The Reading Agency Lecture will take place in The Logan Hall at the Institute of Education, 20 Bedford Way, London WC1H 0AL

You can buy tickets for the lecture from Eventbrite.

Tickets are priced at £20 and £10 for concessions (under 24s).

The lecture was initiated by The Reading Agency in 2012. It aims to provide a platform for leading writers and thinkers to share original, challenging ideas about the future of reading in the UK.

Russell Brand will deliver ‘a manifesto on reading’ which will be in part personal, sharing his own experience of books and reading while growing up in the UK; and it will be in part as a public figure, sharing his views on the status of reading and storytelling in our national culture and why reading is important for young people – especially boys – in the UK today.

Russell Brand says:

“Writing is the most intimate medium. Right there in the brain, in the swamp of fear and desire. I like splashing about in there, stirring up sediment, doing the breaststroke. In this lecture I will try and drag this metaphor out for an hour.”

Our last conference in Chicago was a huge success! About 1,000 people from across the country came together and enjoyed nearly 100 workshops, panels and assemblies.  For those who were at the Chicago conference last year, you may remember the awesome turnout of folks from California and the Bay Area who presented and participated in that conference. They are taking that energy and commitment to FMFP and putting it on full blast to host our next conference.

CONFERENCE ON THE NATURE AND VALUE OF CHILDHOOD

16-17 May 2014

Currently there is widespread philosophical interest in children’s rights, parental rights and duties, and wider issues concerning good parenting and the social organisation of childrearing. Yet, to fully address these topics one needs to assume an answer to the question of ’What is a child?’ To know who owes what to children in any detail, we need to know what distinguishes childhood from adulthood, and to answer questions about the relative value of childhood and adulthood in the overall life of a human being.

This conference brings together philosophers interested in a cluster of questions that have not been sufficiently discussed so far, but which are starting to draw philosophical attention: What is childhood? Is childhood good intrinsically, or only as preparation for adulthood? If it is intrinsically good, does it have special value – would it be a loss, from the perspective of an entire human life, if one missed out on childhood? Are there any ‘intrinsic goods of childhood’, and what are they? Do we owe children things that are different in nature from the things owed to adults?

The School of Education and Lifelong Learning kindly invites you to participate in the International Conference: A Child’s World – Next Steps, taking place on 25-27 June 2014 at the Penglais Campus of Aberystwyth University, Wales, UK.

‘A Child’s World – Next Steps’ Conference has been devised to build on the success of the 2012 conference ‘A Child’s World: Working Together for a Better Future’, focusing on new concepts in Raising Standards, Curriculum Development and Safeguarding Children, with the aim of enabling collaboration, creating effective policy and sharing best practice in childhood studies within an international strategic dimension.

Focused primarily at an educational research and professional audience, the findings will be relevant across a range of disciplines, including governmental policy formulation, social care, and operational delivery of public services. The wide ranging scope of the conference will be highly applicable for international, national, regional and local government, along with education professionals and will be of direct interest to the general public.

It is intended that selected papers will be published in an edited book, providing the opportunity to identify and share best practice amongst subject professionals.

This book is a riveting report on the overblown fear of violence that turns American schools into prisons and students into suspects.

In the dozen years since the shootings at Columbine High School, hysteria has distorted the media’s coverage of school violence and American schools’ responses to it. School violence has actually been falling steadily throughout the last decade, and yet schools across the country have never been more preoccupied with security.

This climate of fear has created ripe conditions for the imposition of unprecedented restrictions on young people’s rights, dignity, and educational freedoms. In what many call the school-to-prison pipeline, the policing and practices of the juvenile justice system increasingly infiltrate the schoolhouse. These “Zero tolerance” measures push the most vulnerable and academically needy students out of the classroom and into harm’s way.

Call for papers for an edited collection tentatively titled Materialist Readings of Children’s Literature and Culture: Classic and Contemporary Essays.  This collection will consist primarily of new analyses, but will also include previously published essays in order to chart the development of materialist criticism of children’s literature, culture, and film.   

Topics may include but are not limited to the following:

• The way in which children’s literature supports or, conversely, challenges class hierarchies, especially as they intersect with gender, sexuality, and race/ethnicity

• The “political unconscious” in works of children’s literature

• Cognitive mapping

• Class conflict in children’s literature and film

• Depictions of the working class, labor history, socialism, and revolution

• Children’s literature and the left

• Materialist-feminist criticism and children’s literature and culture

• Materialist analyses of post-colonial children’s literature and culture 

• The political economy of children’s literature and culture

Please direct inquiries and submissions to the editor, Dr. Angela Hubler, atahubler@ksu.edu.  500 words abstracts, brief biography, and short C.V. are due by September 18th, 2011.  Complete essays must be submitted as an attachment in Microsoft Word, following MLA guidelines for citation and format, by November 18th, 2011.  A potential publisher has expressed interest, and a proposal will be submitted after abstracts are received. 

Editor Angela Hubler is Associate Professor in Women’s Studies atKansasStateUniversity, where she teaches courses in feminist theory, female adolescence, and women’s writing and culture.  Her recent publications analyze literary representations of collective political action in literature for children and adults. Her essays have been published in The Lion and the Unicorn, Children’s Literature Association Quarterly, Critical Survey, Papers on Language and Literature, Women’s Studies Quarterly, the National Women’s Studies Association Journal, and edited collections.

Bridging Theory and Practice: Partnerships and Collaboration in Childhood Services
Guest Editor: ESTHER CHAN, Hong Kong Institute of Education

Partnerships and collaborations between the professions, families and communities are an increasingly important dimension of policy landscapes internationally. Across a range of disciplinary fields whose practitioners work with and on behalf of children, there is an expectation that professional knowledge and service are at their most effective when there is meaningful collaboration with stakeholders.

This has important implications for pre-service education and professional development, as well as for the day-to-day working lives of practitioners working to support children in family and community settings, education, allied health services and the social service sectors. It also raises significant questions about the ways in which partnerships are established and maintained, as well presenting a range of challenges and opportunities pertaining to the future of professional engagement with stakeholders.

This special issue of the new journal Global Studies of Childhood (www.wwwords.co.uk/GSCH) will make a critical contribution to understanding the ways in which practitioners engage with children, families and communities in a variety of contexts. This will involve describing and interrogating current projects, as well as problematizing the issues around partnerships and collaborations. For example, papers may consider the tensions around policy rhetorics that invite partnerships and then are selective in their application of the initiatives to suit personal or political imperatives.

Contributors might consider the following issues and questions: Is collaboration with stakeholders’ project currently an essential element in the process of educational reform? When partnerships and collaborations are instigated, what is the impact on professionals, teachers, children as well as parents? In what way is practice and policy in a given area shaped by the voices of a variety of stakeholders? In what ways can professional educators and/or practitioners work with communities to meet children’s needs?
