Self Divided

SELF, PSYCHOANALYIS AND SOCIETY IN THE 21ST CENTURY

The relationship of self and society has intrigued philosophers, psychoanalysts, and sociologists for over a century. In the early part of the last century, as economic conditions fostered alienation, malaise and despair, the neo-Marxist Frankfurt School, among the first scholars influence by both the Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts, as well as Freudian psychology, began to investigate and theorize the social psychological factors that disposed certain people to Fascism. At about the same time, in the US, scholars such as Cooley, James and above all GH Mead began to think about socialization and the formation of self. These early perspectives played a major role in the rise of symbolic interactionism.

These theories have seen a number of developments and transformations. While the work of Reich, Fromm, Adorno and Horkhiemer was groundbreaking, Marcuse, Habermas and Jessica Benjamin have added to that tradition. Surely the work of Althusser, Lacan and Foucault has added a number of other concerns and dimensions.

For the past few years, a number of scholars have gathered together before the American Sociological Association meetings to discuss the vagaries of contemporary selfhood, largely, but not exclusively from a psychoanalytical perspective. This year, given the many European and International scholars that will be attending the ISA, we decided to move our venue to Gothenburg, Sweden, and schedule our meeting the day before ISA meets. The meeting will be sponsored by RC36 Alienation Theory and Research.

CAPITALISM AND THE DIALECTIC: THE UNO-SEKINE APPROACH TO MARXIAN ECONOMY

Capitalism & the Dialectic introduces the approach pioneered by Japanese economist, Kozo Uno and refined perhaps most dramatically by Thomas Sekine. This approach progressively increases its comprehension of capitalism by moving sequentially through three distinct levels of analysis. In the theory of pure capitalism, Uno and Sekine reproduce the logic that capital and its society-wide market employ in the attempt to reproduce material economic life. By adhering to Marx’s Hegelian dialectical method more consistently than did Marx, they are able to correct and complete Capital and to provide a convincing defence of value theory. The stages theory of capitalism’s historical development recognizes that in any historical society capital must also contend with more intractable use-values than the light cotton-type goods that are contemplated by pure theory (and that did indeed dominate British liberal capitalism). In theorizing each of the stages capitalism (mercantilism, liberalism, imperialism), the Uno-Sekine perspective recognizes that stage-specific economic policies must be advanced to tame use-value to the point that the market can operate effectively to reproduce economic life. Subsequent empirical studies are informed by these two levels of theory. The Uno-Sekine approach does not overlook the possibility that a society might still strive to be capitalist after use-value resistance has become so great that no bourgeois policy can provide the market with sufficient support to allow it to successfully regulate economic life.

THE FUTURE OF EDUCATIONAL MATERIALISM

Call for papers – Educational Philosophy and Theory

Special edition on: The future of educational materialism

Edited by David R Cole, University of Technology, Sydney

This edition of the journal will attend to emerging developments in educational materialism by bringing together international scholars in this area. The basic questions that this edition of the journal will address are: How do educational materialisms work? and: What are the relevant theoretical variations on educational materialism and what are their practical applications?

As a starting point for this discussion one might take this quote from Ray Brassier: “While transcendental orthodoxy wastes time staving off the imminent liquidation of reason, sense, and life, transcendental materialism celebrates the deterritorialization of intelligence.”

There are a least three inter-related strands of educational materialism that this special edition will interrogate:

* Materialist dialectics: Deriving in main from the work of Karl Marx – the basic thesis behind this strand of educational materialism is that teaching and learning systems are directed towards the manipulation of capital. Schools deliver human capital to the markets – that assess and place qualifications, social status and individual capabilities in terms of capital. This situation has been further accelerated and complexified due to the global use of electronic markets and the emergence of virtual capital. This strand of educational materialism may include work on social capital that is often theorised using the ideas of Pierre Bourdieu.

* Transcendental materialism. The second theoretical platform for understanding educational materialism is derived from the work of Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari. This strand accepts material dialectics, yet intensifies and broadens the scope in the ways capital transforms situations. This is because capitalism also acts on an irrational level, and this can be clearly seen if one analyses advertising or takes into account the ways in which media systems manipulate emotions. Transcendental materialism looks for escape routes out of situations that might lead to internalisation – and in the case of education, this includes putting contemporary practises such as examinations under erasure.

* Speculative materialism. This recent development in materialist theory reconciles materialism with realism – and avoids the potential for duality between materialism and idealism. The essential thesis of this strand of educational materialism stipulates that the designation of ‘the human’ or ‘the subject’ defines limiting criteria that restrict research. The path to forthright understanding of education therefore requires the elimination of phenomenology or any ‘mentalism’ that might contain and lock up the possibilities of material agency.
