HISTORY OF YOUTH AND COMMUNITY WORK STUDY CONFERENCE

13 – 15 March 2015

We are delighted to announce that the seventh History of Youth and Community Work Study Conference will be taking place at Hinsley Hall, Leeds in March 2015.

As with the earlier gatherings, it will include a mix of plenary sessions, workshops and ‘surprise’ events. Amongst the plenary speakers will be Michael Snape from Birmingham University, a well-known historian of Christianity and war in the modern world. His talk is titled ‘Barclay Baron: A settlement worker goes to war’. A second plenary speaker will be Carol Dyhouse from the University of Sussex, a social historian and much published author, who will be talking on ‘Girl Trouble: Panic in the History of Young Women’. The speakers for the third plenary will be Sarah Banks and Andrea Armstrong from Durham University. Their presentation will review the lessons and legacies of the Community Development Projects of the 1970s. Symposiums are also planned on the history of Community and Youth Work Education and Training and on the Historical Development of Youth Work Curricula.

The breadth of workshops is always impressive covering an enormous range of topics linked to the history of youth work, adult education and community work. As before some of these will focus on the historical development of practice in countries outside the UK.

We hope that this conference will be once again a relaxed gathering of enthusiasts keen to talk to and learn from each other.

THE MINERS’ WIVES: WINNING THE COMMUNITY

The Marx Memorial Library & Workers School is holding the third of its four classes marking the 30th anniversary of the miners’ strike on TUESDAY 2nd DECEMBER starting at 6.30pm held at the MML, 37a Clerkenwell Green, London, EC1R 0DU.

Joyce Sheppard, who was active in the movement of miners’ wives throughout the miners’ strike of 1984-85 in Doncaster, will lead an educational discussion on how the community was organised during the strike.

We look forward to seeing you there.

STIR: Co-ops. Community. Commons.

STIR started as an online magazine and has now launched as a quarterly print magazine that features articles and interviews on the international co-operative movement, the emergence of the commons and collaborative networks, and other community-orientated alternatives in technology, agriculture, food, sports, energy, education and other important aspects of our lives.

We have opened our subscription service with GoCardless for the print edition and it’s £16 for four issues including P&P, and you can subscribe by clicking here.

We are a reader-supported magazine (with no external funding) so please consider supporting our magazine with an annual subscription.

In 2012 we published a crowdfunded book of alternatives, raising over £5000 from 135 crowdfunders.  STIR Vol.1 involved over 160 people who edited, designed, authored, illustrated and funded the collection of articles and interviews.

The recent referendum in Scotland provided evidence and a reminder to those of us interested in communities, social change and knowledge of the depth of the creative knowledge generating capacities of people when they are able to focus on issues that touch their lives. Community activists, scholars, artists, politicians, small and large business folks, musicians, comedians, football players were really engaged in a remarkable series of activities that brought out what the people of Scotland care about.

This grassroots depth of knowledge creation and creativity is the transformative energy that has inspired researchers, higher education and community education practitioners and community organizations to think more about research paradigms that recognize the potential of co-creating knowledge, of the role of knowledge in social movements and the need for changes in our political and educational institutions to enlarge spaces for debating new futures.

National and international networks have arisen over the past few years in support of change, but what does it really mean?

How do we find new ways to collaborate to support the really big changes that our communities, our countries and our tired planet longs for?

This discussion will look at new forms of community university partnerships.

The University of Nebraska at Omaha hosted the first PTO conference in 1995. In recognition of our twenty years of community engagement, UNO is welcoming PTO back as the first event to be held in the new Community Engagement Center. UNO will be one of the few civically engaged universities to have a dedicated facility for community engagement. We are excited and honored to be the inaugural event for this venue and look forward to seeing you all there!

REVIEW, REFLECT, REIMAGINE:
Where have we been?
Where are we?
Where are we going?
(And HOW?)

WE are change-makers, educators, global activists, local leaders, artists, organizers, advocates, rabble-rousers, hair-raisers, instigators. WE are working in performance, literature, education, politics, advocacy, organizing, social work, healthcare, communities. WE are people who have come a long way and have a long way to go, coming together to review, reflect and reimagine.

