The Ireland International Conference on Education (IICE) is a biannual conference which takes place in April and October each year. The October IICE-2014 will be held from the 24th to 28th of October, 2014 in Dublin.

The IICE is an international refereed conference dedicated to the advancement of the theory and practices in education.

The IICE promotes collaborative excellence between academicians and professionals from Education.
The aim of IICE is to provide an opportunity for academicians and professionals from various educational fields with
cross-disciplinary interests to bridge the knowledge gap, promote research esteem and the evolution of pedagogy. The IICE 2014 invites research papers that encompass conceptual analysis, design implementation and performance evaluation. All the accepted papers will appear in the proceedings and modified version of selected papers will be published in special issues peer reviewed journals.

STUDY DEMOLISHES THE MYTH THAT U.S. WORKERS LACK SKILLS

Over the last few years, the media has blared warnings that a “skills gap” among American workers is preventing full economic recovery.

According to this narrative, the problem is not an inadequate supply of family-sustaining jobs; it’s a workforce lacking in skills, training and education. The skills gap thesis has been spread by influential pundits like the New York Times’ Thomas Friedman, top CEOs like Caterpillar’s Doug Oberhelman, and PIMCO hedge fund owner Bill Gross, who declared, “Our labor force is too expensive and poorly educated for today’s marketplace.”

But in a study released this week called “The Skills Gap and Unemployment in Wisconsin: Separating Fact from Fiction,” urbanologist Marc Levine, a professor of history and economic development at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, applies a data-laden sledgehammer to this notion. And while Levine’s report focused primarily on Wisconsin, his critique of the “skills gap” notion has national implications.

‘SILENT GRINDING, BIT BY BIT’: IN THE OCCUPATION AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SUSSEX

The last two years have seen an explosion of student strikes from Chile to Italy to Quebec. These do not yet account for a full-blown student revolt, but they are seeds of political resistance that are some of the most promising in quite some time. They have been remarkable in their tactical ingenuity, the steadfastness of the student rebels and the militancy of demands for the decommodification of education and the universality of access. The fierceness of the austerity agenda in Britain is opening up a new front in student struggles.

After three weeks, an impressive student occupation at the University of Sussex against the privatization of services on campus is still in full-swing, even expanding, with flash occupations and disruptions of different buildings and events on campus last Friday. On February 28 I sat down with Maia Pal, a leading organizer of the campaign, to discuss its origins and dynamics to date.

Since taking office in November, Toronto Mayor Rob Ford has begun implementing his own personal agenda … an agenda that is frighteningly similar to the Tea Party Republicans in Wisconsin and Ohio whose actions have sparked massive protests. Ford has made it clear that he is hell bent on selling off public services, derailing public transit, targeting trade unions and rolling-back Toronto’s environmental plans. This style of “aggressive conservatism” is designed to usher in a new wave of Harris-style cuts across Ontario.

CANADIAN WORKER CO-OP FEDERATION (CWCF) URGES GOVERNMENT SUPPORT FOR CONVERSIONS TO WORKER CO-OPS

The Canadian Worker Co-operative Federation (CWCF) has called on the federal government to provide funding to support conversions to worker co-ops.

Appearing before the Standing Committee on Finance on February 15, CWCF president Alain Bridault and executive director Hazel Corcoran said worker co-ops could meet the challenge posed by the imminent retirements of large numbers of “baby boomers”.

“We know that with the retirement of very large numbers of workers from the baby-boomer generation, we shall face a serious problem of manpower shortages,” Mr. Brideault said, adding that the democratic and participatory nature of worker co-ops would be attractive to potential employees.

WISCONSIN SPIRIT SWEEPS ACROSS THE MIDWEST

The spirit of Wisconsin is inspiring union members in Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan to jam capitol buildings by the tens of thousands to fight a raft of union-busting bills in their states.

By aiming their attack against such a broad range of working people—teachers to state workers to building trades—conservative legislators and their shadowy billionaire funders unintentionally created the conditions for unity.

By making their aggression so naked, the legislators scotched the usual impulse from most labor leaders to think they could negotiate a way out behind closed doors. When the right took off the gloves, labor finally put up its dukes.

CULTURAL CONSULTING SERVICES PROMOTER, MAYWORKS

Mayworks Festival of Working People and the Arts Contract Position: Cultural Consulting Services Promoter (Contract position, March – May 2011)

This short term contract position will undertake targeted outreach and promotion of Mayworks’ cultural consulting services to the union movement.

