The CICE is an international refereed conference dedicated to the advancement of the theory and practices in education. The CICE promotes collaborative excellence between academicians and professionals from Education.

The aim of CICE is to provide an opportunity for academicians and professionals from various educational fields with cross-disciplinary interests to bridge the knowledge gap, promote research esteem and the evolution of pedagogy. The CICE 2014 invites research papers that encompass conceptual analysis, design implementation and performance evaluation. All the accepted papers will appear in the proceedings and modified version of selected papers will be published in special issues peer reviewed journals.

The School of Education and Lifelong Learning kindly invites you to participate in the International Conference: A Child’s World – Next Steps, taking place on 25-27 June 2014 at the Penglais Campus of Aberystwyth University, Wales, UK.

‘A Child’s World – Next Steps’ Conference has been devised to build on the success of the 2012 conference ‘A Child’s World: Working Together for a Better Future’, focusing on new concepts in Raising Standards, Curriculum Development and Safeguarding Children, with the aim of enabling collaboration, creating effective policy and sharing best practice in childhood studies within an international strategic dimension.

Focused primarily at an educational research and professional audience, the findings will be relevant across a range of disciplines, including governmental policy formulation, social care, and operational delivery of public services. The wide ranging scope of the conference will be highly applicable for international, national, regional and local government, along with education professionals and will be of direct interest to the general public.

It is intended that selected papers will be published in an edited book, providing the opportunity to identify and share best practice amongst subject professionals.

The School of Education and Lifelong Learning welcomes and invites submission of abstracts for presentation and dissemination at the conference on the following themes:

HIGHER EDUCATION AS IF THE WORLD MATTERED

A conference to be held on 25 and 26 April 2013 organised by: The Higher Education Research Group (Institute for Education, Community and Society, The University of Edinburgh) in partnership with The Society for Research into Higher Education (SRHE)

CALL FOR PAPERS

While higher education is known to enhance people’s life chances, questions remain to be asked about how the goods to be gained from higher education are presently distributed. Despite policies that are meant to increase access to higher education for under-represented sections of society we know that in a highly stratified society and higher education system even widened entry does not guarantee greater social justice in relation to access, for example. Against this backdrop, broad questions that the symposium will address include: To what extent and how do higher education policies and practices make a difference to this world? What are present priorities and how could things be otherwise? To what extent does higher education address community and environmental concerns? To what extent are participants encouraged to make a contribution to the world?

This conference, and a book that will be associated with it, therefore, seek to explore social justice in and through higher education by examining recent policies and practices in relation to six broad strands of higher education: Research and knowledge mobilisation; Curriculum; Pedagogy; Access and participation; Institutional leadership; Quality and educational development. Contributions in each section seek to analyse the assumptions underpinning policy and practice, arrive at judgements about the extent to which the world is seen to matter and offer suggestions on how things could be different from how they are. Running across these six strands are concerns related to internationalisation, funding, and lifelong learning.

Author submissions

All submissions are subject to a blind peer review process. Proposals are invited for Individual Papers. Each paper accepted for individual presentation will be allocated a minimum of 30 minutes for presentation and discussion.

Timetable for submissions

All proposals must be submitted via email to fsmit@srhe.ac.uk . The deadline for submission is 1 March 2013.

Call for Papers- Format for submissions

To maintain the high quality of papers presented at the conference, and ensure that the review process has access to a sufficient level of detail on paper proposals to take an informed view, submitting authors are asked to provide a short paper for peer review in two parts.

Please note that both parts will be required at the point of first submission, but there will be no subsequent call for fuller papers for accepted abstracts.

• Part 1 Abstract: a 150 word summary of the proposal which will be printed in the published conference programme and also made available at conference on the CD Rom.
• Part 2 Outline: a maximum 1000 word paper (not including references)

Conference Venue
The symposium will take place at Paterson’s Land, Moray House School of Education, Holyrood Road, The University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, EH8 8AQ. All rooms are equipped with a screen and laptop.

The School of Education is located in the picturesque OldTown area (off the Royal Mile, or Canongate). It is a 10 minute walk (or three minute taxi ride) from Edinburgh Waverley train station to the School of Education. The City of Edinburgh is easily reachable by train and most airlines (Easyjet and Ryanair offer low-budget flights from several cities in England). Travel from Edinburgh Airport to the City Centre (final stop at Waverly Bridge, right opposite Waverley Station) by Airlink bus service takes approximately 30 minutes (and a single journey costs £3.50) and by taxi the cost is between £18 and £20.

The City of Edinburgh offers many attractions for conference participants considering spending the weekend. It also features a wide range of cafés, bistros and restaurants and a good number of reasonably priced hotels close to the conference venue (e.g., IBIS at Grassmarket, The Jurys Inn on Jeffrey Street, The Travel Lodge on St Mary’s Street, and the highly praised Salisbury Green Hotel, situated on the University’s own premises at Pollock Halls).

