3) Workshop on State Capitalism in East Asia.

A number of ISJ contributors have been involved in organising a workshop on State Capitalism in East Asia at the School of Oriantal and African Studies (SOAS). The workshop seeks to investigate the role of state capitalism in East Asian economic development, looking at commonalities across the conventional boundaries of ‘capitalist’ and ‘communist’ countries. It brings together scholars from South Korea and the UK who are working on this topic for the first time. The event will be held on 6 November in the Brunei Gallery at the Russell Squarecampus of SOAS. For more details, go to goo.gl/dyuiQ

4) Historical Materialism London Conference 2012

The eighth annual London conference hosted by the Historical Materialism journal will take place at SOAS on the weekend of 8-11 November. With the theme “Weighs Like A Nightmare”, this year’s conference “focuses on the returns and the persistence of political forms and theoretical problems, on the uses and abuses of the history of Marxism…and on the ways and forms in which an inheritance of various Marxist traditions can help us to organise and to act in this turbulent present”. WORLD CRISIS AND RESISTANCE

The world is now in the midst of the biggest economic crisis since the 1930s. This is a crisis brought on by the capitalist system. The response of our rulers, everywhere, is to make ordinary people pay the price—even though they didn’t cause it. Their policies are a declaration of class war.

Unevenly, but with growing strength, workers and students are developing a fightback in country after country. In Britain, the head of the Metropolitan Police says we are entering an era of mass protests.

In the past fortnight, mass protests have brought down a hated regime in Tunisia, and are now challenging Mubarak’s dictatorship in Egypt.

International Socialism journal invites you to join in a day school on the crisis, organizing in the resistance, and the possibilities for revolutionary politics.

Sessions on:

[2] How should revolutionaries organise in the 21st century?;
[3] What do we really mean by socialist revolution?

This issue leads with an article on “Marxism and feminism today”. Neoliberal capitalism promised women genuine equality and personal fulfilment. But the realities of women’s oppression persist, reinforced by a debased culture of lap-dancing and cosmetic surgery that has taken the transformation of women into objects to new extremes. This has provoked a new wave of feminism in reaction.

Judith Orr gives the new feminism a critical welcome, arguing for a materialist analysis of the relationship between women’s oppression and class exploitation. Genuine liberation, she concludes, is inseparable from the struggle against capitalism.

The issue also includes interviews with Shlomo Sand (author of The Invention of the Jewish People) and Richard Wilkinson (co-author of The Spirit Level). John Newsinger looks at the great wave of sit-down strikes in the mid-1930s that broke bosses’ resistance to the unionisation of basic industry in the United States. Gonzalo Pozo looks at the theory of the permanent arms economy developed by Tony Cliff, Mike Kidron, and Chris Harman. The late French Marxist philosopher Daniel Bensaïd is remembered in an article by Sebastian Budgen. Plus analysis, feedback, reviews and pick of the quarter

3) Chris Harman – 1942-2009

The Reading Group was deeply saddened to learn of the death of Chris Harman. Only two weeks ago, Chris gave a brilliantly accessible introduction to the first chapter of Capital for the Reading Group. That he was able to make the most abstract and difficult part of Capital so unfailingly concrete is a testament to the power and clarity of his thought. He will be greatly missed.
