A major international conference, with plenary speakers and large parallel sessions, exploring where the study of history is currently heading. The conference draws inspiration from the capacious legacy of the late Eric Hobsbawm, but is not a memorial event. We aim, rather, to bring together discussion about what we are currently doing as socially-committed historians, where we are headed, and what it means to be an historian in the twenty-first century.

Postcolonial theory has become enormously influential as a framework for understanding the Global South. It is also a school of thought popular because of its rejection of the supposedly universalizing categories of the Enlightenment. In this devastating critique, mounted on behalf of the radical Enlightenment tradition, Vivek Chibber offers the most comprehensive response yet to postcolonial theory. Focusing on the hugely popular Subaltern Studies project, Chibber shows that its foundational arguments are based on a series of analytical and historical misapprehensions. He demonstrates that it is possible to affirm a universalizing theory without succumbing to Eurocentrism or reductionism.

In a period of global restructuring, unrestricted capital has eroded the traditional distinctions between nations and nationhood. In ‘The Politics of Postcolonialism’, Rumina Sethi devises a new form of postcolonial studies that makes sense of these dramatic changes.

Returning to the origins of the discipline, Sethi identifies it as a tool for political protest and activism among people of the third world. Using a sophisticated mix of spatial theory and local politics, she examines the uneven terrain of contemporary anti-capitalism and political upsurges in Africa, Asia and Latin America, emphasising postcolonial politics, dissent and resistance. Her analysis shows that as the traditional means of direct political control have largely lost their hold, postcolonial cultures, now dominated by neoliberalism, need to seek fresh ways to express their discontent.

This original and persuasive work frees the discipline from its current preoccupation with hybridity and multiculturalism, giving students of politics, cultural studies and international relations a new perspective on postcolonialism.

RUMINA SETHI is a Professor in the department of English and Cultural Studies at Panjab University, Chandigarh, India. She is the author of ‘Myths of the Nation: National Identity and Literary Representation’ (1999). She wrote her doctoral thesis atTrinityCollege,Cambridge, and was a British Academy Fellow at Wolfson College, Oxford. She was awarded the Rockefeller Foundation Fellowship in 2006.

The Italian philosopher and militant Antonio Negri has been a provocative and controversial figure for over forty years. He has been a professor of law at the University of Padua, a labor organizer in the Veneto, a political prisoner in Rome, a member of Italian parliament, a political refugee in Paris and most recently, as a consequence of the success of his book Empire (written in collaboration with American Michael Hardt), an internationally influential theorist of globalization. He has written over forty other books, which have been translated into dozens of languages, and his work has challenged orthodoxy in intellectual history, political science, labor relations, theology, and literary and cultural studies.

This book is the first comprehensive study of Negri’s work in any language. It follows the development of Negri’s critical framework and theoretical innovations from his early work as a historian of legal philosophy in the Fifties, through his period of intense and unconventional leftist activism during the Sixties and Seventies and his imprisonment and exile during the Eighties and Nineties, culminating in a clear, thorough and evenhanded account of his important contributions to the emerging study of – and struggle over – globalization. The Program Committee of the North American Labor History Conference invites proposals for sessions, papers, and roundtables on “Insurgency and Resistance” for our thirty-fourth annual meeting.

In his texts of the 1950s, the French philosopher Maurice Merleau-Ponty assigns artistic creation an ontological value, while at the same time qualifying its power: the artistic creation is a consistent deformation rooted in a subjective experience, but without positing a ‘stable’ subject (who creates and is in their turn caught within the internal movement of creation, who constructs and is at the same time constructed – this is the chiasmus upon which our ontological difference is based); it proceeds through ‘imbalances’ of the prosaic world order: displacements, lines of force, inaugurations, processes of emptying and psychological investment – by means of that activity going beyond the distinction between transformation and invention which Merleau-Ponty would term ‘prose’. His 1950s texts also, however, voice the need for a translation of the same analysis from the sphere of the artistic creation into that of politics. By which forces or energies and along which breaking lines should this translation take place? And then: from within the flesh of the world, in virtue of which inauguration?

Antonio Negri (1933) was Professor of Theory of the state atPadua University (Italy) and Director of the Padua University Political Science Institute. He subsequently taught inFrance, atParis VIII University, Ecole Normale Supérieure and Collège International de Philosophie. He has published several books on the history of modern philosophy (particularly on Spinoza and Marx) and numerous essays dealing with juridical and political theory, notably a trilogy, written together with Michael Hardt: Empire (Harvard U.P., 2000), Multitude (Penguin Books, 2004) and Commonwealth (Harvard U.P., 2009).

I am inviting you to the first seminar of the new academic year of Queen Mary’s Centre for the Study of Global Security and Development which will take place at 4.15pm in room 3.16 in Arts (2), Queen Mary, Mile End Campus, on Wednesday October 5th.

My colleague, Jeff Webber (http://www.politics.qmul.ac.uk/staff/drjefferywebber.html)  will present on ‘ Dispatches from Latin America: A Commentary on Recent and Ongoing Anti-Imperialist Struggles in Bolivia, Honduras and Ecuador’.

This will be an informal session where Jeff will report back from his recent field work on local popular anti-imperialist mobilizations and struggles in the region.

Robin Blackburn, former editor of New Left Review, and author of a trilogy of books on the history of slavery in the New World, the latest of which is “The American Crucible: Slavery, Emancipation and Human Rights”, as well as “An Unfinished Revolution: Karl Marx and Abraham Lincoln”.

Title: Marxism and IPE: New Critical Engagements

Abstract:

Accumulation through dispossession, new enclosures, rent becoming profit, general intellect, immaterial labor, multitudes and the common. All of these are Marxist concepts of some variety or another which although prevalent in geography, sociology, anthropology and cultural studies still have not made their way into International Political Economy, where Marxist perspectives remain marginal and somewhat parochial (limited to historical materialist and world-systems analyses).

This panel calls for papers interested in exploring issues of global capital and empire from fresh theoretical angles such as those offered by autonomist Marxists like Hardt & Negri, Christian Marazzi, Sandro Mezzadra, Franco Berardi (bifo), and Silvia Federici, normative Marxists like George Caffentzis, Massimo de Angelis, David Graeber, and Harry Cleaver and Marxist geographers like Saskia Sassen, David Harvey, and Jamie Peck.

We welcome both theoretical engagements with questions of accumulation and valorization in internation al politics as well as more specific studies of the politics of everyday life, e.g., financialization, labor, education, consumption, culture, identity and ecology.

Launch of the Journal of Critical Globalisation Studies Issue 4: ‘Empire in Decline?’

The launch of the forthcoming special issue of the JCGS on ‘Crisis’ will be introduced by past contributor, Francis Shor, giving a presentation of his new book, Dying Empire: U.S Imperialism and Global Resistance, followed by a drinks reception, at:

Royal Holloway College, Bedford Square, 2 Gower Street, WC1E 6DP, London

April 27th from 16.00 to 19.00

Is theUnited States an empire in decline, as argued by world systems theorists? Indeed, can theUS even be categorized as an “empire”? This presentation, based on material from Shor’s latest book “Dying Empire,” will highlight the economic, geopolitical, and ideological/cultural dimensions of the rise and fall of the US Empire.

Although focused on the long trajectory of US empire, special attention will be given to the post WWII construction of American global hegemony and the more recent flashpoints indicative of the decline of that hegemony.
