TWO TALKS ON FRANTZ FANON – BY PETER HUDIS

Tuesday 16th February 2016

Frantz Fanon on Race, Recognition, and Revolution: A Re-examination

Cambridge

Cambridge University

Mill Lane Lecture Room, 17:00-18:45:

Organised by the Cambridge Defend Education (CDE) and Cambridgeshire Left

See: http://www.internationalmarxisthumanist.org/events/cambridge-uk-frantz-fanon-race-recognition-revolution-re-examination

Frantz Fanon (1926-61) is widely considered one of the most important anti-colonial theorists of the twentieth century. Today we are witnessing a resurgence of interest in his contributions to philosophy, psychology and revolutionary theory in light of such realities as persistent racial discrimination in the West, the rise of religious fundamentalism, and the social crises enveloping much of the developing world. This talk will re-examine Fanon’s contributions to ongoing debates over race, racism, and recognition in light of the intellectual sources that motivated much of his work—especially Marxist theory and Hegelian philosophy.

Peter Hudis is author of Frantz Fanon: Philosopher of the Barricades (Pluto Press, 2015) and Marx’s Concept of the Alternative to Capitalism (Brill, 2012). He has edited or co-edited numerous works, including The Power of Negativity: Selected Writings on the Dialectic of Hegel and Marx, by Raya Dunayevskaya (Lexington, 1992) and The Rosa Luxemburg Reader (Monthly Review Books, 2006). He is currently general editor of The Complete Works of Rosa Luxemburg, which will make all of her work available in 14 volumes (3 volumes have appeared so far). He is Professor of Philosophy and Humanities at Oakton Community College in the U.S.

KRISIS

KRISIS

TWO PERSPECTIVES ON ECONOMIC CRISIS UNDER CAPITALISM, FROM KARL MARX AND ROSA LUXEMBURG

SUNDAY, JUNE 28, 2015

6:00-9:00 PM

Westside Peace Center

3916 Sepulveda Blvd., near Venice Blvd. (free parking in rear)

Suite 101-102, press #22 at door to get into building

Culver City (LA area)

SPEAKERS:

Ali Kiani, Iranian Marxist activist, translator, and International Marxist-Humanist Organization member

Gene Warren, longtime Marxist and founding member of Solidarity

Two major alternative Marxist theories of economic crisis are

(1) the tendential decline in rate of profit as developed by in Marx, CAPITAL, Vol. III, Chs. 13-15, online here: https://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1894-c3/ch13.htm ;

(2) Overproduction/underconsumption, as found in Luxemburg, ANTI-CRITIQUE, Ch. 1 (The Questions at Issue and first few pages of next chapter), online here: https://www.marxists.org/archive/luxemburg/1915/anti-critique/ch01.htm

This meeting will examine these two theoretical positions in terms of both the causes of crises and what is needed to overcome them and capitalism itself.

WHY IS THERE UNEMPLOYMENT?

WHY IS THERE UNEMPLOYMENT?

WHY ARE THOSE WITH JOBS OVERWORKED?

WHAT CAN WE DO?

SUNDAY, MAY 3, 2015

7:00-10:00 PM

Westside Peace Center

3916 Sepulveda Blvd., near Venice Blvd. (free parking in rear)

Suite 101-102, press #22 at door to get into building

Culver City (LA area)

SPEAKERS:

Ali Kiani, Iranian Marxist activist and translator

Sarah Mason, former Occupy LA activist

Questions to be addressed:

**Why is the U.S. economy characterized by persistent unemployment for tens of millions? Does it stem from the downturn since 2008, from neoliberal capitalism, or is it a permanent feature of capitalism itself?

**Why at the same time are tens of millions required to work long hours, often far beyond the 40-hour-week?  Why has the 40-hour standard, in place for 80 years, not been reduced?

**Are more jobs the solution to unemployment, or does the whole concept of work and wage labor need to be questioned?

Those seeking more background before the meeting might consult these readings:

Marx, “The Progressive Production of a Relative Surplus Population or Industrial Reserve Army,” in CAPITAL, Vol. 1 (14 pp.)

Marx, “The Struggle for a Normal Working Day,” in CAPITAL, Vol. 1, Ch. 10, section 6 (24 pp.)

Peter Frase, “Post-Work: A Guide for the Perplexed,” in JACOBIN 2-25-13 (3 pp.)

WHAT IS CAPITALISM?  AND HOW TO ABOLISH IT?

SUNDAY, JANUARY 18, 2015

6:00-8:30 PM

Westside Peace Center

3916 Sepulveda Blvd., near Venice Blvd. (free parking in rear)

Suite 101-102, press #22 at door to get into building

Culver City (LA area)

SPEAKERS:

Matt Owen, labor and Latin America solidarity activist

Sarah Mason, former Occupy LA activist

As we view the current crises – over racist police murder and brutality, endless war, poverty wages, and environmental destruction – activists are increasingly looking at capitalism as the underlying source of these problems and the obstacle to their solution.  While many point to neoliberal capitalism as the culprit, this implicitly suggests that another, more humane and just capitalism is possible.  This meeting will take a different tack, examining capitalism as such, as a system in need of total uprooting.

