The Reading Agency Lecture will take place in The Logan Hall at the Institute of Education, 20 Bedford Way, London WC1H 0AL

You can buy tickets for the lecture from Eventbrite.

Tickets are priced at £20 and £10 for concessions (under 24s).

The lecture was initiated by The Reading Agency in 2012. It aims to provide a platform for leading writers and thinkers to share original, challenging ideas about the future of reading in the UK.

Russell Brand will deliver ‘a manifesto on reading’ which will be in part personal, sharing his own experience of books and reading while growing up in the UK; and it will be in part as a public figure, sharing his views on the status of reading and storytelling in our national culture and why reading is important for young people – especially boys – in the UK today.

Russell Brand says:

“Writing is the most intimate medium. Right there in the brain, in the swamp of fear and desire. I like splashing about in there, stirring up sediment, doing the breaststroke. In this lecture I will try and drag this metaphor out for an hour.”

Honoring the contributions of Professor Jim Cummins (OISE/UT) and Professor Michalis Damanakis (University of Crete)

Language has complex implications for identity, communication, social integration, and education, but also for building inclusive societies and and intercultural dialogue while preserving cultural heritage.  While linguistic and cultural diversity in our classrooms and communities has the potential to enlighten and expand our understanding of both others and ourselves, it also presents challenges to the balance between coherence and pluralism in societies. Language diversity is frequently not recognized and undervalued in both mainstream society and education. Homogenizing and assimilationist educational practices and language policies still prevail around the globe at the risk of losing the ethno-linguistic vitality and wealth of non-dominant languages.

In our contemporary reality of ever expanding and compounding “multies” (multilingualism, multiculturalism, multimodality, multiliteracies, etc), how do we create pedagogical spaces that would nurture and enhance the linguistic communities and honour the cultural differences of students in the twenty-first century? What does it mean to rethink language diversity in education and how can we foster true inclusion in our increasingly linguistically diverse schools?  This gathering will bring together emerging and established researchers around the practices and policies of language diversity in education with representatives of school boards, teacher associations, policy makers community leaders, teachers, and school administrators to engage issues of linguistic and cultural diversity that have created a new ground for teaching and learning. A rethinking of the dimensions of language diversity in education  and its pedagogical imperatives in communal and global contexts will enable new direction with respect to the question of difference, social justice and pedagogy in the new millennium.

Our last conference in Chicago was a huge success! About 1,000 people from across the country came together and enjoyed nearly 100 workshops, panels and assemblies.  For those who were at the Chicago conference last year, you may remember the awesome turnout of folks from California and the Bay Area who presented and participated in that conference. They are taking that energy and commitment to FMFP and putting it on full blast to host our next conference.

CONFERENCE ON THE NATURE AND VALUE OF CHILDHOOD

16-17 May 2014

University of Sheffield, UK

Currently there is widespread philosophical interest in children’s rights, parental rights and duties, and wider issues concerning good parenting and the social organisation of childrearing. Yet, to fully address these topics one needs to assume an answer to the question of ’What is a child?’ To know who owes what to children in any detail, we need to know what distinguishes childhood from adulthood, and to answer questions about the relative value of childhood and adulthood in the overall life of a human being.

This conference brings together philosophers interested in a cluster of questions that have not been sufficiently discussed so far, but which are starting to draw philosophical attention: What is childhood? Is childhood good intrinsically, or only as preparation for adulthood? If it is intrinsically good, does it have special value – would it be a loss, from the perspective of an entire human life, if one missed out on childhood? Are there any ‘intrinsic goods of childhood’, and what are they? Do we owe children things that are different in nature from the things owed to adults?

10.30-11.00: Arrivals and Registration

11.30-13.00: World Cafe

Taking place in the main theatre, World Cafe will be used as a way to start having conversations in small groups.  A convener will sit in each group throughout to facilitate three 30 minute sessions around a ‘key’ question and subject. Conference participants will have the opportunity to gather around questions of interest, meet each other and contribute to group discussions, which will be recorded and shared at the end of the morning.

The Trend Away from Freedom
For thousands of years we were becoming more free. Now we have become less so:
How can Enlightenment thinkers like Hegel, Mill and (later) Fromm influence our practice today?

Instead of school 
What if mass, compulsory, full-time schooling is a 150 year old experiment which hasn’t worked?  A workshop to generate and discuss ideas about what ‘instead of school’ might look like, convened by a group with experience of the ideas and practices surrounding alternatives to school.

Direct Action in Schools
What can teachers do to raise awareness of and respond to the current market-led reforms of state schooling? This session will be led by a full-time state primary teacher.

