CULTURAL DIFFERENCE AND SOCIAL SOLIDARITY NETWORK: 4TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
“New Directions in Reconciling Solidarity and Difference in Contemporary Societies”

Strategies for addressing problems of social solidarity in states and communities in a contemporary globalized world while respecting difference and diversity within the boundaries of those communities have become more important than ever with the problematization – and some would say decline – of multiculturalist solutions. In the last decades there has been a rise in moral panics about immigration and right-wing nationalist responses, whilst the emergence of new globalized labor flows and diasporic identities have given rise to cultural conflicts as well as mutual enrichment within urban settings. There has also been a sharper and more prejudicial relationship between western states and Islamic peoples, with a rise in Islamophobia mirroring an apparent hardening of faith-based positions on both sides, intersecting with legitimate concerns about the contradictions and conflicts between traditional faith-based positions and contemporary human rights discourse. The political enterprise of multiculturalism appears limited and presumptive in its solutions and where multiculturalism has been embraced it has been criticized in respect of class divisions, deficiencies in recognitions and redistributions and the amelioration of tensions and conflicts through rhetoric and temporary solutions to symptoms and not causes.

This conference seeks to explore the fertile grounds within and between idealistic, cosmopolitan and ‘radical’ strategies to the more pragmatic attempts to provide solutions to particular, immanent and conjunctural problems of building solidarity with difference, and to explore the intersections between different political approaches to posing solidarity with difference and the practices that constitute everyday experience for communities of difference seeking terms of solidarity.

This conference provides a space for scholars to take stock of the present context and share knowledge – specific or general, empirical or theoretical, with a view to develop and explore the possible ways forward to minimizing violence, discrimination, exclusion and oppression as the means by which difference is managed by political structures. It is hoped that the conference will facilitate the development of more constructive, democratic, participative and inclusive means of promoting solidarity without negating difference and diversity. The conference is intended to be interdisciplinary and welcomes papers from scholars whose research crosses traditional disciplinary boundaries. Papers and panels are sought for presentation at parallel sessions where each paper will have a strict maximum of 20 minutes presentation time on panels of 2 papers with 25 minutes per paper discussion time.

The main themes for which papers are sought are:
•    Applying and critiquing theories of difference
•    Dissembling and re-presenting gender: constructions of difference and/or solidarity
•    Making solidarities in the context of difference
•    Refugees, difference, law and media representations
•    Culture and politics in representations of identity and difference
•    Digital media and the making/dissembling of social movements
•    Representing multilingualism in the linguistic landscape
•    States, sectional interests and regulatory regimes: managing difference
•    Culture, art, literature, film and the performance of difference
•    The role of technologies in making representations of difference and solidarity
•    Representations of difference or re-presentations of difference: The problem of representation
•    Language hierarchies in social space
•    Cultural products and the reinforcement or dissolution of differences – the problem of consumption
•    Difference and the construction and deterioration of communities
•    Difference and technology: the changing representation of identity and difference

These themes are not exhaustive and the organizers will consider other papers relevant to the conference subject. We expect to publish a post-conference edited book, derived from the papers presented and organized around themes that reveal themselves during the conference.

There will be two keynote plenary sessions with speakers to be announced. Reflecting the conference theme in the context of the conference venue, one of these sessions will focus on aspects of these themes in Cyprus.

•    Notification of abstract acceptances and rejections is on a rolling basis (within 3 weeks of submission)
•    Online conference registration open from March 15, 2015 to May 15, 2015
•    Conference Fees to be paid by May 15, 2015

The conference language is English and all papers and presentations should be in English.

The conference fee is 395 Euros (295 Euros for students and non-participants).

NETWORKED REALMS AND HOPED-FOR FUTURES: A TRANS-GENERATIONAL DIALOGUE

CALL FOR PAPERS

During the past decades, people from all walks of life – educators, information scientists, geeks, writers, film makers etc. – envisioned various futures for the relationships between education and technologies. Step by step, the logic of technological and social development has cherry-picked the most viable options and dumped others deep into the waste bin of history. Yesterday, our present was just one of many possible futures – today, it is our only reality.

This Special Issue of the journal E-Learning and Digital Media (www.wwwords.co.uk/ELEA) invites authors to step back from the never-ending quest for new concepts and ideas and to revisit past insights into the relationships between education and technologies – including, but not limited to, the formal process of schooling. Based on analyses of historical ideas, we invite authors to reflect on the relationships between past, present and future.

