Just to remind you that Forest Roots is next friday and not tonight when we have world renowned guitarist Hugh Burns. He will be ably accompanied by percussionist Roy Dodds. We also have a few tunes from the Oscar Pavel Trio and a new up and coming father and son duo as well as The Flats Family Band, surprise guests and local performers. Also we have been very efficient and finally got it together to book acts for the rest of the year!

Luke White (Middlesex University): ‘Damien Hirst: The Capitalist Sublime?’

Damien Hirst is perhaps the absolute epitome of the capitalist artist. He is also a figure – in the bare objective terms of his economic and institutional success – who demands close attention as a cultural phenomenon: not, perhaps, an exemplary artist for our era, but certainly a deeply symptomatic and significant one. He is also a cultural producer who, whatever we may feel about his ethos, at his rare best has provided us with some of the art world’s most memorable, iconic images of recent decades. 

To better understand the Hirst phenomenon, this paper makes an analysis of his place within a long line of cultural producers who have been involved with the commercialised and commodified instantiations of art oriented to the sublime, a lineage stretching back to the modern (re-)discovery of this aesthetic in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. It proposes that the sublime has been an aesthetic profoundly implicated in the rise of capital, and is intimately intertwined, in particular, with the highly liquid, ‘imperialist’ forms if this that characterise both the contemporary Neoliberal scene (of which Hirst might be imagined to be the court painter) and that of the eighteenth century alike. This paper seeks to define a Hirstean or capitalist sublime in which the fantasies of the modern, capitalist subject and its structuring experiences in the social and economic are reflected, formed and negotiated.

Luke White is Lecturer in Visual Culture and History of Art and Design at Middlesex University. His PhD was entitled ‘Damien Hirst and the Legacy of the Sublime in Contemporary Art and Culture’, and with Claire Pajaczkowska he was the editor of The Sublime Now (Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2009).

Today is my 60^th birthday!

Yes, I am a real person and not just an ‘advertising machine’, as one reader of this blog suggested a few years ago.

I have been listening to these tunes today and last night, and they have had continued significance for me since I first heard them. I won’t go into it here regarding the ‘whys’ and ‘how comes’ these pieces of music have such significance for me. Perhaps I’ll do that if and when I hit 80!

He plays all styles of 5-string banjo, not just bluegrass but also jazz and Irish. He studied with the renowned American banjo virtuoso, Bela Fleck and he is also a member of the Daily Planet as well as doing lots of sessions for various well known artists. Back when I was in Havering Sixth-Form College, at the age of 17/18, I remember setting this poem by Blake to my own song. Although I haven’t played it since then, the tune always remains within my mind. This is a revisit to that song that I wrote 7/8 years ago now. This might not be exactly as it was then, but the opening tune is the one that stuck with me for all these years.

Dear Forest Roots Folk

Forest Roots is back with a bang and this month we have the hugely talented Bonfire Band http://www.thebonfireband.co.uk ably supported by traditional folk duo Annie Winter and Dean Hobbs. We haven’t seen the Bonfire band for quite a while now and we’re looking forward to hearing more of their folky, bluegrassy, country mix of home grown songs. 

We are also pleased that Annie, who has sung quite a few times at the club and has been warmly appreciated, will be doing a longer spot as a duo with Dean Hobbs. The Flats Family Band will be there as usual so it’s sure to be a good night.

Despite recent crises in the financial system, uprisings in Greece, France, Tunisia, and Bolivia, worldwide decline of faith in neoliberal trade policies, deepening ecological catastrophes, and global deficits of realized democracy, we still live in an era of “spectacular capitalism.” But what is “spectacular capitalism?” Spectacular capitalism is the dominant mythology of capitalism that disguises its internal logic and denies the macroeconomic reality of the actually existing capitalist world. Taking on this elusive mythology, and those who too easily accept it, Richard Gilman-Opalsky exposes the manipulative and self-serving narrative of spectacular capitalism.

Drawing on the work of Guy Debord, Gilman-Opalsky argues that the theory of practice and practice of theory are superseded by upheavals that do the work of philosophy. One could ask: Who better raises questions about public and private spheres of influence and control, Jürgen Habermas or the water war activists who made a rebellion in Cochabamba, Bolivia in the spring of 2000? Or, has any sociological theorist done better than the Zapatistas to reframe and raise questions about indigenous identity? Spectacular Capitalism makes the case not only for a new philosophy of praxis, but for praxis itself as the delivery mechanism for philosophy – for the field of human action, of contestation and conflict, to raise directly the most irresistible questions about the truth and morality of the existing state of affairs.
