Damien Hirst

DAMIEN HIRST: THE CAPITALIST SUBLIME?

Friday, 1 June, 17.30-19.30
Senate Room, 1st Floor Senate House (Malet Street, London WC1E 7HU)

Luke White (Middlesex University): ‘Damien Hirst: The Capitalist Sublime?’

Damien Hirst is perhaps the absolute epitome of the capitalist artist. He is also a figure – in the bare objective terms of his economic and institutional success – who demands close attention as a cultural phenomenon: not, perhaps, an exemplary artist for our era, but certainly a deeply symptomatic and significant one. He is also a cultural producer who, whatever we may feel about his ethos, at his rare best has provided us with some of the art world’s most memorable, iconic images of recent decades.

To better understand the Hirst phenomenon, this paper makes an analysis of his place within a long line of cultural producers who have been involved with the commercialised and commodified instantiations of art oriented to the sublime, a lineage stretching back to the modern (re-)discovery of this aesthetic in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. It proposes that the sublime has been an aesthetic profoundly implicated in the rise of capital, and is intimately intertwined, in particular, with the highly liquid, ‘imperialist’ forms if this that characterise both the contemporary Neoliberal scene (of which Hirst might be imagined to be the court painter) and that of the eighteenth century alike. This paper seeks to define a Hirstean or capitalist sublime in which the fantasies of the modern, capitalist subject and its structuring experiences in the social and economic are reflected, formed and negotiated.

Luke White is Lecturer in Visual Culture and History of Art and Design at Middlesex University. His PhD was entitled ‘Damien Hirst and the Legacy of the Sublime in Contemporary Art and Culture’, and with Claire Pajaczkowska he was the editor of The Sublime Now (Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2009).

All welcome!

Association of Musical Marxists

ASSOCIATION OF MUSICAL MARXISTS

From the AMM Manifesto:

An ASSOCIATION OF MUSICAL MARXISTS was founded by Andy Wilson and Ben Watson after being subjected to a thirty-minute eternity of Bourdieu-style ‘objective’ sociology of music at a recent Historical Materialism conference.

Sick of being treated like party-spoilers, soppy mystics and ‘undertheorised’ unprofitable scum, the devotees of truth in music have decided to stand up and make themselves heard.

WE are no longer going to sit on our hands and bite our tongues

WE are going to proclaim our proclivities as the cosmo-biologico-social necessity they truly are

WE are no longer prepared to tolerate boring music and lying hacks ‘for the good of the cause’

WE shall embrace great music regardless of genre as the pattern for reshaping humanity and the key to the dialectic …

Dead Man Working

Dead Man Working

DEAD MAN WORKING

NEW TITLE FROM ZerO Books

Dead Man Working

By Carl Cederstrom and Peter Fleming

================

Capitalism has become strange. Ironically, while the ‘age of work’ seems to have come to an end, working has assumed a total presence – a ‘worker’s society’ in the worst sense of the term – where everyone finds themselves obsessed with it. So what does the worker tell us today? ‘I feel drained, empty – dead’; This book tells the story of the dead man working. It follows this figure through the daily tedium of the office, to the humiliating mandatory team building exercise, to awkward encounters with the funky boss who pretends to hate capitalism and tells you to be authentic. In this society, the experience of work is not of dying…but neither of living. It is one of a living death. And yet, the dead man working is nevertheless compelled to wear the exterior signs of life, to throw a pretty smile, feign enthusiasm and make a half-baked joke. When the corporation has colonized life itself, even our dreams, the question of escape becomes ever more pressing, ever more desperate.

================

‘Cederstrom and Fleming, like a present day Virgil, bravely venture into an underworld full of shades whose entire lives have been put to work, who throw themselves heart and soul into the job, and who are constantly implored by management gurus to ‘be themselves,’ ‘feel free,’ and ‘have fun’ in the office. This fascinating and dark little book is an excellent and disturbing introduction to what increasingly large realms of the world of work have become’ – Michael Hardt, Co-author of Empire, Multitude, and Commonwealth.