What is viable today might not have been viable yesterday: history of human thought is packed with excellent ideas that once failed to make an impact because of wrong placement, timing or simply bad luck. Therefore, we are particularly interested in identification and examination of ignored/abandoned/neglected/forgotten concepts and ideas that might shed new light to our current reality and/or (re)open new and/or abandoned strands of research.

Working at the intersection of technology, psychology, sociology, history, politics, philosophy, arts, and science fiction, we welcome contributions from wide range of disciplines and inter-, trans- and anti-disciplinary research methodologies.

SUBMISSIONS
All contributions should be original and should not be under consideration elsewhere. Authors should be aware that they are writing for an international audience and should use appropriate language. All papers will be peer-reviewed, and evaluated according to their significance, originality, content, style, clarity and relevance to the journal.

THE ELECTRIC TAGORE: A VARIORUM WEBSITE

Sukanta Chaudhuri, Professor Emeritus at Jadavpur University and currently Visiting Fellow at All Souls College, Oxford, will be giving a guest lecture on Weds 20 November, 5.30pm, room G31, Foster Court, UCL.

All are welcome and refreshments will be available after the talk.

Sukanta Chaudhuri, ‘The Electronic Tagore: a Variorum Website’

This talk will offer a guided tour of Bichitra, a variorum website of the works of Rabindranath Tagore in Bengali and English. The site was created at the School of Cultural Texts and Records, Jadavpur University, India, and launched in May. It is by far the biggest literary database to date, with over 140,000 pages of primary material. There is also a full electronic bibliography, a search engine that functions as a hyperconcordance, and an innovative three-tier collation program, Prabhed.

Sukanta Chaudhuri, the principal co-ordinator of the project, will take the audience through the various features of Bichitra, in particular the new collation program and other text-processing software. He will also weave in the human story of the making of this giant website.

Hello everyone,

We have just launched our new website and are sending out several batches of newsletters to update our readers, friends, and colleagues about what has been going on over the last three months and what to expect from the organisation moving forward.

Launch of New Beta Site

– Our ambition as a group has always been to break down the barriers separating critical theoretical discourse and ‘the everyday practise of social and individual life’. In attempting to achieve this we have engaged with readers and have been working with several leading theories of alternative media and web application, to develop new ways in which a range of media projects can assist the organisation to bridge the theory-practise divide.

– One of the new features on our website includes the organisation’s Global Voice project, which acts as centralised hub or platform for the publication of non-profit research and reports.

The non-profit sector of society is notorious for its ability to encourage ethical and critical practise across many different social spheres. Drawing close links to some of the leading non-profit organisations, locally and globally, Heathwood can directly assist and support the ongoing research and practise of NPO’s in a number of fundamental ways: 1) to pull-in non-profit media, report, commentary and critique from around the world and disseminate that information in one centralised place; 2) to normatively engage with independent non-profits so as to support their efforts on a grassroots level with a highly engaged critical theory; 3) to listen to NPO’s across the globe and the struggles and conflicts they report in order to further our own understanding about social agency and structure;  and 4) to integrate non-profit research and data, which is heavily rooted in praxis, with Heathwood’s post-Frankfurt school critical theory.

– Another exciting feature that we’ve been working on for some time consists around the democratisation of media and how to make Heathwood’s site more representative of a truly social, participatory media centre.

To achieve this we have launched a new on-site comments system that allows for real-time discussion between members of the public as well as between readers/public and members of Heathwood. The aim of this new feature is to encourage over time the development of a fertile digital ground for discussion and the sharing of ideas.

Heathwood Network

We have also recently launched a new public forum called the Heathwood Network, which will further support and encourage direct discussion and engagement on a range of subjects. The forum can be accessed via the menu on our new site.

– We’ve also been developing a series of critical theory eGuides, ranging in subject from alternative education and epistemology to alternative economics and ideology critique. No launch date has been set for this programme.

-Lastly, we have been working on publishing a range of infographics, interactive media, videos and datablogs to further support our present research activity and public engagement campaigns.

New Members

We’ve welcomed a new member in past few months, Robert King, whose work in systems will be a great addition to the organisation.

We’ve also had the opportunity to work with some great people from around Europe and North America, including Glenn Rikowski, Chris Cutrone, Richard Wolff, Peter Thompson, Daniel Little, Geert Dhondt, Jeanne Willette, and others.

Moving Forward

There’s a lot planned for the upcoming year, including several new book publications and further expansion to our digital media projects.