 

The 20th Annual PTO Conference is:

A celebration of what we have done, a look at where we are, and a challenge to move forward.

An opportunity to gather with experienced artists, activists, teachers and friends, and a challenge to expand our efforts and our community.

An opportunity to share our experience, and a challenge to develop new ways of dismantling systems of oppression and promoting critical thinking and social justice through liberatory theatre and popular education.

For twenty years Pedagogy and Theatre of the Oppressed conferences have been a place to gather, dialogue, explore, express, share, learn, teach, develop and build community. In this exciting moment the history and significance of our work in education, in theatre, in combating local and global oppression, in political struggle, in social justice, in community organizing, in scholarship, in performance certainly deserves critical review and celebration.

But even more, we need to know HOW to move forward—how to modify, extend, and apply theory and practice of Pedagogy of the Oppressed and Theatre of the Oppressed to challenge both old and ever-changing forms of oppression, and how to transform dehumanizing systems into those that move toward social and economic freedom and justice.

We are asking you to consider these questions and shape these important dialogues by submitting proposals, papers, discussions, performances, workshops, debates, you name it, for presentation at the conference. Share your techniques, report on your projects, explore ideas for the future, seek assistance in meeting challenges, get constructive critique of your efforts, and raise new questions about the where’s and how’s of the struggle against oppression through theatre and education.

Come to the Conference in Omaha—yes, back in Omaha where this all started twenty years ago!—and engage in the celebrations and struggles, through practical workshops, physical explorations, learning opportunities, keynote presentations, performances, and countless discussions of our most pressing questions.

The power to transform the world lies with us—let’s multiply that power when we gather together for the 20th Annual PTO Conference!

Call for Papers: ‘Recognition, Conflict and the Problem of Global Ethical Community’
Global Discourse: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Current Affairs and Applied Contemporary Thought
Volume 4: Issue 2: June 2014

Recognition refers to those sociological processes whereby two or more entities (such as states), groups (such as ethnic or cultural communities) or individuals interact with one another and come to understand themselves, and the other, as mutually free individuals: as social agents whose identities, interests and outlooks are equally bound together. Without the foundational act of recognition, relations can become unequal and antagonistic, leading to social pathologies, denigration and even open conflict.

Recognition processes are manifested at every level of political life. States are acutely aware of the importance of their recognition as sovereign entities by others in the international community and what the absence of such recognition can mean for their own legitimacy and security. Similarly, recognition processes are also central to the level of cosmopolitan social-relations in world politics, that is, at the level of groups and individuals across different states and communities. One can think here of the recognition acts performed by Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) to the more ‘everyday’ acts of recognition in trade, commerce, travel and migration. One can also think of the negative corollaries of misrecognition or denigration in IR by which genocides and mass atrocities are typically committed.

Recognition then, plays a foundational role in International Relations because it is only through recognition that states establish their sovereign legitimacy in international society, and, it is only through recognition in interpersonal interactions at the cosmopolitan level that humans can begin to interact with distant others amicably. Yet, despite the centrality of recognition in world politics, we know very little about how recognition processes operate in the sphere of world politics. This issue of Global Discourse will examine the implications of recognition theory in helping to understand the problem of conflict and the possibilities for forging a form of global ethical community. Bringing together leading international scholars of recognition theory in world politics and containing two review symposia on recently published monographs on the topic, the issue will discuss the potential for recognition to pacify relations between states, groups and individuals and to develop recognition processes in the global community.

Generally, submissions can be based around the following:

–  processes and politics of recognition in world politics

–  state forms of recognition, non-recognition and misrecognition

–  linkages between conflict (local, national and interstate), violence, security and recognition

–  linkages between peacebuilding, reconciliation and recognition

–  forms of recognition above and between states in world politics

–  the relation between recognition and international solidarity and the expansion of rights

Building upon previous symposia with the likes of Noam Chomsky, Andrew Linklater, Guy Standing, David Graeber and Michael Shapiro, the issue will contain a review symposium with Erik Ringmar and Thomas Lindemann, who will respond to reviews of their The Struggle for Recognition in International Relations.