The primary outcome is the expansion and diversification of Mayworks’ consulting services in order to maintain and increase earned revenue through consulting services. The contract will also serve to raise the profile of the festival in the labour movement as well as build and maintain festival audiences.

General overview of activities to be implemented*:

March/April 2011
– Identify upcoming union conferences and conventions
– Identify unions for targeted outreach
– Design and print consulting services flyers, ‘give-away’ item and slide show
– Print business cards

April 2011
– Mail out of promotional flyer with letter, follow-up with email, phone calls
– Start targeted outreach to identified unions for general promotion
– Set meetings, start making any travel arrangements**
– Pitch specific event programming to unions with upcoming conferences, meetings or conventions
– Meet with unions and continue outreach

May 2011
– Negotiate any new contracts
– Look into social enterprise umbrella organisations that would support Mayworks or provide networks
– Table at union conferences
– Any last meetings, outreach, contract negotiations
– Wrap up promotional work
– Write final report
– Evaluate success of promotional tour, and next steps

*At times, working in consultation/collaboration with graphic designer **Potential travel to Ottawa for promotional meetings with Canadian Union of Postal Workers and the Public Service Alliance of Canada. Travel expenses will be covered by Mayworks.

Hours of work and remuneration:
The total work hours for the initiative is 100 hours from March 2011 through May 2011 (at least 40 hours per month April and May 2011).  Remuneration for the project is $2710 which includes a percentage in lieu of all fringe benefits.

The applicant should have the following qualifications:
– A minimum of two years experience in event/project development and coordination
– Good working knowledge of the labour movement and social justice/activist communities
– Established networks within the labour movement an asset
– Good negotiation, outreach and promotional skills
– Ability to meet tight deadlines
– Ability to work with union members and manage different needs
– Strong written and oral communication skills

Those who would like to make use of the Virtual Online Presentation facility will be requested to send their virtual posters or other soft copy materials such as power point presentations to the secretariat. There will be workshops held by the editors of the Supporting Journals. In these workshops information regarding to the vision, scopes, review process, new trends, expectations from authors, etc. will be given of their Journals.

Participators will get the chance to express their opinions and ask questions to the editors. This process is expected to inevitably help building long-lasting relationships between participators and editors.

There will be simultaneous translation from English to Turkish in the workshop sessions. Number of chairs in the workshops is limited therefore it is suggested to sign up on early date.

Workshop programme and application form will be announced in the conference web page in the following days.

VIRTUAL PARTICIPATION

Researchers who are unable to resolve the funding issue concerning the conference expenses will be provided with an alternative approach for participation, namely, Virtual Online Presentation. Those who would like to make their presentations online from their home countries will also be awarded with a certificate and their papers will be considered for publications similar to other participants as if they were present physically. Those who would like to make use of the Virtual Online Presentation facility will be requested to send their virtual posters or other soft copy materials such as power point presentations to the secretariat. In addition, these participants who would prefer to make use of the Virtual Online Presentation facility may also contribute to the conference through video conferencing.

ABSTRACT SUBMISSION

Due to the large number of papers expected for this conference, the committee only allows an author to present two papers.  The abstracts can be one-page long (200-400 words). The abstract include Problem Statement, Purpose of Study, Methods, Findings and Results, and Conclusions and Recommendations (These elements may need some adaptation in the case of discussion papers: Background, Purpose of Study, Sources of Evidence, Main Argument, and Conclusions). Please note that some elements are optional in abstracts. The abstracts should be mailed to wces.abstracts@gmail.com

PUBLICATION OF THE PAPERS

All proceedings of the conference will be published with D.O.I. number in Procedia-Social and Behavioral Sciences Journal (ISSN: 1877-0428) by Elsevier Publications. All papers published in Procedia – Social and Behavioral Sciences Journal are also indexed by Scopus and ScienceDirect.  In addition, Elsevier Publication will be submitted to ERIC and Thomson Reuters Conference Proceedings Citation Index.

All proposals will be subjected to peer-reviews. Selected papers from the conference will be considered for extended version publication in the supporting journals. The selection rate for publication in supporting journals is 22.46% at

The London International Conference on Education (LICE) is an international refereed conference dedicated to the advancement of the theory and practices in education. The LICE promotes collaborative excellence between academicians and professionals from Education.

The aim of LICE is to provide an opportunity for academicians and professionals from various educational fields with cross-disciplinary interests to bridge the knowledge gap, promote research esteem and the evolution of pedagogy.
