THE ARABS AND THE HOLOCAUST

Gilbert Achcar: The Arabs and the Holocaust

London Review Bookshop – Tuesday 21 September at 7.00 p.m

The conflict in Israel-Palestine is a war not only over land, but over narratives, and, not least, competing claims of victimhood, pitting refugees from Nazi Europe against Palestinian refugees of the Nakba. Not surprisingly, each side has sought to deny the significance — even the very reality — of the other’s tragedy.

In recent years, Holocaust denial has been on the rise in the Arab-Muslim world, with the disintegration of the ‘peace process’, and Israel’s unconditional defenders in the West have sought to characterise Arabs as inveterate anti-Semites, bent on Israel’s — even the Jewish people’s — destruction.

In The Arabs and the Holocaust, Gilbert Achcar sets the record straight, providing the first systematic analysis by an Arab intellectual of Arab responses to the Nazi extermination of European Jewry. Adam Shatz, a senior editor at the LRB, will chair a discussion of Gilbert Achcar’s work with a panel including Achcar himself, Karma Nabulsi, Fellow in Politics, St Edmund Hall, Oxford University and a former PLO representative, and Jane Caplan, St Antony’s College, Oxford.