Journal Aims and Scope
Global Discourse is an interdisciplinary, problem-oriented journal of applied contemporary thought operating at the intersection of politics, international relations, sociology and social policy. The journal’s scope is broad, encouraging interrogation of current affairs with regard to core questions of distributive justice, wellbeing, cultural diversity, autonomy, sovereignty, security and recognition. Rejecting the notion that publication is the final stage in the research process, Global Discourse seeks to foster discussion and debate between often artificially isolated disciplines and paradigms, with responses to articles encouraged and conversations continued across issues. The journal features a mix of full-length articles, each accompanied by one or more replies, shorter essays, rapid replies, discussion pieces and book review symposia, typically consisting of three reviews and a reply by the author/s. With an international advisory editorial board consisting of experienced, highly-cited academics, Global Discourse welcomes submissions from and on any region. Authors are encouraged to explore the international dimensions and implications of their work. With a mix of themed and general issues, symposia are periodically deployed to examine topics as they emerge.

Fifty years ago, in June 1962, dozens of activists belonging to Students
for a Democratic Society (SDS) met in Port Huron, Michigan, to draft a
manifesto for a new era of protest. The document they produced, ‘The Port Huron Statement’:   http://www.lsa.umich.edu/phs/resources/porthuronstatementfulltext
grasped the spirit of the Black Freedom Struggle, the peace movement, and the anti-colonial revolution abroad. It presented a radical vision of social justice and what democracy in action could mean—and it spread the word about an awakening New Left that would soon shake the world.

“A New Insurgency: *The Port Huron Statement *in Its Time and Ours”
features leading activists and distinguished scholars. They will examine
the local, national, and global scene of social struggles, 1958-1965, and
compare the movements of those times with the “new insurgency” of the past few years—from the Arab Spring to Occupy Wall Street, the “indignados” and anti-austerity rallies of Europe, and mass student campaigns for educational equality from Chile to Quebec.

“A New Insurgency” has been organized by University of Michigan faculty,
students, and staff and supported by contributions from a wide range of
campus departments, institutes, and administration offices. Please fill out

Report from the Ontario Nurses’ Association (ONA) – Easy to Take for Granted

The role of the public sector & carework in wealth creation

As the province continues down the road of decreased public spending in health care and other public services through initiatives such as imposed wage freezes, forced pension erosion as well as sweeping labour law reform, the Ontario Nurses’ Association (ONA) is releasing a new research paper showing the wealth-creating role of public spending on health, education and social services in overall economic production.

Easy to Take for Granted: The role of the public sector and carework in wealth creation shows that the value of economic output generated through every dollar spent on public health care, education and social services is considerably higher than each private investment dollar.

CSSHE 2013 Conference – Call for Submissions

The Canadian Society for the Study of Higher Education (CSSHE) will hold its annual conference June 3-5, 2013 within the Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences, hosted by the University of Victoria in Victoria, Beautiful British Columbia.

This conference is being planned in close collaboration with the Canadian Association for the Study of Adult Education (CASAE) and the Canadian Society for the Study of Education (CSSE) so that individuals attending one of these three conferences will also have the opportunity to attend sessions
at one or both of the other gatherings.

The Congress 2013 theme is “@the Edge.” CSSHE invites submissions that explore the overall theme or aspects of it as applied to the field of higher education. Papers addressing specific-but-related topics such as online learning, governance, research, informal and experiential learning, recruitment and student services will also be considered for inclusion in the program.

The study looks at trends in tuition and compulsory fees in Canada since 1990, projects fees for each province for the next four years, and examines the impact on affordability for median- and low-income families using a Cost of Learning Index.

Since 1990, with very few exceptions, the tuition fee burden across the country has been increasing faster than incomes, and the average tuition and compulsory fees for Canadian undergraduate students will continue to rise by an estimated 17.7% by 2015-2016.

Walmart Warehouse Strikers Return to Work with Full Back Pay

Strikers have returned to work with their heads held high and their wallets full at Walmart’s largest North American distribution center. Warehouse workers in Elwood, Illinois, announced Saturday that they had won their key demand, reinstatement of all who were fired or suspended for on-the-job organizing, along with full back pay for everyone who participated in the three-week strike.

