MARX READING GROUP – LONDON

We are writing to inform you about a meeting to plan a London-based Marxist reading group. Our initial idea is to attempt to grapple with a number of classic texts in the Marxist tradition that are frequently cited but rarely read, and yet might help to develop our analytical method, spark useful theoretical discussion and raise the confidence of people engaged in critical and radical practice.

We are interested in doing some study on Marx’s philosophical and historical views and on his political and economic writings (as well as those of other Marxists such as Engels, Gramsci and others). However, the design and content of the group (or groups) is still completely open and shall be decided at the initial organizing meeting.

The initiative is independent of any organizations and is open to all those interested in engaging with Marxist theory in the hope that it will provide some answers to the questions confronting radicals today.

DETAILS:  Saturday 27th September, 4pm at B101, Brunei Gallery, SOAS University.

In solidarity: Sai E, Kevin O, Jonas L, Luke S

NEW YORK CITY ‘CAPITAL’ VOLUME II READING GROUP

A study group on vol. 2 of Capital will be meeting in Manhattan every other Thursday evening 7-10 PM, starting June 28.

Knowledge of vol. l is of course highly recommended, but “beginners” willing to do some background reading are welcome.

The group is highly participatory, with all members expected to do 15-20 minute presentations on sections of the reading. We will cover about 80-100 pages every two weeks.

Meetings will take place at the CUNY Graduate Center, Room 5409.

The group will in all likelihood continue on to vol. 3 in the fall.

If you are interested, contact me at lrgoldner@yahoo.com

The Marx Reading Group organised by students from the University of Nottingham continues into its fifth year with a focus on key theoreticians of contemporary Western Marxism. In response to an increasing demand for an alternative politics and the corresponding resurgent interest in theory, we turn to key texts by Lukács, the Frankfurt School, Sartre, Althusser, Poulantzas, Negri, Badiou and Žižek.

The reading group sessions will take place fortnightly on Thursdays from 6-8 p.m. in Trent B4 in the University of Nottingham starting 14th October 2010. You can download the poster here and the reading list is available here.

At the moment the group is comprised of both university students and members of the general public, and we welcome anyone with an interest in politics, philosophy, history, critical theory and culture. The texts for each session will be available in advance from the postgraduate research office in Trent B4b. For more information, please write to Adity Singh at ajxas3@nottingham.ac.uk.

We will also continue for the third year with the parallel series of Film Screenings that will take place on alternate Thursdays from 6-9pm in LG140 Hallward Library Screening Room, University of Nottingham starting 21st October 2010.
