What do we mean by ‘epistemic access’? How important is access to ‘powerful knowledge’ in the context of policies to widen participation, enhance graduate employment and increase social mobility?

This seminar will explore these issues.

SPEAKERS:

Professor Sue Clegg, Leeds Metropolitan University: ‘Employability, social mobility, and epistemic access’

In a context in which the linkage between graduate employment and social mobility has been challenged and employability curricula are deemed necessary to enhance students’ skills,  Prof. Clegg will explore the relationship between national and institutional policies, curriculum, and powerful knowledge in considering the implications for social and epistemic access.

Professor Michael Young, Institute of Education:  ‘From access to epistemic access and why it matters’

Noting the pressures in South Africa to ‘open access’ to the historically excluded majority, Prof. Young considers what might be meant by access, and considers ‘access to what?’. He argues for the need to extend the distinction between ‘formal’ and ‘epistemic’ access to also include ‘epistemological’ access to reflect on wider debates about knowledge and the curriculum.

Tea and coffee will be available at 4.00pm and the event will start at 4.15. After each paper there will be time for questions and discussion, followed by an opportunity to discuss issues raised in both papers over a glass of wine or juice.

Discourse, Power, Resistance: DPR 13      

DISCOURSES OF INCLUSION AND EXCLUSION
9 – 11 April, 2013 – University of Greenwich, United Kingdom

Power can be a wonderful thing, as Terry Eagleton told the DPR conference in 2008: wonderful and essential for the achievement of our best and most generous purposes. But it can also be abused.

A widespread abuse of power is to organise the social world into groups that are included and others that are excluded, using the discourse of the powerful group, like subtly barbed wire, to distinguish the insiders from the outsiders on the grounds of gender, ethnicity, age, wealth, sexuality, class and other grouping. Communities may then disintegrate. The excluded members may seek to be admitted to the privileged group by learning and adopting its discourse; or they may resist this assimilation and celebrate their difference in defiant counter-cultures of their own.

What is the scope of research, learning and teaching in this contested space? What knowledges and methodologies should be included or excluded, and why? These are the issues the conference will consider.

Exchanging words and papers is a powerful academic practice at the heart of DPR. But the conference is about the discourses of inclusion and exclusion, so images, music, performance, display, story-telling – the variously imaginative ways of sharing our understanding – must have their space. DPR13 will include the contributions of the creative and performing arts so that the conference tells and shows a freshly inclusive vision.

Preparations and plans for DPR13 are already well under way with over 60 abstracts accepted and more coming in daily. The Second Call for Papers is Friday 21 December. This is not a deadline but we strongly encourage delegates planning to offer papers, workshops, posters or exhibition work to send abstracts as soon as possible. Details of 12 projects and seminars already in preparation are posted on the website.

CALL FOR PAPERS
A Special Issue on MIGRATION AND EDUCATION

The journal Power and Education (www.wwwords.co.uk/POWER) is publishing a special issue on Migration and Education. Papers should address the role education can and should play in the context of migration and/or what migration reveals and conceals about power and education. Migration should be considered as means of empowerment as well as disempowerment. Papers are welcome from all educational disciplines.

The International Organization for Migration estimates that nearly 200 million people across the world are currently living outside their place of birth and that about 3% of the global population are therefore migrants. The mass movement of people in the 21st Century has significant implications for education – from the need to meet legal obligations to educate the children of migrants to the internationalisation of the academic marketplace. Moreover, the legacies of historic migrations continue to impact on education – from the subjugation (and the occasional post-colonial resurrection) of indigenous practices and knowledges to the ethnic lines that still fracture the socio-economic structures of education. If migration presents ‘problems’ then education has a part to play in their resolution – education is widely recognised as a key element of social integration and whilst intolerance can be learned tolerance and mutual respect can be taught.

Power runs through all these issues. It can also be discerned in the on-going debate between multiculturalism and assimilation and the question of whether migrants should be taught the culture of their host countries. Other questions saturated with power include: What histories of migration should be taught? How is the commercialisation of education in an increasingly globalised world driving migration? What is the proper and just approach to the distribution of (typically limited) educational resources to migrants? To what extent can migration be harnessed to empower intercultural education and education for global citizenship?

This special issue of Power and Education will address the complexities of migration from a range of educational disciplines and theoretical frameworks. Contributions are invited that engage with all aspects of migration, including voluntary and forced migration and intra-country migration (e.g. from rural to urban areas) as they impact on children and/or adults and on students and/or teachers. Historical perspectives on the educational legacies of previous migrations are welcome as are considerations of the transition from immigration to integration. Education should be considered in its broadest terms to include all stages of formal education, lifelong learning and informal education. Contributions should specifically address issues of power and/in education and the journal will consider papers engaging with all power paradigms.

Suggested topics include, but are not limited to:
• the Bologna Process
• the ‘brain drain’ and its consequences
• children and language learning
• cultural capital and countries of origin
• displaced children and the inclusion agenda
• global citizenship
• immigration and integration
• refugee academics
• social constructions and interpretations of migration
• teaching and learning diversity in schools

The DPR conference returns to Plymouth in its tenth year, bringing together learners, teachers, researchers and policy-makers from the international education community to look at the crises in contemporary education, not just at post-compulsory level but across the board from pre-school to post-graduate. The need for change in education has never been more urgent. The conference will bring colleagues from around the world to think radically about education changing, and needing to change.

The conference will be divided into 7 streams:

– Anticipative education: policy and practice
– Education in a funding crisis
– Widening participation: for real
– Education across the boundaries of faith: challenging fear and hatred
– The future of post-compulsory education: the internet and 
   the role of the university
– DPR: open

The DPR conference is a site for the radical critique of discourse, power and resistance within and beyond the discipline of education, looking at concerns which are currently troubling learners, teachers and researchers engaged at all stages from pre-school to postgraduate. The conference looks more widely at the impact on education of powerful interests in and behind the policy-making apparatus as they exert their influence to reshape the goals and ethos of learning, teaching and research. DPR transgresses inter-disciplinary boundaries, attracting scholars from across the humanities and social sciences. A continuing concern of the conference is the contested issue of research methodology and the related issues of the problem of knowledge.

The conference has an international reputation, drawing delegates from a wide range of the developed and developing nations and attracting world-class keynote speakers.
