The London International Conference on Education (LICE) is an international refereed conference dedicated to the advancement of the theory and practices in education. The LICE promotes collaborative excellence between academicians and professionals from Education. The aim of LICE is to provide an opportunity for academicians and professionals from various educational fields with cross-disciplinary interests to bridge the knowledge gap, promote research esteem and the evolution of pedagogy. The LICE-2015 invites research papers that encompass conceptual analysis, design implementation and performance evaluation. All accepted papers will appear in the proceedings and modified version of selected papers will be published in special issues peer reviewed journals.

DEFEND PUBLIC EDUCATION: UCU CONFERENCE

The ‘Defend Public Education: from cradle to grave’ conference organised by UCU and supported by NUT, NASUWT and NUS is on Saturday 1st February.

This conference will bring together key speakers, practitioners and participants from across the education sector to discuss current policies, along with what members can do to defend the principle of education from cradle to grave in the age of austerity.

Our speakers include Bonnie Greer and Huw Lewis, Minister of Education and Skills in the Welsh Assembly government. The conference will also feature speakers from UCU, NUT, Compass, UnionLearn and the Action for ESOL Campaign. Further details of the agenda along with speakers and workshops is available here.

The conference is free and will be held at the Ambassadors Hotel, Upper Woburn Place, London, WC1H OHX between 10 and 4. Refreshments and a light lunch will be available, but we will be unable to reimburse travel and accommodation expenses for UCU members on this occasion.

We expect this conference to be extremely popular and would urge members to register early to avoid disappointment. The deadline for registration is the 24 January and you can book your place here.

In the late 1880s, workers (often unskilled or semi-skilled, often migrants and often working in casualised and precarious environments) organised militant industrial unions to fight back against their bosses. Faced with increasingly similar conditions today, can we build a New Unionism for the 21st century that transforms and revolutionises the modern labour movement?

DevXS is a FREE developer marathon spread across three days, where students from across the UK and beyond are encouraged to team up and build cool things that contribute to university life. All you need to do is get here! If you are not a student, it would be great if you could pass this email onto relevant people in your organisation.

Please note we actively encourage you to speak to computer science tutors, who are also welcome to attend as long as they bring along some students! Tutors might be able to organise a team of you to attend (e.g. travelling by minibus etc). The Ethics of Widening Participation Seminar Series

 

Ethical dilemmas in widening participation: issues of pedagogy and identity

Dr Jacqueline Stevenson, Leeds Metropolitan University

For more than a decade various governmental policy initiatives have been implemented in the UK to increase the number of students attending higher education. However, whilst these initiatives have been widely critiqued there has been almost no consideration as to the ethical implications of widening participation. This is a significant omission since both WP policy and practice give rise to serious ethical concerns, not least being whether we should continue to increase access to HE at all knowing that many widening participation students are more likely to drop out, get worse degrees, graduate with higher levels of debt and be less employable post-graduation than their peers. Drawing on issues of pedagogy, student support and both staff and student identities, this presentation will act as a ‘think-piece’ offering an opportunity to consider the implications of widening participation from both an ‘ethics of justice’ and ‘ethics of care’ perspective. 

 

Widening Participation and the Capability Approach

Dr Michael F. Watts, University of Cambridge

This paper uses the capability approach to address the ethics of the widening participation agenda.  The capability approach de-emphasises the significance of commodities (including educational commodities) in favour of the opportunities they enable in pursuit of the good life.  It demands a context-based understanding of how the socio-cultural circumstances of young people influence the real opportunities they have to recognise the value of and engage with higher education.  This more nuanced engagement with the concept of well-being recognises that the inevitability of human diversity generates different realisations of the good life.  It also enables engagement with the adaptation of preferences that continue to bedevil attempts to increase access to higher education.  The focus on freedom, illustrated here with reference to a number of empirical studies, frames a more just approach to widening participation that is concerned with what young people have rather than what they lack.

30 JUNE – STRIKE FOR OUR FUTURE!

Today’s students are tomorrow’s pensioners…

30 June – Strike for our future!

On June 30 nearly a million workers could be on strike together, from the PCS, UCU, NUT and ATL unions. This includes teachers and education workers in schools, colleges and universities.

Workers are striking to stop changes to their pension schemes. Bosses and the government want workers to pay more and receive less. Some workers could lose tens of thousands of pounds that they have already paid in.

Young people who have already been hit by education cuts, tuition fees and the scrapping of EMA would also have to look forward to growing old in poverty. French students took action alongside workers to defend pensions last year. Their slogan was “today’s students are tomorrow’s pensioners.”

Student protests alone caused a major crisis for this government. Students and workers together can take the resistance to cuts even further.
