THE METROPOLITAN FACTORY: MAKING A LIVING AS A CREATIVE WORKER – A WORKERS’ INQUIRY

Minor Compositions is launching a workers’ inquiry into the shaping of creative, cultural, and artistic labor in the metropolis.

Surviving as a cultural or artistic worker in the city has never been easy. Creative workers find themselves celebrated as engines of economic growth, economic recovery and urban revitalization even as the conditions for our continued survival become more precarious. How can you make a living today in such a situation? That is, how to hold together the demands of paying the rent and bills while managing all the tasks necessary to support one’s practice? How to manage the tensions between creating spaces for creativity and imagination while working through the constraints posed by economic conditions?

In a more traditional workplace it is generally easy to distinguish between those who planned and managed the labor process and those who were involved in its executions: between the managers and the managed. For creative workers these distinctions become increasingly hard to make. Today the passionate and self-motivated labor of the artisan increasingly becomes the model for a self-disciplining, self-managed labor force that works harder, longer, and often for less pay precisely because of its attachment to some degree of personal fulfilment in forms of engaging work. And that ain’t no way to make a living, having to struggle three times as hard for just to have a sense of engagement in meaningful work.

This project sets out to investigate how cultural workers in the metropolis manage these competing tensions and demands. The goal is to bring together the dispersed knowledges and experiences of creative workers finding ways to make a living in the modern metropolis. And by doing that to create a space to learn from this common experiences that often are not experienced as such while we work away in different parts of the city.

ARTS AGAINST CUTS

ARTS AGAINST CUTS // DIRECT WEEKEND THIS SATURDAY AND SUNDAY [Jan 15th and 16th]

Camberwell College of Art, Wilson Road Building (off Peckham Rd)

Following on from the fantastic Long Weekend at Goldsmiths in December, the Turner Prize and National Gallery teach-ins, the Book Block and the many occupations and actions that emerged from that weekend, this Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th Arts Against Cuts are organising another weekend of action, planning, imagining, working and thinking together.

The schedule below has been drawn from the great list of proposals sent in. There will be lots of free space for anyone who wished to put forward ideas on the days, organised spontaneity.  Schedule may shift around a bit.

Arts Against Cuts was initiated across London Art Schools last Autumn.

 
We want to reclaim the public, critical space that universities and art schools should be, transforming those buildings into art schools for the future, bringing together art students, artists, cultural workers and those fighting the cuts from across the UK to share in defiance against the relentless marketization of our education and our lives. We will share knowledge and skills; we will collaborate across disciplines, ages and backgrounds; we will turn our imagination and desires into tools of disobedience. We will make sure that all the knowledge, ideas, tools and projects which emerge from the event will be disseminated and put into action in streets and public spaces across the country and be shared by all those in the anti-cuts movements. The Direct Weekend will be a feast of non stop workshops and presentations, slide shows and films, how-to sessions and skill shares, and a free space for spontaneous creation of events, actions and expressions. Its not important what art is but what it does, and right now it has the potential to turn the crisis of cuts into an opportunity for change.

Studies in Transversality is a series of encounters between researchers, cultural workers, and organisers who are concerned with the contexts and consequences of their practices beyond their respective fields of specialisation, and who wish to open new lines of subjectivation.  This session is the first of the year and brings together the practices of Colectivo Situaciones (Argentina), and a number of groups who are researching and organising around questions of creative labour, knowledge production and contemporary social movements in the UK and Europe today. Working through the notion of militant research, the session aims to examine the separations between university based academic research, cultural workers, and activists, the reason why these separations exist, and to share the working  methods of these groups.

About Militant Research
Militant research is a concept-tool that works on the premise that all interpretation of the world is linked to some kind of action. Related to practices of co-research and institutional analysis, militant research proposes that all new knowledge production affects and modifies the bodies and subjectivities of those who have participated. Rather than use research as a tool to categorise and separate knowledge from practice, militant research operates transversally, becoming part of the process that organises relationships between bodies, knowledge, social practices and fields of action.

Colectivo Situaciones is a collective based in Buenos Aires. Emerging from Argentina’s radical student milieu in the mid 1990s, they have developed a long track record of intervention in Argentine social movements, including work with the unemployed workers’ movement of Solano, HIJOS, the organization of the children of the disappeared during the dictatorship and Creciendo Juntos, an alternative school run by militant teachers. Their books and pamphlets are dialogues with social movements, activists and many other groups, and explore the question of power, tactics of struggle, and how to think about revolution today. In addition to their publishing work, they are also working in a collectively run, alternative school. In a note printed on the back of many of their books, they describe their work as follows: 

…we intend to offer an internal reading of struggles, a phenomenology and a genealogy, not an “objective” description. It is only in this way that thought assumes a creative, affirmative function, and stops being a mere reproduction of the present. And only in this fidelity with the immanence of thought is it a real, dynamic contribution.

About Micropolitics Research Group
The Micropolitics Research Group investigates the forces and procedures that entangle artistic production and the flexible subjectivities of its producers into the fabric of late capitalism. Based primarily in London, the group carries out analysis of issues ranging from the production of subjectivity in creative work, diplomacy, institutional analysis, radical pedagogy and concrete situations of free labour, ‘carrot work’, and creative industry.
