politics of Labour in Canada (http://rethinkinglabour.ca/projects/rethinking-the-politics-of-labour-in-canada/).
The book asks how and why workers were able to exert collective power in the postwar era, how they lost it, and how they might re-establish it in the future.

BUS STEWARDS WIN MORE ROUTES THROUGH ALLIANCE WITH RIDERS

New York City transit workers ran a winning campaign when we turned to community organizing in our fight against cuts in service.

The cuts to bus service were severe: 38 routes eliminated and 76 with shorter routes or shorter hours. Transport Workers Union (TWU) Local 100 fought the Metropolitan Transportation Authority every step of the way, protesting at board meetings and in front of the director’s house. And we managed to get our laid-off workers back over the course of a year.

PROTECT THE GLOBAL DOMESTIC WORKER: REPORT

Canada yet to ratify UN safeguard for 53 million who toil in others’ homes.

Working in other people’s homes is no guarantee of safety and dignity, according to a new report that finds domestics all over the world are vulnerable to economic exploitation, overwork, rape and other forms of physical abuse.

In the wake of that new UN sponsored research, local advocates say that Canada should be doing more to protect those who tend our children, clean our houses, cook our meals and care for the ill and the dying.

Canada’s largest energy union says no to the Keystone XL pipeline

The speech below was delivered by the President of the CEP, Dave Coles, to the labor breakfast titled “Confronting the Climate Crisis: Can Labor Help Shape an Effective Strategy?” held at the City University of New York on 17 January 2013.

The obvious answer to the question is yes and the voice of energy workers is a particularly important one to hear while talking about labor’s role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.  As Canada’s largest energy union, the CEP represents 35,000 members employed in oil and gas extraction, transportation, refining, and conversion in the petrochemical and plastics sectors.

CEP believes that it is necessary to transition away from fossil fuels by reducing consumption and investing in green energies while ensuring a just transition for energy workers and their communities.

TEACHERS’ STRIKES AND THE FIGHT AGAINST AUSTERITY IN ONTARIO

On January 3, Ontario Education Minister Laurel Broten announced that she will be imposing concessionary contracts on the province’s teachers. This is a drastic attack on collective bargaining rights that the teachers have said they will fight. It follows on the heels of the Liberal minority government’s Bill 115, “An Act to Implement Restraint Measures in the Education System,” passed last September with the support of the Conservatives.

A province-wide illegal strike across Ontario’s public education system in response to the latest attack is a real possibility. To begin to turn back the austerity agenda and defend trade union rights, a determined fightback, including a province-wide walkout, is a necessity. A wider movement of support and solidarity also needs to be built. Unfortunately, there is not much hope that the provincial NDP will be an effective player in such a movement.

S.A.M.E. RELEASES 4-PART MINI-SERIES ON MIGRANT WORKER EXPERIENCES IN CANADA

A UFCW Canada Human Rights Department Release

As another year passes, The S.A.M.E. continues to break new ground in engaging youth and their communities about the plight of migrant workers in Canada. The newest effort by The Students Against Migrant Exploitation, or The S.A.M.E., is a four-part mini-series on the experiences of migrant agricultural workers in Canada.

The mini-series highlights the experiences of several workers who are among the tens of thousands of people who migrate temporarily to work in fields and greenhouses across Canada.

The four-part series is aimed at providing the broader public with an insider’s look at the Seasonal Agricultural Workers Program – a program that has been bringing tens of thousands of migrant workers to Canada every year since 1967.

The videos include first-hand accounts of migrant workers and their real-life experiences. The series is divided into the following episodes:

–  Why They Migrate (PART I)
– Their Living/Working Conditions (PART II)
– Injuries on the Job (PART III)
– What Migrant Agricultural Workers Themselves Would Like to Change (PART IV)