Conference Fees and Booking

Fees are £150 (£130 for SRHE members) and include all refreshments during the day on both days (excluding dinner) and the conference programme. Any overnight accommodation is to be organised and paid directly by delegates. Sorry, there are no single day fees.

THE EUROPEAN CURRICULUM: RESTRUCTURING AND RENEWAL

The European Educational Research Journal (www.wwwords.co.uk/EERJ) would like to produce a special issue on the processes of curriculum reform in European education systems in 2012.

The EERJ works within the idea that European education exists today within a borderless space containing significant flows of ideas, policies and academics, between countries, in networks and associations, and in projects. From the beginning, it has encouraged research across European borders and across the field of educational studies: it has published symposia and network papers in a range of fields on European education policy, market reforms, travelling policies, public education, social capital, the technology of numbers, mobility, didactics and social justice.

This Call for Papers is focused on current processes and programmes of curriculum reform as a key problematic in understanding knowledge formation and education policy steering inEurope. Indeed, the dominance of the knowledge economy paradigm as an organising policy principle for education has accentuated research attention to comparisons of performance, policy learning, and technologies of governance like the Bologna Process and OECD PISA. However, curricula and their associated pedagogic practices remain under-researched as elements in the shaping and governing of a European education policy space.

After a long dominance of national reform efforts and decentralised decision power, Europeanisation and cross-national comparisons are becoming more central in the national educational policy agenda. New qualifications frameworks acrossEuropedraw attention, not only to quality processes, but to common interests in curriculum and evaluation. From kindergarten to higher education, policymakers and practitioners discuss what knowledge is of most worth, how to think about the curriculum, and how it should be evaluated and assessed to facilitate new ways of learning. The formation of knowledge is the core of this activity, and concentrates attention on schooling and new flexible learning pedagogies.

Questions for the Call include:
– Are national education futures still produced within curriculum texts and discourses?
– Are there convergences in curriculum thinking and theory across time and space?
– Do key agencies and actors share common ideas and mores in deciding upon the ‘what, ‘how’ and ‘why’ of teaching?
– How is knowledge transferred and translated between the global and the local arena?
– Are European wide standards being created in curriculum and instruction?
– Is curriculum still a viable idea?

In a time of governing by performance and comparison, can European curriculum and knowledge formation manage its contradictions and still produce identity, meaning and culture?

Submission
The EERJ reviews submitted papers on the basis of the quality of their argument, the contemporary nature of their work, and the level of ‘speaking’ from the local to the European in which they are engaged. All the manuscripts will be peer-reviewed. All contributors should follow the journal’s guidelines provided at www.wwwords.co.uk/eerj/howtocontribute.asp There is no limit on manuscript length but they will normally be 6000-7000 words.

The deadline for submission is January 31, 2012

BRITAIN’S AUSTERITY BUDGET: A CLASS ACT

Following the inconclusive outcome of the British general election on May 6th, the ‘centrist’ Liberal Democratic Party decided to turn sharply to the right by agreeing to join the Tories in a coalition government. In the run-up to the election, the Tories had argued strongly that Britain faced the prospect of a fiscal crisis unless the government’s deficit was brought down further and faster than the outgoing Labour government intended.

The new government quickly cranked up the volume over the deficit, with fresh scare stories about the risk of contagion from the Greek sovereign debt crisis and the subsequent disarray across the Eurozone. Although Labour and the left at once warned of the danger that sharp cuts would risk a new recession, the coalition insisted on pursuing their austerity agenda – and none more so than the Lib Dem ministers, who before the election had sided firmly with Labour on the issue.

SOCIAL PLANNING TORONTO REPORT – A RECOVERY-FREE ZONE: THE UNYIELDING IMPACT OF THE ECONOMIC DOWNTURN ON NONPROFIT COMMUNITY SOCIAL SERVICES IN ONTARIO

Community service organizations across Ontario report an unyielding dilemma, driven by the economic recession: how to meet increasing demand for services with falling revenues from funding sources.

A Recovery-Free Zone, a survey of 311 non-profit community service agencies across Ontario, released today by the Social Planning Network of Ontario follows up one year later on a similar survey conducted in 2009. It shows that service demand continues to rise with 68% of respondents seeing a greater demand in April 2010 than prior to September 2008. Almost 80% of respondents attribute this increase in demand as primarily or in part due to economic conditions.

BUSINESS UNIONISM VS. WORKPLACE DEMOCRACY

Are unions an ally or an obstacle in the struggle to democratise work? It seems an odd question at first. There are many, many unionists who support the workplace democracy agenda. In fact the New Unionism Network is made up of them; it’s one of our 4 key principles. But take a read of this article by Wanda Pasz and have a think about her real target: business unionism. This is a model in which unions seek membership simply and solely to bargain for them over wages and conditions. Deliberately or not, these unions impose a strict limit on their members’ agenda. Studies have shown again and again that workers want more, particularly in the connected areas of voice and influence. Business unionism sets these aspirations aside. I’m sure many of us will share Ms Pasz’s view of what unions should be, even if we disagree with her assessment of what they currently are.