‘What has work done to us? Cederstrom and Fleming’s brilliant dark and witty book tells us the truth. Working in our sleep? Dressing up as infants? Deprivation tank addiction? Fitness centrers? Suicide? Email? If you didn’t already know what work has made you become then this book might have a devastating effect on your life. Read it!’ – Simon Critchley, Hans Jonas Professor, New School for Social Research.

SIXTY

Today is my 60th birthday!

Indulgence time! Nostalgia time!

2010 - Garden Scene

2010 - Garden Scene

Yes, I am a real person and not just an ‘advertising machine’, as one reader of this blog suggested a few years ago.

I have been listening to these tunes today and last night, and they have had continued significance for me since I first heard them. I won’t go into it here regarding the ‘whys’ and ‘how comes’ these pieces of music have such significance for me. Perhaps I’ll do that if and when I hit 80!

Of course, I can’t get every piece of music that has played a role in my life in here, but here are just 47 examples:

Jollity Farm (1929) – Leslie Sarony with Jack Hylton and His Orchestra: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8dxHNAo_a7s – obviously recorded before I was born, but I used to play this 78 record when I was a kid.

No Strings (1936) – Fred Astaire: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NK4C7zXBOog – I also played this 78 a lot when I was a kid.

You Don’t Need a Licence for That (1946) – George Formby: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MWHHKMFY4yc – Ditto.

Lonely Pup in a Christmas Shop (1960) – Adam Faith: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V0_NKL2nr6I

Poetry in Motion (1960) – Johnny Tillotson: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wDCQEbJPPgI

Blue Velvet (1963) – Bobby Vinton: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icfq_foa5Mo

She Loves You (1963) – The Beatles: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0YifXhm-Zc

Bits and Pieces (1964) – The Dave Clarke Five: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XoRLIJJSG4o

Good Vibrations (1966) – The Beach Boys: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCeD_6Y3GQc

Bike (1967) – Pink Floyd: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iR234BH9Cr4 [But I hear this until 1969]

Also Sprach Zarathustra (Richard Strauss, 1896): I first heard this 1968, when I saw 2001: A Space Odyssey at the Odeon, Leicester Square with my cousin, Gerhard. It was stunning; I bought the sound track as soon as I could. This got me into classical music:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o09L-hkrzhw and also the ‘Dawn of Man’ scene from the same film: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2iiPpcwfCA – the film and music had such a big impact on my intellectual development. It would take ages to explain, so I won’t bore you with it!

Manco Capac (1969) – Quintessence: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZyYqOIqKRIU – If it hadn’t have been for this track I wouldn’t have applied to study at the University of East Anglia (1972-75 and 1976-77), and then wouldn’t have met Ruth. It’s a long story.

Cybernaut (1971) – Tonto’s Expanding Head Band: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ec8BGEb7_iA

Battlefield (1971) – Emerson, Lake & Palmer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5XUtsc6GZuU&feature=fvst

Echoes (1971) – Pink Floyd: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HehcJaTyd-E

Man Erg (1971) – Van der Graaf Generator: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M5y0GZPtJRM

Silver Machine (1972) – Hawkwind: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IfniG-AdSC4

Sylvia (1972) – Focus: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OznS7X9BOxs

If there is Something (1972) – Roxy Music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OnV-agq0Yzw

The Great Gig in the Sky (1973): Pink Floyd: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GVM7ZpQrCnQ

Sleepwalkers (1975) – Van der Graaf Generator: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DbepiON2u08

He will be ably accompanied by Chris Haigh on fiddle www.fiddlingaround.com and Paul Kerr on vocals and guitar.

‘THE LAMB’ BY WILLIAM BLAKE – SET TO MUSIC BY VICTOR RIKOWSKI

Back when I was in Havering Sixth-Form College, at the age of 17/18, I remember setting this poem by Blake to my own song. Although I haven’t played it since then, the tune always remains within my mind. This is a revisit to that song that I wrote 7/8 years ago now. This might not be exactly as it was then, but the opening tune is the one that stuck with me for all these years.

