MARXISM AND EDUCATION: RENEWING DIALOGUES XXII – AND A PROFESSORSHIP IN EDUCATION

The 22nd MARXISM AND EDUCATION: RENEWING DIALOGUES (MERD) SEMINAR presents:

David J. Blacker, Professor of Philosophy, University of Delaware

The Race to Nowhere: Abandoning the Promise of Universal Education

Universal education is beloved as an ideal while its reality is being extinguished. Heralded as expansions of access where we “race to the top” and “leave no child behind,” initiatives involving marketization, austerity, privatization and student debt combine to eliminate and expel growing segments of the rising generation.

Why is this happening?  And why now?  David J. Blacker outlines a coherent framework for understanding the current onslaught against all levels of public education. It all comes down to deep and troubling changes in the economy that “education reform” cannot touch and that nobody wants to talk about.

CLASS STRUGGLE AND EDUCATION

Class Struggle and Education: Neoliberalism, (Neo)-conservatism, and the Capitalist Assault on Public Education

DAVE HILL in Critical Education (Vol. 4 No.3, 2013)

In this article I examine the nexus, the mutually reinforcing connection between neoliberal and neoconservative ideology and social and political forces, and variation between countries such as Britain, the USA and Turkey. This analysis is then applied in particular to neoliberal/ neoconservative education `reform’ in England, focusing on marketisation, high-stakes testing, privatization and pre-privatisation, and the increased surveillance of teachers as a result of new public managerialism in education, as reinforced and enforced by the school inspection system. These effects are then related to the lived work experiences of specific teachers, using their own word. I conclude the article by examining and calling for resistance, for teachers and critical education workers to educate, agitate and organize in various arenas, and to consider the importance of political programme- in particular to consider the utility of the transitional programme as advanced by Trotsky – Dave Hill

HEATHWOOD PRESS REPUBLISHES ‘EDUCATION AS CULTURE MACHINE’

The Heathwood Institute republished my paper Education As Culture Machine through their Heathwood Press website on 8th July 2013.

This paper was written primarily for my EDU3004 ‘Education, Culture & Society’ students, for an Education Studies module in the School of Education and the University of Northampton. However, it may be of more general interest. It was originally posted to ‘The Flow of Ideas’ website on 25th September 2008, and was the very last article posted to my old ‘Volumizer’ blog before AOL shut down all of its blogs.

See:

Rikowski, G. (2008) Education As Culture Machine, 25th September, London, online at: http://www.flowideas.co.uk/?page=articles&sub=Education%20As%20Culture%20Machine

The Heathwood Press version is easier to read and has pictures.
