THE EXTREME CENTRE: HOW THE NEOLIBERAL PROJECT HAS RESHAPED THE WORLD

Tuesday, 16 February 2016, 5-7PM

Tariq Ali (writer, filmmaker and editor of New Left Review)

The Extreme Centre: How the Neoliberal Project Has Reshaped the World

BGLT (SOAS, Brunei Gallery), Bloomsbury, London

Discussant: Dr Feyzi Ismail (SOAS)

Abstract: Since 1989, politics has become a contest to see which politicians can best serve the needs of the market. The result is always the same: a victory for the Extreme Centre. The same catastrophe has taken place in the US, Britain, Continental Europe and Australia. In this urgent and wide-ranging case for the prosecution, Tariq Ali looks at the people and the events that have informed this moment of political suicide: corruption in Westminster; the failures of the EU and NATO; the soft power of the American Empire that dominates the world stage uncontested. Despite this inertia, Ali goes in search of alternative futures, finding promise in the Bolivarian revolutions of Latin America and the edges of Europe. Emerging parties in Scotland, Greece and Spain, formed out of the 2008 crisis, as well as Corbynism in Britain, are offering new hope for democracy.

Tariq Ali has been a leading figure on the international left since the 60s, having engaged in debates against the Vietnam War with leading politicians of the time. He has written extensively on world history and politics; his works include The Obama Syndrome, The Clash of Fundamentalisms and his most recent publication, The Extreme Centre: A Warning. Described by the Observer as an ‘intellectual bomb thrower’ his contributions extend to film and theatre scripts, novels and published conversations, such as with Edward Said. He is a regular broadcaster on BBC Radio and contributes to magazines and newspapers including The Guardian and the London Review of Books.

All welcome, no need to book. Seating is available on a first come, first served, basis so please arrive early to be sure of a seat.

On behalf of the seminar organising committee: Alfredo Saad-Filho, Feyzi Ismail, Jo Tomkinson, Carolina Alves, Lorenza Monaco and Jai Bhatia

Further details of all the seminars are available on the SOAS Development Studies Department website: https://www.soas.ac.uk/development/events/devstudseminars/

Half-Day Workshop at THE University of East London

7 March 2015. Venue: UEL / Stratford Campus

Convenors: Centre for the Study of States, Markets & People (School of Business & Law, University of East London); Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence (King’s College London); and the School of Politics & International Relations (SPIRE, Keele University)

The Labour Party, Europe and Civic Engagement: People’s Empowerment or Misplaced Idealism?

Jeremy Corbyn’s ideas of “Peoples Quantitative Easing” (PQE), progressive taxation, a new welfare state in the UK and changing the European Union from a neo-liberal monetarist construction to a civilised, multi-cultural and pro-labour space for good governance are gaining traction amongst informed practitioners of finance, politicians, academics and beyond. But can wider communities and constituencies be engaged, and how? The theme of “civic engagement” would appear to empower people, engaging civil society and local communities with pro-growth and pro-welfare initiatives across Britain and Europe. The workshop aims at exploring the new ideas of the Labour Party examining their appeal and whether or not they further civic engagement empowering the citizen, or whether it is just another form of misplaced idealism with no possibilities to deliver.

Themes to explore include:

What is the relationship between Labour Party and the EU in both historical and contemporary perspectives? What’s the Labour Party stance on the EU today? What are the key ideas and policies of the Labour Party under Jeremy Corbyn and how do they engage with civil society and the key constituencies of the youth and middle classes? Are Labour Party’s new policies an alternative to austerity and how do they impact on current taxation regimes and inflation? Do Labour Party’s new policies augment the distance between Britain the EU? How do local communities can benefit from the Labour Party and vice versa? What would be the likely impact of Labour Party’s policies on education and the University sector from their possible im plementation in the future? Can PQE (People’s Quantitative Easing) lead to a re-industrialisation of Britain and how does it fit with the overall economic policy of the “New Labour” (abolition of tuition fees, re-nationalisation of railways, new taxation regime etc.)?

The original Left Book Club was founded in 1936 as a means of promoting radical debate in Britain. It swiftly became a phenomenon, distributing over 2 million books and forming 1,200 reading and discussion groups across the country. It engaged in political activity, including solidarity work (e.g. with Spain), political agitation and much else. The LBC is considered a factor in the creation of the Welfare State and in Labour’s landslide election victory of 1945. It closed in 1948.

Today we face a similar crisis to that of the 1930s, with capitalism breeding inequality, suffering and violence around the world. As then, however, the global left remains mobilised and committed to the creation of a fairer society, free of the repression and austerity that has defined the modern era.

The re-launch of the Left Book Club will help us rise to the challenge posed by the global crisis. The LBC will publish four books a year covering a range of progressive traditions, perspectives and ideas focused on the UK, Europe and the rest of the world.

Our aim is for these books to form the basis of a wide network of reading circles, discussion groups and other educational and cultural activities relevant to constructing the conditions for progressive social change in the interests of working people.

Jeremy Corbyn:

The relaunch of the Left Book Club is a terrific and timely idea, and will give intellectual ballast to the wave of political change sweeping Britain and beyond, encouraging informed and compassionate debate.

The work will open minds and inspire. I have a large collection of Left Book Club publications collected by my parents and me.

I support the LBC wholeheartedly.

Crisis in Ukraine

Crisis in Ukraine

STOP THE WAR PUBLIC MEETING ON UKRAINE

Ukraine:  What is Behind the Crisis?

