ROUTLEDGE STUDIES IN RADICAL HISTORY AND POLITICS – BOOK PROPOSALS

Routledge is currently looking for book proposals to be included in a new book series, Routledge Studies in Radical History and Politics: http://www.routledge.com/books/series/RSRHP/

The series has two areas of interest. Firstly, it aims to publish books which focus on the history of movements of the radical left. ‘Movement of the radical left’ is here interpreted in its broadest sense as encompassing those past movements for radical change which operated in the mainstream political arena as with political parties, and past movements for change which operated more outside the mainstream as with millenarian movements, anarchist groups, utopian socialist communities, and trade unions.

Secondly, the series aims to publish books which focus on more contemporary expressions of radical left-wing politics. Recent years have been witness to the emergence of a multitude of new radical movements adept at getting their voices in the public sphere. From those participating in the Arab Spring, the Occupy movement, community unionism, social/new media forums, independent media outlets, local voluntary organisations campaign ing for progressive change, and so on, it seems to be the case that innovative networks of radicalism are being constructed in civil society that operate in different public forms.

The series very much welcomes titles with a British focus, but is not limited to any particular national context or region. The series will encourage scholars who contribute to draw on perspectives and insights from a variety of disciplines.

Left Forum has a new date: After almost a decade of spring conferences and growth, Left Forum is moving from spring to early summer, June 7th – 9th. The location remains the same, PaceUniversity, next to City Hall Park, New York City.

Why the date changed: Coming each year during Spring Break weekend, this year’s break fell on Easter. The challenges of organizing the conference on Easter Sunday plus the opportunity to accommodate the growth of this unique global convergence helped inspire the move.

Highlights of the move: The new date will enable panels and events to be organized through the spring semester cycle making it easier on panelists and attendees alike. This will make for a richer intellectual and activist conference experience.

What to expect: Please check back at leftforum.org, for updates on the conference theme, plenary speaker announcements, panel and workshop descriptions, panel proposals, early registration and more.

The Present Crisis

The present moment is arguably one of unprecedented confusion on the Left.  The emergence of many new theoretical perspectives on Marxism, anarchism, and the left generally seem rather than signs of a newfound vitality, the intellectual reflux of its final disintegration in history.  As for the politics that still bothers to describe itself as leftist today, it seems no great merit that it is largely disconnected from the academic left’s disputations over everything from imperialism to ecology. Perhaps nowhere are these symptoms more pronounced than around the subject of the economy.

As Marxist economics has witnessed of late a flurry of recent works, many quite involved in their depth and complexity, recent activism around austerity, joblessness, and non-transparency while quite creative in some respects seems hesitant to oppose with anything but nostalgia for the past the status quo mantra, “There is no Alternative.”  At a time when the United States has entered the most prolonged slump since the Great Depression, the European project founders on the shoals of debt and nationalism.  If the once triumphant neoliberal project of free markets for free people seems utterly exhausted, the “strange non-death of neo-liberalism,” as a recent book title has it, seems poised to carry on indefinitely.  The need for a Marxist politics adequate to the crisis is as great as such a politics is lacking.

And 2011 now seems to be fading into the past.  In Greece today as elsewhere in Europe existing Left parties remain largely passive in the face of the crisis, eschewing radical solutions (if they even imagine such solutions to exist).  In the United States, Occupy has vanished from the parks and streets, leaving only bitter grumbling where there once seemed to be creativity and open-ended potential. In Britain, the 2011 London Riots, rather than political protest, was trumpeted as the shafted generation’s response to the crisis, overshadowing the police brutality that actually occasioned it.  Finally, in the Arab world where, we are told the 2011 revolution is still afoot, it seems inconceivable that the revolution, even as it bears within it the hopes of millions, could alter the economic fate of any but a handful.

While joblessness haunts billions worldwide, politicization of the issue seems chiefly the prerogative of the right.  Meanwhile, the poor worldwide face relentless price rises in fuel and essential foodstuffs. The prospects for world revolution seem remote at best, even as bankers and fund managers seem to lament democracy’s failure in confronting the crisis. In this sense, it seems plausible to argue that there is no crisis at all, but simply the latest stage in an ongoing social regression. What does it mean to say that we face a crisis, after all, when there is no real prospect that anything particularly is likely to change, at least not for the better?