2013 will mark the 11th anniversary of the annual Journeys Across Media (JAM) Conference for postgraduate students, organised by postgraduates working in the Department of Film, Theatre & Television at the University of Reading. JAM 2013 seeks to focus on and foster current research relating to the Body and the Digital, as today they are interactive and interdependent facets in the media of film, theatre and television; and more widely, in the areas of performance and art. It is a relationship which continues to develop and redefine cinematic, televisual and theatrical practices.

French phenomenologist Maurice Merleau-Ponty once stated: “The body is our general medium for having a world.” Today, the world of live and screened performance are perceived and received differently, due to the body’s relationship with the digital. Approaches and practices of phenomenology, embodiment, the haptic and the experiential are being re-examined as they continue to encounter digital culture in new ways. Representations and experiences of embodiment are often integral dynamics of theatre, television, film and television, and are preoccupations that can be explored through diverse media or digital influences.

This is a call for postgraduates engaging in contemporary discourses and practices relating to the Body and the Digital, to submit papers or practice-based research for the JAM 2013 Conference. Topics may include, but are not restricted to:

-Interactivity between Digital languages and the Body

-Sonic Representations of the Body in Digital Performance

-The Digitized Body in Performance

-The Role of the Body in Digital Games and Virtual Performance

-Post-Colonial Bodies in the Contemporary Moment

-Preparing the Body for Performance

-Notions of Embodiment (i.e. Violent, Disabled, Explicit)

-Traditions of Corporeally focused Film, Theatre and Television

-Embodied Spectatorship or Audiences, and Physicality

-Phenomenology of the Lived, Performed and Screened Body

-The Haunted Body

-Politics of the Body

-Unconventional and Other Bodies

The body, its presence, perceptions and experience, are becoming increasingly underpinned and influenced by the digital age. JAM 2013 will endeavour to open a dialogue about the relationship between the body and digital in contemporary scholarship and practice, posing many questions including: How does the body encounter digital media and how do digital media frames position the body – both in mainstream iterations, social media contexts and in art/installation/performance contexts? Furthermore, it will also be worth considering how digital technology has affected the way that humans approach unfamiliar body movement traditions, beyond regional and national borders?  

JAM 2013 will provide a discussion forum for current and developing research in film, theatre, television and new media. Previous delegates have welcomed this opportunity to gain experience of presenting their work at different stages of their development, while having the opportunity to meet and form contacts with fellow postgraduate students. Furthermore, participants at JAM 2013 have the possibility of being published in the Journal of Media Practice.

Non-Presenting delegates are also very welcome to attend this conference.

Continuing from the success of last year’s JAM 2012 Conference: Time Tells, which experimented with conference structure to include live performances, film screenings and installations taking place throughout the day, we invite artists working in various mediums to propose presentations of their work, relevant to the conference theme.

Please send a 250-word outline describing the piece you are proposing to present, as well as duration and any specific technical/space requirements, and a 50-word biographical note. Academic communication is changing. Traditional dissemination methods are being supplemented by digital technologies that academics can use to share their research with each other and external stakeholders and thereby help their work to create impact. But what are the real benefits of using social media to share academic work? How does this openness lead to greater impact? And what are the potential problems with this form of short, immediate and frequent communication? This session draws on the findings of a three-year research project examining the ways that academic work can be better communicated in order to maximise its impact.

 

Is University Scholarship becoming more Open? Or just more Digital?

The developing digital context for scholarship in the University brings pressures and opportunities for change in both the established practices of scholarly communication and conventional ideas about who participates in it. But how far is digital practice amongst university academics really open to the engagement of non-professional scholars, and what are the implications of internet knowledge cultures for the processes and ethics of academic scholarship?  In this talk I will use examples of work in the field of Digital Scholarship that is currently going on at The Open University (see http://www8.open.ac.uk/iet/main/research-scholarship/our-research-scholarship-programmes/digital-scholarship) to explore these questions, and to work towards a concept of scholarship in the digital university that is committed to both the democratisation of the academy and the furtherance of academic approaches to knowledge and learning.   

 

Open Educational Resources: salvation or subjectification?

