UEA Revisited - September 2009STUDENTSHIPS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF EAST ANGLIA

The School of Political, Social and International Studies at The University of East Anglia is inviting applications for a number of PhD studentships – some funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council and some by the University.

No areas are specifically asked for – but we would be very pleased indeed to receive applications from students interested in contemporary social, political or cultural theory and/or students working on radical politics, protest and similar.

Links to two adverts are below – the deadline is January 31st so please do circulate far and wide or invite students you know to apply to us.

Best,

Alan Finlayson (UEA)

University of East Anglia – a great place to study, and Norwich is a fine city. I did my first degree there (in philosophy and economic history) and a postgraduate Diploma in Sociology. I really enjoyed the experience. Ruth Rikowski also did her degree there: in sociology and economic history. That’s where we met, in 1975. Our youngest son, Gregory, is currently doing a degree in Film Studies at UEA. Glenn Rikowski

Christmas 2

THE FESTIVE SEASON

Happy Christmas!

And all Best Wishes for 2013!

Good to see that the ancient Mayans got their sums wrong!

My blogs here to All that is Solid for Glenn Rikowski will be resumed in the New Year.

Next year, I intend to write more stuff of my own (and not primarily for students, either) – rather then just advertising other people’s!

I am a real person! Someone suggested that this is some kind of automatic left-wing advertising website, with no actual living blogger in the background!

ANTHROPOLIGICAL MATERIALISM AND MATERIALISM OF ENCOUNTER: REINTERPRETING OUR PRESENT IN THE WAKE OF WALTER BENJAMIN AND LOUIS ALTHUSSER

Call for Participation

German-French summer school, organised by the DFH Saarbrücken 2012

Anthropological Materialism and Materialism of Encounter: Reinterpreting our Present in the Wake of Walter Benjamin and Louis Althusser

A Cooperation of the University of Potsdam and the University Paris-Sorbonne (ParisIV)

Location: University of Potsdam, Institute of Philosophy, Am Neuen Palais 10 (Building 9, Room 1.14), 144469 Potsdam

Date: July 16. – 20. 2012

This cross-cultural and interdisciplinary summer school aims to foster an innovative dialog between the philosophies of Walter Benjamin (1892-1940) and Louis Althusser (1918-1990). After the self-confident liberalism of the 1980s and 90s proclaimed the post-histoire and the end of all utopias, it is today all the more necessary to debate the real frontiers of the global social and political order from a non-dogmatic and unorthodox materialist point of view. To approximate such a materialist perspective, this summer school seeks to interrogate and compare Walter Benjamin’s “anthropological materialism” and Louis Althusser’s “materialism of encounter”. We cordially invite young academics – primarily graduate and Ph.D. students from France and Germany– to propose their research projects or to act as respondents to plenary lectures from a series of renowned Althusser and Benjamin scholars from the fields of philosophy, philology, psychoanalysis, art history, and political theory.

Further Information: http://anthropologicalmaterialism.hypotheses.org/

Organisation:

Prof. Hans-Peter Krüger (Potsdam)
Prof. Gérard Raulet (Paris)
Dr. Marc Berdet (Paris/Potsdam)
Dr. Thomas Ebke (Potsdam)

'A Dangerous Method'

THE FREUD EXPOSURE

Our youngest son, Gregory Rikowski, has recently been taking a very lively and critical interest in Psychology, Psychoanalysis and the work of Sigmund Freud and of the Freud family in general.

Leading on from this, he wrote an article about it all, entitled ‘Freudian Crisis in the Modern Era’, which is now on our ‘The Flow of Ideas’ website, see: http://www.flowideas.co.uk/print.php?page=402&slink=yes.

Continuing with this theme, Ruth and I have recently been to see the newly released film: ‘A Dangerous Method’, which focuses on Jung and Freud (although more on the former). The film is directed by David Cronenberg and stars Keira Knightley, as mentally tormented Sabina Spielrein, a Jewish Russian-born patient of Jung’s; Michael Fassbender as Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung, and Viggo Mortensen as Sigmund Freud.

More can be found on these issues at Serendipitous Moments, Ruth Rikowski’s blog, in a post with the title of ‘The Freud Exposure’: http://ruthrikowskiim.blogspot.com/2012/02/freud-exposure.html

A TRIBUTE TO MY FATHER

Kurt Richards, Kurt Rikowski (14th June 1927 – 15th February 2009)

It has taken me some time to get the psychological strength for putting the Eulogy I wrote for my father’s funeral in the public domain. It can now be read on The Flow of Ideas web site.

SUMMER GARDEN PARTY

Ruth Rikowski describes beautifully (with pictures) the Summer Garden Party that we had at our home in Forest Gate on 22nd August 2009.

It was a lovely day, and the first party we have run for many, many years. I am sure there will be more!

A special thanks to those who brought food and wine, and to those who played musical instruments and sang, and Alexander Rikowski for running the barbeque!