Democratic Education is, of course, no longer radical. Staff and students from two of the world’s most famous democratic schools, the UK’s Summerhill School and Sands School, will explain and take questions about democratic education, the schools themselves, and the unique experience they offer both students and teachers.

Another Roadmap for Arts Education: ‘Glossary of Conflicted Terms’
‘Cultural Exchange’, ‘Creative Workforce’, ‘Arts Curriculum’, ‘Radical Education’ are terms which have become synonymous for a rigid, tokenistic, yet empty tick-boxing exercise around Arts Education. By unpicking these terms we want to foster a conversation that looks at what actually is important to us as arts education practitioners, teachers, students and organisers.

Collective organising is essential to transform our education system into one that will genuinely meet our needs.

The potential of socially critical environmental education

The aim of the workshop is to present and criticise dominant trends in environmental education and raise a debate on critical approaches. The discussion will draw from the participants’ teaching experiences in environmental education and relevant curriculum subjects (e.g. geography, science, citizenship) as well as their interests in environmental issues.

Ethics and practice in teaching

Teachers / educators of the Radical Education Forum have been working through their experiences to build an ethical framework for our practice. We will workshop input from the REF ‘s Behaviour Management Clinic and the application of participatory theatre methods to ethical issues, based on the “Ethics of Participatory Theatre”.

We are teachers, educators, students, researchers, community members, parents, precarious workers, people interested in being part of a wider social change. Our use of the term ‘radical’ is not meant to make claims of political purity, nor to be off-putting for those who don’t think of themselves as ‘radicals’. It is rather to mark our terrain that includes different forms of practice including popular education and research, critical literacy, participatory action research, social justice education, libertarian education and many others.

The School of Education and Lifelong Learning kindly invites you to participate in the International Conference: A Child’s World – Next Steps, taking place on 25-27 June 2014 at the Penglais Campus of Aberystwyth University, Wales, UK.

‘A Child’s World – Next Steps’ Conference has been devised to build on the success of the 2012 conference ‘A Child’s World: Working Together for a Better Future’, focusing on new concepts in Raising Standards, Curriculum Development and Safeguarding Children, with the aim of enabling collaboration, creating effective policy and sharing best practice in childhood studies within an international strategic dimension.

Focused primarily at an educational research and professional audience, the findings will be relevant across a range of disciplines, including governmental policy formulation, social care, and operational delivery of public services. The wide ranging scope of the conference will be highly applicable for international, national, regional and local government, along with education professionals and will be of direct interest to the general public.

It is intended that selected papers will be published in an edited book, providing the opportunity to identify and share best practice amongst subject professionals.

The School of Education and Lifelong Learning welcomes and invites submission of abstracts for presentation and dissemination at the conference on the following themes:

Education as Reconstruction: Another Way of Looking at Primary Education

Michael Armstrong was one of the co-authors of Children, Their World, Their Education, the final report of the The Cambridge Primary Review, and in particular of the chapters on the values and aims of primary education. In his lecture Michael will argue that the apparently triumphant standards agenda fails to recognise or to promote children’s distinctive powers of thought and action and is a betrayal of their intellectual needs and interests. He calls for a radically alternative approach to primary education, founded on the centrality of the imagination and he demonstrates the creativity that lies at the heart of learning by means of an extended example of one six-year-old child’s entry into the world of literature.

Michael began his long teaching career at Wandsworth Comprehensive School, London, in 1959. From 1964 to 1970 he was a research officer, first at the Institute of Community Studies, where he worked with Michael Young, with whom he wrote New Look at Comprehensive Schools (1964), and later at the Nuffield Foundation Resources for Learning Project, directed by Tim McMullen. He returned to the classroom in 1970 as a teacher at the radical Leicestershire Upper School, Countesthorpe College. In 1976 he left Countesthorpe in order to carry out research and to teach at Sherard Primary School in Melton Mowbray. During this time he wrote his first book, Closely Observed Children: the diary of a primary classroom. In 1981 he became headteacher of Harwell Primary School in Oxfordshire, where he remained until his retirement in 1999. Since 1986 he has also taught each summer on the MA summer programme of the Bread Loaf School of English, Middlebury College, Vermont, USA, as a visiting Professor of English. Since his retirement from Harwell in 1999 he has continued to write, lecture and carry out research into children’s learning, both in England and in the USA where he still teaches every summer. His second book, Children Writing Stories was published in 2006 and a collection of essays entitled What Children Know: essays on children’s literary and visual art, came out in 2011. Michael joined the Editorial Board of FORUM: for promoting 3-19 comprehensive education (www.wwwords.co.uk/FORUM) in 1964 and has been Chairperson of the Editorial Board since 1994.