Victor Rikowski

Little Lamb, who made thee? Dost thou know who made thee?
Gave thee life, and bid thee feed
By the stream and o’er the mead;
Gave thee clothing of delight,
Softest clothing, woolly, bright;
Gave thee such a tender voice,
Making all the vales rejoice? Little Lamb, who made thee? Dost thou know who made thee? Little Lamb, I’ll tell thee, Little Lamb, I’ll tell thee:
He is called by thy name,
For he calls himself a Lamb.
He is meek, and he is mild;
He became a little child.
I a child, and thou a lamb.
We are called by his name. Little Lamb, God bless thee! Little Lamb, God bless thee!

This is a song written by Victor Rikowski during his third year at Bangor University, north Wales.

Says Victor:

“I’ve always wanted to do a recording of this song or a live performance or something, so now I’ve done this. Having only just bought myself a USB sound card thingy, this is my first bit of recording that I’ve done on my own for many years. This is the fruit of a sleepless night’s labour”

THE BONFIRE BAND AT FOREST ROOTS

Dear Forest Roots Folk

Forest Roots is back with a bang and this month we have the hugely talented Bonfire Band http://www.thebonfireband.co.uk ably supported by traditional folk duo Annie Winter and Dean Hobbs. We haven’t seen the Bonfire band for quite a while now and we’re looking forward to hearing more of their folky, bluegrassy, country mix of home grown songs.

We are also pleased that Annie, who has sung quite a few times at the club and has been warmly appreciated, will be doing a longer spot as a duo with Dean Hobbs. The Flats Family Band will be there as usual so it’s sure to be a good night.

If you’d like to perform just let us know

Forest Roots is at The Lord Rookwood, 314 Cann Hall Road, Leytonstone E11 3NW

SPECTACULAR CAPITALISM

Spectacular Capitalism: Guy Debord and the Practice of Radical Philosophy
Richard Gilman-Opalsky

Despite recent crises in the financial system, uprisings in Greece, France, Tunisia, and Bolivia, worldwide decline of faith in neoliberal trade policies, deepening ecological catastrophes, and global deficits of realized democracy, we still live in an era of “spectacular capitalism.” But what is “spectacular capitalism?” Spectacular capitalism is the dominant mythology of capitalism that disguises its internal logic and denies the macroeconomic reality of the actually existing capitalist world. Taking on this elusive mythology, and those who too easily accept it, Richard Gilman-Opalsky exposes the manipulative and self-serving narrative of spectacular capitalism.

Drawing on the work of Guy Debord, Gilman-Opalsky argues that the theory of practice and practice of theory are superseded by upheavals that do the work of philosophy. One could ask: Who better raises questions about public and private spheres of influence and control, Jürgen Habermas or the water war activists who made a rebellion in Cochabamba, Bolivia in the spring of 2000? Or, has any sociological theorist done better than the Zapatistas to reframe and raise questions about indigenous identity? Spectacular Capitalism makes the case not only for a new philosophy of praxis, but for praxis itself as the delivery mechanism for philosophy – for the field of human action, of contestation and conflict, to raise directly the most irresistible questions about the truth and morality of the existing state of affairs.

“Richard Gilman-Opalsky’s Spectacular Capitalism rescues Situationist theory and praxis from merely antiquarian and art-historical commentary and puts it in dialogue with the project of a radical philosophy for leaving the 21st century.” – McKenzie Wark, author of A Hacker Manifesto and Gamer Theory

Bio: Richard Gilman-Opalsky is Assistant Professor of Political Philosophy in the Department of Political Science at the University of Illinois at Springfield. He is the author of Unbounded Publics: Transgressive Public Spheres, Zapatismo, and Political Theory (Lexington Books, 2008), as well as numerous articles.
