World Crisis

WORLD CRISIS AND RESISTANCE

International Socialism Northern Day School

The world is now in the midst of the biggest economic crisis since the 1930s. This is a crisis brought on by the capitalist system. The response of our rulers, everywhere, is to make ordinary people pay the price—even though they didn’t cause it. Their policies are a declaration of class war.

Unevenly, but with growing strength, workers and students are developing a fightback in country after country. In Britain, the head of the Metropolitan Police says we are entering an era of mass protests.

In the past fortnight, mass protests have brought down a hated regime in Tunisia, and are now challenging Mubarak’s dictatorship in Egypt.

International Socialism journal invites you to join in a day school on the crisis, organizing in the resistance, and the possibilities for revolutionary politics.

Sessions on:

[1] Understanding the capitalist crisis;
[2] How should revolutionaries organise in the 21st century?;
[3] What do we really mean by socialist revolution?

Marxism and the Alternatives to Crisis

It has been three years since the economic crisis first manifested. The credit crunch has given way to financial crash and the Great Recession. The ruling classes of Europe, faced with a growing crisis in the Eurozone, have embraced austerity and cuts in order to shift the cost of the crisis to workers, students and the unemployed.

In response, we have seen movements of resistance right across Europe. In countries like Greece, France and Ireland, strikes and protests have been complemented by alternative programmes and debates about the way forward for the movement. In Britain, the student revolt has marked a turning point in the struggle. This seminar will bring together academics and activists to discuss the current situation and what lies ahead.

The annual Historical Materialism conference is organised by the editorial board of Historical Materialism in association with the Deutscher Memorial Prize committee and the Socialist Register. The conference has become an important event on the Left, providing an annual forum to discuss recent developments on the agenda of historical-materialist research and has attracted an increasingly high attendance over the past four years. The Editorial Board of Historical Materialism welcomes attendance and active engagement in discussion with panellists from new as well as prior participants with an interest in critical-Marxist thought.

One of the principal objectives of the conference has been to build bridges among the various Marxist communities, including the breaking down some of the linguistic and intellectual barriers which continue to hamper the circulation and expansion of critical-Marxist thought. The sixth annual Historical Materialism Conference, under the banner of ‘Crisis, Struggle and Political Alternatives’, promises to continue and take forward this objective.

The conference is organised around three plenary sessions (the Deutscher lecture, the launch of the Socialist Register 2010, and Historical Materialism’s plenary) and a host of workshops dedicated to specific themes.

Call for critical papers on business and management

The International Journal of Management Concepts and Philosophy is a peer reviewed journal looking at business and related issues that over the last couple of years under my de facto editorship has tried to provide a home for more radical pieces from academics working in an otherwise hostile environment in business and related areas. We are increasing our number of issues and welcome more papers from critical scholars which engage with some of the establishment pieties that appear in business and management. We are open to both theoretical pieces and the use of empirical case studies to deconstruct and attack bigger concepts. Past contributors have included Jane Hardy looking at how the rhetoric of knowledge transfer can be a mask for exploitation of companies that are taken over; Ben Selwyn critiquing supply chain literature for ignoring social relations and showing how bottlenecks in the supply chain can aid effective workers action; Chris Yuill detailing some of the debate about health and work and alienation; Gareth Dale and others taking apart the talk of green shift in business; Rachel Aldred attacking the misuse of qualitative research methods to support state policy and so on.

We have also rescued some papers that have been circulating in samizidat including Hugo Radice’s paper on how the higher education system in the UK has come to mirror elements of the old USSR. We have recently published an excellent piece by Colin Barker on Industrialism, capitalism, force and states: some theoretical and historical issues’, carved out of one his many unpublished papers and available from me on request.
