Organised by the Centre for Applied Philosophy, Politics and Ethics (CAPPE), University of Brighton, and co-sponsored by the Campaign for the Public University, the Council for the Defence of British Universities, and UCU at the University of Brighton, this two-day conference on Higher Education – What it is for, and how to defend it: towards a Charter for Higher Education in the UK investigates the current changes that British Higher Education (in England and Wales) is undergoing.

The Convention is designed to enable colleagues from the full range of university disciplines to address how to preserve a properly described ‘higher education’ from the effects of current proposals, and from the redefinition of universities and of higher learning. As a complement to the Council for the Defence of British Universities and the Campaign for the Public University, it will consider, and adopt a draft of, a Charter for Higher Education that the organisers hope will be debated and refined in most or all institutions of higher learning throughout the UK, and which could then form the core of values around which colleagues could cohere, whether as members of Councils and Academic Boards, Faculty or School Boards, as members of their Course Committees, or as union members.

The Convention has been occasioned by the 25th anniversary of the Humanities Programme at the University of Brighton. Born in adversity in 1988 – in the midst of an earlier assault on the Humanities – it has survived and thrived by resisting both governmental pressure and temporary fashions in education and pedagogy. It is an interdisciplinary, non-modular range of degree courses based on small-group teaching, and research-focused student development.

Experiencing Higher Education: Global Trends and Transformations

The SRHE extends a very warm welcome to all who wish to participate in one or both of these conferences, by submitting papers for presentation and/or by attending as a delegate and contributing to the many different discussions and debates within this vibrant three-day event. The Conference welcomes papers relating to further, higher, undergraduate, postgraduate and professional education in a wide range of research domains and is a highly participative event offering a range of plenaries and smaller discussion groups and seminars.

The Society’s Annual Conferences are truly international events bringing together delegates and contributors from over 40 countries. We invite researchers and scholars from the many forms of higher education globally to contribute to these Conferences, stimulating international debate on the way in which higher education is responding to economic, social, political and cultural pressures and both re-defining and re-asserting its nature and purpose. As higher education researchers, we aim to provide research insights and knowledge to inform and guide universities, governments and societies.

Conference Theme

The theme for 2013 is Experiencing Higher Education: Global Trends and Transformations.

Higher education globally is continuing to undergo change at a rapid pace and the experiences of all participants, those who study and those who work within the sector, are being transformed as a consequence. Presentations and discussions will explore global trends and examine what research into higher education tells us about the impact of these changes, with a particular focus on how higher education experiences are now evolving in a global context and embracing new technology.

The Conference will offer the opportunity to explore what it means, in the very broadest sense, to be part of the higher education academic community as a student, an academic researcher or teacher, a leader, a developer or other role.

Types of Contribution

You are invited to contribute to this debate in a variety of ways: by presenting a paper, sharing in a symposium, including work of a conceptual or theoretical nature, by preparing a poster or by organising a round table, on any aspect of this year’s theme or your own research interests. Empirical and scholarly research from a wide range of perspectives is welcome. Registrations from delegates not presenting work this year are also warmly welcomed. The deadline for submission of proposals is Friday 28 June 2013

The SRHE Newer Researchers’ Conference on the same theme will take place at the Celtic Manor one day in advance of the SRHE Annual Research Conference. This is an excellent event for postgraduate students and newer researchers, providing the opportunity to present research work in a nurturing environment and participate in a number of seminars and discussions. 10 years ago, in November 1999 an alliance of direct action activists, environmentalists and trade unionists shut down the meeting of the World Trade Organisation in Seattle, stopping the next trade round of Capitalist Globalisation. In the process they sparked a Movement of Movements right across the globe its slogan became ‘Another World is Possible’.

This November exactly 10 years from that momentous demonstration, and with most of the predictions of the movements rapidly coming true what with the crisis of the economy, a permanent state of war and the collapse of our eco-system wrecking lives across the planet, the rich and powerful meet again in Copenhagen to discuss the next Climate treaty after Kyoto, yet again activists are preparing to challenge the idea that the Market can solve the problems of the world, and take another step toward that possible world after Capitalism.

Signs of Revolt is an exhibition that weaves together the story of the past decades social movements, drawing out the influences and connections between and across the movements against Capitalism, War and Climate Change. Using archive material and documentary photography and video from movement photographers and filmmakers, it reveals the story of how we got from Seattle to Copenhagen.

Interspersed in this narrative are works by artist and designer activists and collectives, produced during, within and for the movements, this is the first time such a collection has been brought together in the UK and it will be a chance to reflect upon and celebrate the new creative impulses that the movements spawned and the possibilities for developing the creative capacity of future movements, these issues will also be discussed in greater depth during a series of talks during the exhibition.

As Capitalism threatens our very existence, Signs of Revolt defiantly maps out possible routes to a future filled with hope…

There will be workshops held by the editors of the Supporting Journals. In these workshops information regarding to the vision, scopes, review process, new trends, expectations from authors, etc. will be given of their Journals.

Participators will get the chance to express their opinions and ask questions to the editors. This process is expected to inevitably help building long-lasting relationships between participators and editors.

There will be simultaneous translation from English to Turkish in the workshop sessions. Number of chairs in the workshops is limited therefore it is suggested to sign up on early date.

Researchers who are unable to resolve the funding issue concerning the conference expenses will be provided with an alternative approach for participation, namely, Virtual Online Presentation. Those who would like to make their presentations online from their home countries will also be awarded with a certificate and their papers will be considered for publications similar to other participants as if they were present physically. Those who would like to make use of the Virtual Online Presentation facility will be requested to send their virtual posters or other soft copy materials such as power point presentations to the secretariat. In addition, these participants who would prefer to make use of the Virtual Online Presentation facility may also contribute to the conference through video conferencing.

Volumizer Resurrection Eleven



The Volumizer was Glenn Rikowski’s AOL blog. It was started up on 29th September 2005. On 30th September 2008, AOL announced that all of its Hometown products, including its blogs and newsletters, would be closed down on 31st October 2008.