In this opaque historical moment, Platypus wants to raise some basic questions:

* Do we live in a crisis of capitalism today and, if so, of what sort — political? Economic? Social?

* Why do seemingly sophisticated leftist understandings of the world appear unable to assist in the task of changing it?

* Conversely, can the world be thought intelligible without our capacity to self-consciously transform it through practice?

* Can Marxism survive as an economics or social theory without politics?

* Is there capitalism after socialism?

We are not affiliated to any particular party, tendency or strand of thought. Rather, we seek to contribute towards a lively, inclusive culture of left-wing discussion, appealing both to those who already consider themselves to be of the left, and to any others who have an interest in its ideas and priorities.

Our site contains a mixture of short, timely content on our blog as well as more detailed, in-depth treatment of various subjects through our feature articles, interviews and NLP-hosted debates. Rationale for magazine: We are at a watershed moment in radical politics. Neo-liberalism is in crisis. But is radical politics today in a healthy enough state to seize the opportunity? More fundamentally, in the wake of the global meltdown in 2008, what actually is radical politics today? This interdisciplinary magazine publishes clearly written articles which explore the spirit of radical politics in our times. It examines the nature and character of what counts as ‘radical’ today. And so, Radical Politics Today encourages constructive critique of broader contemporary radical practices, not individual personal criticism. The magazine seeks to document, catalogue, and analyse this historical moment.

In the last year, as the global economic crisis has deepened, we have seen revolutions sweep dictators from power across the Middle East and North Africa and resistance to austerity spread across Europe and the US with the Occupy Movement. There have been a number of general strikes in Greece and mass strikes in Britain.

This year’s Oxford Radical Forum (ORF) will be held from 2-4th March. This will be the fifth anniversary of the forum, run by students, lecturers and local activists based in the city. This year it is bigger than ever, with almost thirty sessions over a host of colleges and venues during the weekend.

The forum opens with ‘the MENA Revolutions: One Year On’, with Nadine El-Enany (activist from Cairo), Gilbert Achcar (SOAS), Anne Alexander (Cambridge) and Firoze Manji (Pambazuka Press). This will be followed by a discussion between Terry Eagleton and Alex Callinicos on ‘Why Marx was Right’.

Over the weekend, we will bring together Occupy activists from New York via live link-up with activists from Occupy London, for reflections on how the movement has changed politics and on how it can develop. International perspectives will also be brought by sessions on political struggle from Latin America to the Eurozone to China. A meeting on sexual liberation will be joined by Ghassan Makaram, a Lebanese LGBTQ activist. On Saturday, Greg Philo will join Moshe Machover and Daphna Baram for a meeting on Palestine and the Media.

This year’s line-up also reflects rising levels of resistance to austerity in Britain. We will bring together trade unionists from public and private sectors, students and community activists. Our session on the future of education will discuss this government’s decision to withdraw its Higher Education Bill with John Holmwood (Campaign for the Public University) and others. Radical Political Rhetoric

‘Political activity’, claims Jacques Rancière, ‘makes understood as discourse what was once only heard as noise’. Central to radical politics, then, are inventive rhetorical practices: mobilising critique, disrupting dominant forms of discourse and generating new forms of argumentation to win new audiences. But what are the contemporary sources for a radical political rhetoric? Who performs radical critique and how?  In what respects does the current crisis demand inventive rhetoric and to whom should these arguments be directed? Should radical politics be conceived as an argumentative practice at all? Can occupations and demonstrations effectively persuade and mobilise opinion? When does protest stop being just ‘noise’?

We invite papers to explore the rhetorical styles and substance of radical politics. Proposed papers may cover (but are not limited to) the following topics:

·      The philosophical sources, grounds and premises of radical rhetoric; their limitations and advantages

·      The stylistic forms of argumentation and communication

·      The audiences of radical political argument

·      Practical examples of inventive forms of critique and persuasion

·      Reflection on the rhetorical contexts and modalities of political critique

·      The place of emotions and affect in political communication

·      Democracy and rhetorical subjectivity