6.30pm, Tuesday 15 April

The Wesley Hotel, Euston Street, London, NW1 2EZ
The crisis in the Ukraine continues, with tensions between the big powers growing day by day. There are several factors militating against war in the immediate future, including Russia’s nuclear arsenal and trade links with EU countries. But as the establishment think-tank Stratfor has argued, it would be naive to rule out a conflagration.

Already NATO air drills are taking place over the Baltics, and the UK and US are sending extra jets to patrol the skies. Poland has requested 10,000 NATO troops to be stationed on its territory and MPs in Kiev have voted to hold joint military exercises with NATO. In the medium to long term, NATO is looking at establishing permanent military bases in Ukraine.

1) TONY BLAIR: THE NIGHTMARE WE DID SEE COMING

Tony Blair says in his memoirs that Iraq was the nightmare he did not see coming. The majority of people in Britain had no difficulty in seeing that the nightmare we faced was not Iraq, but Tony Blair and his war policies.

Blair’s legacy will be that of a war criminal who waged an illegal war which killed hundreds of thousands and left Iraq in pieces, and who when he left office exploited his crimes to accumulate wealth soon expected to top £60 million.

We will not forget Blair’s crimes or the victims, whether Iraqi civilians or British soldiers, and we will continue to campaign for his indictment for the violation of countless international laws.

Which is why on Wednesday 8 September Stop the War will hold a protest outside Waterstone’s bookshop in London’s Piccadilly, when Blair will be doing a book-signing.

Tony Blair is not like any other author promoting a new book, but a war criminal who should be behind bars awaiting trial.

* EMAIL WATERSTONE’S NOW USING OUR E-LOBBY TOOL
It takes a couple of minutes using our model letter to send an instant message to Waterstone’s urging them to cancel Tony Blair’s book-signing.

* JOIN THE PROTEST AT WATERSTONE’S ON 8 SEPTEMBER
If Blair’s book-signing is not being cancelled,  Stop the War will organise a protest at 12.30pm outside Waterstone’s in Piccadilly, London. Please join us, if you can.

2) MORE SIGNS OF “PROGRESS” IN AFGHANISTAN

Parliament will debate the war in Afghanistan next week against the background of claims by the politicians and military waging war that the invading armies are “making progress”.

Twenty-one US soldiers were killed over last weekend — adding to the number killed this year, which is fast approaching the total for the whole of 2009. This exposes the reality in Afghanistan, as do the continually rising numbers of Afghan civilians being killed at a higher rate than in any previous year of the war.

Stop the War has organised a public meeting in the House of Commons the day before MPs debate the Afghan war. The title will be Afghanistan: Time To Go, and the speakers will include MPs Caroline Lucas, Jeremy Corbyn and Paul Flynn, who will be joined by Joan Humphries, from Military Families Against the War, whose grandson was killed in Afghanistan.

The meeting is part of the campaign mobilising support for the Afghanistan: Time To Go national demonstration in London on 20 November.

3) LETTER TO MPs FROM MILITARY FAMILIES

A group of military families have come together to produce a letter to MPs in the run up to next week’s debate and vote on Afghanistan in Parliament.

The letter calls for the troops to come home, and ends by saying:

“Politicians who send and keep the British Military in Afghanistan should take heed of the majority of the population
who want the troops home, remembering that they are elected as our servants not our masters. This pointless waste of life must end now before too many more suffer.” (SEE LETTER HERE: http://tinyurl.com/35zhv39)

The families are asking others who have military connections to add their names to the letter. If you are in contact with military families who have relatives serving in Afghanistan, or about to be deployed there, please bring this letter to their attention.

Any members of military families who would like further information, can contact Joan Humphries, whose grandson was killed in Afghanistan: Tel 07859 168 440, Email joanhumphreys2001@yahoo.co.uk

*************************************
4) OBAMA’S FAKE END TO THE IRAQ WAR

Barack Obama’s speech this week announcing that the Iraq War is over is, as Robert Fisk says, just “tomfoolery”: SEE
http://bit.ly/cQPjXT

The Americans are not leaving, the occupation is not over and the fighting continues. And as Hadani Ditmars reports in her article, Iraq in Pieces, the legacy of the illegal war is a nightmare for the Iraqi people, SEE  http://bit.ly/aBJVe2

*************************************
5) ARTIST SIGNED PRINT OF ICONIC BLAIR PICTURE

Artists Peter Kennard and Cat Phillips have made available to Stop the War 100 signed copies of their iconic picture of Tony Blair photographing himself with his mobile phone against a backdrop of Iraq in flames. SEE PRINT HERE: http://bit.ly/dBYeit

These limited edition 51cm x 51cm prints are available to Stop the War supporters, on a strict first come first served basis, at a cost of £10 plus £2.50 postage, from the national office: Tel: 020 7801 2768

Demand is likely to be very high for signed prints of this now legendary image, so if you would like one, it is advisable to apply immediately.

*************************************
6) NEW NATIONAL MEMBERS HELP RAISE URGENT FUNDS

We have had a tremendous response to our appeal in our last newsletter for supporters of Stop the War to become national members, as one of the best ways to help fund our activities.

We are still in urgent need of raising funds for the events we have planned for the coming months, not least the national demonstration on 20 November.

If you have not yet contributed and would like to support our fund raising drive, by becoming a national member or by making a donation, you can do so in three ways:
