Education Crisis

DEFEND PUBLIC EDUCATION: UCU CONFERENCE

The ‘Defend Public Education: from cradle to grave’ conference organised by UCU and supported by NUT, NASUWT and NUS is on Saturday 1st February.

This conference will bring together key speakers, practitioners and participants from across the education sector to discuss current policies, along with what members can do to defend the principle of education from cradle to grave in the age of austerity.

Our speakers include Bonnie Greer and Huw Lewis, Minister of Education and Skills in the Welsh Assembly government. The conference will also feature speakers from UCU, NUT, Compass, UnionLearn and the Action for ESOL Campaign. Further details of the agenda along with speakers and workshops is available here.

The conference is free and will be held at the Ambassadors Hotel, Upper Woburn Place, London, WC1H OHX between 10 and 4. Refreshments and a light lunch will be available, but we will be unable to reimburse travel and accommodation expenses for UCU members on this occasion.

We expect this conference to be extremely popular and would urge members to register early to avoid disappointment. The deadline for registration is the 24 January and you can book your place here.

The School of Education and Lifelong Learning kindly invites you to participate in the International Conference: A Child’s World – Next Steps, taking place on 25-27 June 2014 at the Penglais Campus of Aberystwyth University, Wales, UK.

‘A Child’s World – Next Steps’ Conference has been devised to build on the success of the 2012 conference ‘A Child’s World: Working Together for a Better Future’, focusing on new concepts in Raising Standards, Curriculum Development and Safeguarding Children, with the aim of enabling collaboration, creating effective policy and sharing best practice in childhood studies within an international strategic dimension.

Focused primarily at an educational research and professional audience, the findings will be relevant across a range of disciplines, including governmental policy formulation, social care, and operational delivery of public services. The wide ranging scope of the conference will be highly applicable for international, national, regional and local government, along with education professionals and will be of direct interest to the general public.

It is intended that selected papers will be published in an edited book, providing the opportunity to identify and share best practice amongst subject professionals.

The School of Education and Lifelong Learning welcomes and invites submission of abstracts for presentation and dissemination at the conference on the following themes:

Training and Professional Development for all stakeholders involved with children

Abstracts should outline the issue addressed, methods and approaches, results and conclusions. The School of Education and Lifelong Learning welcomes the submission of abstracts in English or Welsh.

The Wilson Review (2012) indicated that both the sector and employers needed to focus on fostering mutual relationships.  But what does this mean?

In response to the Wilson Review, and at the request of the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS), CIHE are creating a National Centre for Universities and Business (NUCB).  What research needs will this new body have?

Future events run by the network will focus on short internships and work experience (led by Southampton Solent University) and the effect of Placements on Employability and Academic Performance (led by Aston University), on Enterprise Education and work with SMEs.  We hope in doing this to link with other organisations such as the Higher Education Academy  (HEA), Association of Graduate Recruiters (AGR) and the Association of Sandwich Education and Training (ASET).

PUBLIC SERVICES REVIEW (EUROPE) – ISSUE 24

The latest issue of Public Service Review: Europe (Issue 24) is now online.

The impressive foreword is by President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz discussing European integration and later articles cover in-detail key public policy areas such as finance, defence, education, culture, regional policy, transport. The section Environment, Agriculture and Energy opens with Janez Potoènik’s assessment of positive outcomes from Rio+, followed by in-depth coverage of environment, agriculture, energy and maritime issues.

In addition, Health is represented by a number of searching articles on oncology, women and children’s health, ageing and elderly care, nursing and mental health. ONTARIO ACADEMIC LIBRARIANS CONCERNED ABOUT SEVERE BUDGET CUTS

Ontario’s university libraries appear to be bearing a sizeable share of the cuts as universities grapple with budget cutbacks. A new report, based on a questionnaire sent to Ontario’s academic librarians, describes widespread staffing reductions, neglect of library collections, and delays in technology investments.

“Ontario’s academic librarians are at the forefront of supporting students and faculty in their research and teaching, tending to extensive collections, and introducing new technology advances to keep up with the demands of the digital world,” said Constance Adamson, an academic librarian at Queen’s University and vice-president of Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations (OCUFA).

Lee Maracle is of Salish and Cree ancestry and a member of the Stó:lō Nation. Besides being a professor at the University of Toronto, she has also been the Stanley Knowles Visiting Professor in Canadian Studies at the University of Waterloo. Maracle has been the Traditional Cultural Director of The Centre for Indigenous Theatre and has worked as an instructor of dramatic composition and theatrical representation. Maracle’s works reflect her antipathy toward racism, sexism, and white cultural domination.

ONTARIO TEACHERS’ PENSION PLAN INVESTING IN PRIVATE, FOR-PROFIT WATER SERVICES IN CHILE

In Canada and around the world there is clear evidence that the privatization of water services has meant:

* Rate hikes and cut-offs to low income households
* Violation or elimination of environmental regulation
* Reduction in quality of services
* Lay-offs and poor labour standards

Public private partnerships (P3s) are often used to privatize water services. Water is a human right and a public resource. Privatization restricts access to water – a vital life resource – to those who can afford to pay for it.

This is why the Council of Canadians has launched a campaign calling on the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan (OTPP) to stop investing in private, for-profit water services in Chile.

Our major project is APCOL: Anti-Poverty Community Organizing and Learning. This five-year project (2009-2013), funded by SSHRC-CURA, brings academics and activists together in a collaborative effort to evaluate how organizations approach issues and campaigns and use popular education.