This presentation will critique the implementation of Open Educational Resources in higher education.  Open access has emerged as a prominent debate in the field of distance and digitally-mediated learning, in which technology is advanced as both the vehicle for widening participation and the solution to the perceived elitism of the traditional institution. OER have been in the forefront of this dialogue with claims of social transformation and global deliverance from poverty; however they remain significantly under-theorised.  While OER literature often emphasises the removal of barriers to information, it fails to adequately address the consequences of open access in terms of education itself, tending to make assumptions about the capacity for individuals to act purely in an autonomous fashion as ‘self-directed’ learners.  This paper will therefore problematise the ways in which the OER movement implies particular notions of freedom and independence in the advancement of their educational agenda.

THE ZIZEK AND MEDIA STUDIES READER

CALL FOR PAPERS

Since the early 1970s, film, media, and cultural theorists have appealed to Lacanian psychoanalytic theory in order to discern processes of subjectivization, representation, and ideological interpellation.  In much of the early approaches to Lacanian theory in these fields, concepts such as the ‘mirror stage’, the Imaginary, the Symbolic, and the ‘gaze’ figured heavily.  However, beginning with the work of theorists such as Jacqueline Rose, Joan Copjec and Slavoj Žižek, a new approach to Lacan has been advanced, one which pays closer attention to concepts such as sexual difference, the objet petit a (the object-cause of desire), fantasy, the Real, enjoyment, and the drive.  Žižek in particular has advanced a political-philosophical re-interpretation of Lacan that has spawned a whole new wave of Žižekian film, media, and cultural theory that shows a marked difference from an early Lacanian approach.  They differ insofar as a Žižekian approach demonstrates connections between the media, ideology, the objet petit a, the Real, the drive, and enjoyment.

We are seeking papers to be included in an edited collection titled, The Žižek and Media Studies Reader.  Papers should discuss Žižek’s relevance for and connection to one of the following areas of media studies:  film/cinema; popular culture; and, new/digital media.  Suggested topics include:

·      A Žižekian reading of a particular film/popular culture artefact

·      Ideology critique

·      Media politics

·      Subjectivity/Identity studies

·      Media in the context of the ‘demise of symbolic efficiency’

·      Communicative capitalism

·      The relationship between media and desire/drive

·      Media and fantasy

·      Media and enjoyment

Please submit abstracts between 250-500 words and a short biographical statement by September 15th, 2012 to either

The 5th International Conference and Festival on Global Cult Film Traditions Presents:

Cine-Excess V: Subverting the Senses: The Politics and Aesthetics of Excess

The Cine-Excess Cult Film Conference and Festival brings together leading international scholars and critics with global cult filmmakers. Cine-Excess comprises of a 3 day conference alongside plenary talks, filmmaker interviews and 5-7 UK theatrical premieres of up and coming cult releases.  The event also features its own dedicated DVD label, with recent releases including the official UK Blu-ray release of Dario Argento’s Suspiria (1977).  A new director’s cut of Cannibal Holocaust (1979) is currently being completed in conjunction with Shameless Films for release in Summer 2011.

Previous guests of honour to the annual Cine-Excess event have included John Landis (An American Werewolf in London, The Blues Brothers, Trading Places), Roger Corman (The Masque of the Red Death, The Little Shop of Horrors, The Intruder, The Wild Angels, Bloody Mama), Stuart Gordon (Re-Animator, King of the Ants, Stuck) and Brian Yuzna (Society, Beyond Re-Animator, The Dentist), Dario Argento (Deep Red, Suspiria, Inferno) and Joe Dante (The Howling, Gremlins, The Hole.) Our keynotes have included Sir Christopher Frayling (Head of the Arts Council), Professor Mark Jancovich (University of East Anglia), Professor Martin Barker (University of Wales, Aberystwyth), Matt Hills (University of Cardiff), Professor Jeffrey Sconce (Northwestern University), Professor Chris Jenks (Brunel University) and Professor Richard Dyer (Kings College, London.)

Papers from Cine-Excess III are currently being developed into the book Screening the Undead to be published by I.B. Tauris.  A Cine-Excess Journal is also under development and will publish further papers from the forthcoming conference.

Cine-Excess V focuses on the theme of the controversial cult image in its political, historical and aesthetic contexts. With the resurgence of critical interest in the 1980s ‘video nasties’, as well as whole new generation of films being subject to official state control, the cult image is now becoming a crucial index between the censor and the censored. In order to investigate this further, Cine-Excess V will consider global case-studies of the controversial cult image, looking at both their political and aesthetic particularities. The event will consider the cult image in a broad remit, focusing on a range of cult media and technologies, including film, television, games, comics, and digital media. Proposals are welcomed on, but not limited to, the following topics and areas:
