Marx’s Philosophic Critique of Capital: An Exploration of the Grundrisse

Join us for a re-examination of Marx’s analysis of the logic of capital in light of the ongoing global economic and social crisis. The focus of these discussions will be Marx’s ‘Grundrisse’, his draft of ‘Capital’, in which he developed some of his most creative philosophic conceptions. The readings from Marx will be supplemented by selections from Philosophy and Revolution, by Raya Dunayevskaya.

Schedule and Readings

February 9th – The Historical Specificity of Capitalism in the United States: Led by Peter Hudis
Why has U.S. society given rise to claims of American exceptionalism? 
What is distinctive about the development about U.S. capitalism, as compared with Europe?

In what way do such questions relate to the current efforts to reduce government spending and subject society to the whims of the free market?

We will explore Marx’s approach to such questions, as posed his critique of Carey in his Grundrisse.

February 23rd – The Dialectic of Political Economy: Led by J Turk
In what way did Hegel’s philosophy impact Marx’s analysis of capital, and to what extent does dialectical thought remain of importance in providing a comprehensive understanding of contemporary social developments?

We will explore Marx’s approach to these questions, as posed in his Introduction to the Grundrisse.

March 9th – Alternatives to Capitalism: Past, Present and Future: Led by Anton Evelynov
Does Marx discuss the alternative to capitalism, and if so, what did he say about it?

Why was Marx critical of efforts in his day to limit the critique of capitalism to calls to abolish the free market; and how does that illuminate the shortcomings of 20th and 21st century efforts to transcend capitalism?

We will explore Marx’s approach to this, as posed in the Grundrisse’s critique of efforts to organize exchange.

March 23rd – Marx’s Concept of the Universally Developed Individual: Led by Marilyn Nissim-Sabat
Why does Marx refer to capitalism as a system based on relation of personal independence that limits the scope of individual initiative and freedom?

Why does he pose the free association of individuals as an alternative to both pre-capitalist and capitalist modes of production?

How do these issues speak to today’s freedom struggles?

We will explore Marx’s discussion of these issues in the part of the Grundrisse devoted to the development of universal needs and capacities.

April 13th – Marx on Pre-Capitalist Economic Formations: Led by Eileen Grace
What was Marx’s understanding of forms of production, exchange, and communal association that precede capitalism?

Did he view pre-capitalist economic formations as containing, in embryo, indications of social and ecological relations that point beyond capitalism?

We will explore Marx’s discussion of these issues in the famous section of the Grundrisse entitled Pre-Capitalist Economic Formations.

April 27th – The Automaton, Labor Time, and the Quest for a New Society: Led by Peter Hudis
Why has automated and computerized forms of labor, which at one time were heralded as leading to a dramatic shortening of the working day, led instead to an increase in the amount of time that many spend at work?

To what extent does machinery and technology hinder or assist the effort to transcend the alienation that characterizes much of present-day society?

We will explore Marx’s discussion of these issues in the section of the Grundrisse on Machinery.

In the 20th century, both Marxists and their opponents took it for granted that Marx’s work contains an elaborate theory of history rooted in a decidedly optimistic mindset. This theory was usually considered to be essentially a sketch of an ideal future society – a theory of salvation merely dressed up as science. It is all the more surprising, therefore, that Marx’s thoughts on progress have so far not been the subject of a thorough investigation.

Denis Mäder’s study analyses the modern idea of progress and the way in which it is being discussed today. This analysis serves as the background to a reconstruction of the original concept of progress that emerges as a result of Marx’s critical confrontation with his own philosophical milieu (especially with Hegel, the Hegelians, and Proudhon).

Progress is the historical movement of goodness. Yet, for the dialectician Marx there can be no progress without opposition. He sees in progress the possibility of positive development without, however, obliterating alternative or contradictory forms of development.

Opportunity for PhD funding in anarchist history, politics or theory

The Department of Politics, History & International Relations at Loughborough University (UK) is inviting applications for studentships (£13,290 per annum stipend for three years, plus tuition fees) to undertake doctoral research from October 2011 in any area related to the Department’s research interests.

Applications should be received by Monday, 7 March 2011. Priority will normally be given to UK/EU applicants. Where appropriate, you will also normally be expected to apply for Research Council studentships.

Dr Dave Berry, Dr. Alexandre Christoyannopoulos and Dr Ruth Kinna would like to hear from anyone interested in studying for a PhD in any area related to anarchist history, politics or theory.

Dave Berry is a Senior Lecturer in Contemporary European History. He has published primarily on the French anarchist movement, the contemporary alternative left in France and on Daniel Guérin. He is the author of A History of the French Anarchist Movement, 1917-1945 (Greenwood Press, 2002; AK edition 2009) and co-editor of New Perspectives on Anarchism, Labour and Syndicalism (CSP, 2010); he is an associate editor and reviews editor of ‘Anarchist Studies’ and a founder member of the Anarchist Studies Network (Specialist Group for the Study of Anarchism within the Political Studies Association –

Alexandre Christoyannopoulos is a Lecturer in Politics and International Relations. He has published on Tolstoy, non-violence and Christian anarchism, and is the author of ‘Christian Anarchism: A Political Interpretation of the Bible’ (Imprint, 2010), and editor of ‘Religious Anarchism: New Perspectives’ (Cambridge Scholars, 2009). He is the treasurer of the Anarchist Studies Network, an executive member of the Religion and Politics research committee of the International Political Science Association, and a member of a number of related academic associations.

Ruth Kinna is a Senior Lecturer in Politics. She has published on William Morris and Peter Kropotkin, and is the author of ‘Anarchism: A Beginner’s Guide’ (Oneworld, 2005; 2nd edn. 2009) and co-editor, with Laurence Davis of ‘Anarchism and Utopianism’ (Manchester UP, 2009). She is the editor of the journal ‘Anarchist Studies’ and is also a founder member and co-convenor of the Anarchist Studies Network.

The Department is home to an Anarchism Research Group (, and there are currently five PhD students in the Department working on aspects of anarchism: Cris Illiopoulos, working on Nietzsche and anarchism; Saku Pinta, who is completing a dissertation on convergences and divergences between anarchism and Marxism; Sureyyya Turkeli working on the historiography of anarchism; Matt Wilson working on anarchist ethics; and Gwen Windpassinger, working on queer feminist anarchism in Buenos Aires. Dr. Alex Prichard’s research on the political thought of P-J Proudhon was also completed at the Department and his thesis successfully defended in 2008.