Background readings for those interested these questions are almost limitless, but for starters we suggest Marx’s “Wage Labor and Capital,” a short text written for workers.

AFTER FERGUSON, THERE IS NO JUSTICE IN AMERICA – Statement of the International Marxist-Humanist Organization
There is no justice in America—not for victims of police abuse, and surely not for Blacks and Latinos who are enduring the oppressive apparatus an American “civilization” that long ago shed its last trace
of humanity.

LAPD KETTLES FERGUSON DEMONSTRATORS: A PARTICIPANT’S ACCOUNT – by Robert “Gabe” Gabrielsky
Account by a longtime socialist and labor activist of the arrest by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) of over 100 Ferguson support demonstrators who took to the streets on November 26, and of their inhuman treatment in jail.

SYRIA: REVOLUTIONARIES CAUGHT BETWEEN ISIS AND US IMPERIALISM — Statement of the International Marxist-Humanist Organization
All eyes are on Kobane, Syria, where Kurdish forces, women as well as men, are under threat of extermination from the reactionary ISIS, even as they seek to defend their social gains. They are doing so in the face of several other forces of reaction, whether US imperialism, the genocidal Assad regime, or the virulently anti-Kurdish Turkish regime.

IS THIS THE END OF DEMOCRACY? ON THE MIDDLE EAST AFTER ISIS – by Mehmet Tas
A long-time Turkish activist discusses how the potential unleashed by the Arab Revolutions risked being stifled by the most recent incarnations of Islamic fundamentalism as well as the short sighted

HEALTH CARE ONLY IN U.S.A.: THE TOO OFTEN DEADLY AND TRULY ABSURD — by Lenore Daniels
This narrative of an experience in the “health” care system by a leading writer on Black liberation and feminism underlines how today, more than ever, illness in the U.S. is big business and a source of
relentless profit—with the needs of the human individual rendered almost completely superfluous.

MARXISM AND ECOLOGY

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 19, 2014

SPEAKERS:

Kevin Anderson, author of Marx at the Margins

Cristina A., youth activist and participant in NY climate march

Lisa Lubow, historian and activist

At an objective level, the ecological crisis has reached new heights of urgency, while at a subjective level, a massive movement against climate change and fossil fuels has formed, as seen most recently in the 400,000+ march in New York.  Within this movement, including in LA, a strong “system change” tendency, which puts the question of capitalism itself on the agenda, has emerged.  The speakers will respond to this new situation by considering Marxism and ecology both in theory and in practice.

CAPITALISM’S WORLD OF ENDLESS CRISIS AND UPHEAVAL: IS THERE A WAY OUT?

SUNDAY, JUNE 15, 2014

6:00-8:00 PM

Westside Peace Center

3916 Sepulveda Blvd., near Venice Blvd. (Free parking in rear)

Suite 101-102, press #22 at door to get into building

SPEAKERS:

Kevin Anderson, author of MARX AT THE MARGINS and LENIN, HEGEL, AND WESTERN MARXISM

Robert “Gabe” Gabrielsky, longtime socialist and labor activist

The six-year-long global economic crisis has placed in stark relief the fact that capitalism serves as a constraint on the development of the vast majority of the world’s population, while enriching the few at an unprecedented level. At the same time, we have also witnessed in this period the rise of revolutionary and protest movements on a scale unprecedented since the 1960s and 1970s.

This meeting will explore issues such as:

(1) whether the present crisis is an outgrowth of neoliberal policies or of long-term economic stagnation in the major capitalist economies;

(2) the added impact of the crisis on Blacks, Latino/as and women and the new forms of opposition this has engendered, from the Trayvon Martin protests to the abortion rights movement;

(3) the contradictory legacy of global forms of protest and revolution over the past several years, from the Arab revolutions and the Occupy movement to the more recent upsurges in Turkey, Bosnia, and Ukraine;

(4) the specific historical contribution of Marxist-Humanism as illustrated most recently by A DREADFUL DECEIT: THE MYTH OF RACE FROM THE COLONIAL ERA TO OBAMA’S AMERICA, which contains Jacqueline Jones’s widely read exploration of the life and work of Charles Denby (Simon Owens), the Black autoworker who was, along with Raya Dunayevskaya, the co-founder of Marxist-Humanism in the U.S.

The 2013 Gezi Park protests constituted a new type of horizontal social struggle that went beyond earlier Turkish politics, whether leftist or nationalist.  This movement, which involved a new generation of youth occupying public space to oppose environmental destruction and commodification of public land, took place in the context of the global upheavals since 2011, especially the Arab revolutions and the Occupy movement.  The repression and demagogy with which the state responded to the nationwide protests set off by Gezi Park have undermined the ideological control mechanisms of Turkish capitalism under Erdogan’s Justice and Development Party (AKP).  Turkey’s international reputation as a democratic “model” for the Muslim world –as touted by the global media — has also been tarnished. Nonetheless, the AKP’s victory in the municipal elections of March 2014 demonstrates the new challenges ahead of the movement.