The conference considers what ‘Impact’ means for us, our work, our understandings and future developments. Governments, international agencies, funding bodies and policy-makers increasingly use this term. What does it mean?

The social sciences, creative arts, education and humanities are currently under attack on a global scale as funding is concentrated on STEM related subjects; but the threatened fields of scholarship are themselves evolving new ways of thinking and practice and new sites and methods of enquiry.

Practitioners and academics in the threatened areas are responding to the situation with vitality and determination: experimental, adventurous, playful, but serious in redefining boundaries and finding new ways forward. DPR 12 maps these emerging knowledge regimes, their impacts, the imagined futures they enable and the implications for practice, research, learning and teaching.

DPR and PCA have joined forces for this conference. DPR is deeply engaged in the critical interrogation of contemporary culture as it plays out in the academy in research, learning and teaching. Similarly, PCA is working with energy and passion to implement a vision of high quality education for life in contemporary arts practice. Bringing the two together is an adventure in creative synergy.

The conference explores the potential impact on each other of the creative arts and social sciences in terms of theory and practice.

Jane Wills (QMUL, London)

Jane Wills has research interests in low paid employment, migration, trade unionism and new forms of labour organisation, the living wage, community organising and political-economy. Her new co-authored book on low paid migrant labour in London entitled Global Cities at Work: new migrant divisions of labour was published by Pluto in 2010. Jane is convenor of the MA Community Organising and an active member of London Citizens.

BUILDING SOLIDARITY: CAMPUS LABOUR STRUGGLES AND THE STUDENT CONNECTION

A forum to discuss and unite worker and student struggles at U of T

A brief overview of the working conditions at the University of Toronto shows that something is just not right: most contract faculty members have virtually no job security; largely racialized food-service workers are paid less than a living wage; post-doctoral fellows have zero input in the drafting of their contracts; female administrative staff members receive less pay than their male counterparts; and non-tenured professors fear termination for voicing opinions on contentious political issues.

Meanwhile, students at the U of T are also engaged in pitched battles to keep post-secondary education accessible and equitable. Campaigns to eliminate ever-increasing tuition fees, to defend equity-based programs under threat of extinction, to challenge autocratic room booking policies, and to overturn unrepresentative and unaccountable governing bodies are just some of the issues that they organize around everyday.

In short, there is a whole host of injustices that plague both workers and students on this campus. As a working group of the newly-formed University of Toronto General Assembly, Student-Worker Solidarity (SWS) seeks to challenge this state of affairs by bringing different campus workers together to speak with students about their issues, while also providing students with an opportunity to relay their concerns to workers.

With this forum, SWS hopes to begin the conversation in order to create new ways of thinking about and participating in the struggles of those who make our University what it is.

UFCW CANADA RELEASE: WORKERS’ ACTION CENTRE LAUNCHES PROVINCIAL INITIATIVE – “UNDERCOVER STORIES ON WAGE THEFT”

Wage theft, in its various incarnations, is a workplace plague in Canada which is evident in a variety of communities. It is a particularly painful in immigrant communities. Many employers continuously abuse Employment Standards protections of these precarious workers as a means to simple but effectively improve profits.

TEACHING ABOUT LABOR ISSUES AND THE WISCONSIN WORKER FIGHTBACK

According to labor historian Mark J. Naison, the movement of workers that began in Wisconsin and is now spreading to other states is “the most important labor struggle in the United States in the 21st century.”

The current uprising of workers in Wisconsin and other states presents a powerful opportunity to teach students about what the protests are about and why their teachers and neighbors are joining the struggle.  It’s an opportunity to critically examine issues, and to model for students’ responsible civic action and engagement in the political process.

As members of teacher unions, we have an additional responsibility, summarized by the late Howard Zinn in an interview published in Transforming Teacher Unions:

“If teacher unions want to be strong and well-supported, it’s essential that they not only be teacher unionists but teachers of unionism. We need to create a generation of students who support teachers and the movements of teachers for their rights.”

MAYTREE FOUNDATION – THE “PILOT” FOR RECRUITING TEMPORARY FOREIGN WORKERS FOR LOW-SKILLED JOBS SHOULD BE ABOLISHED
