SCRAP FEES! FIGHT CUTS!

Yesterday saw things heating up on colleges and universities across the country. The recommendation of the Browne Review to scrap the cap and rise tuition fees to £12,000 has enraged students. Spontaneous demonstrations captured the mood of students facing attack after attack on higher education. The Comprehensive Spending Review will announce plans to cut up to 80% (£3.9bn) of the annual teaching budget next week on October 20th.

At London South Bank University students blocked the road and occupied a lobby in protest against language department closure. At Leeds a protest of more than 100 students made Channel 4 news. In Birmingham, 200 students demonstrated. 150 people came to an anti-cuts meeting called at 24 hour notice at Sheffield Uni.

At every institution we should be calling demonstrations, rallies and Students’ Union general meetings to capture the mood to build the biggest possible turnout to the Education Activist Network conference on October 31st and the national UCU/NUS demonstration on November 10th.

Students in France show the way. They have now joined workers in the largest pension protests. More than 300 secondary schools were shut down yesterday. Their response to the crisis raises the question: ‘Why not here?’

At the Education Activist Network Conference backed by NUS, UCU activists and students will be raising the prospect of coordinating French-style mass action to defeat the cuts and the Browne Review and at the same time fight for an alternative vision of education. Come along!

The cuts proposed by the Con-Dem government amount to a declaration of war on our education. Already 150,000 students have been turned away from university, hundreds of education workers have been cut and departments and courses closed down.

On Monday 11th October the Browne Review of university finance is likely to recommend a dramatic rise in tuition fees and facilitate the entry of private companies and market forces deep into the sector. This will be followed by another Con Dem budget day on 20th October with up to 40% cuts across FE and HE anticipated. Imagine what your university or college would look like with 40% of lecturers and staff gone, arts and humanity courses closed, library and support services stripped away….

We have to resist these plans to wreck our education and the future.

Last year saw students and workers taking successful united action to stop the cuts. The examples of Sussex University, Kings’ College London and Leeds University are only the beginning and show that if we fight we can win. NUS and UCU are already working together to build a joint demonstration on November 10th. This months TUC annual conference also called for coordinated industrial action against the cuts and a national demonstration for next March.

The Education Activist Network will bring together students and workers from across London’s Universities and FE colleges to discuss how we seize the initiative and build a mass movement that can fight for our education and our future.

Speakers include a BBC worker out on strike against the cuts during the Tory Party conference; a student from Athens University involved in the wave of resistance against austerity in Greece plus representatives from the NUS and the UCU. This will be followed by discussion including contributions from campaigns and struggles across London.

Education Crisis

TAKE BACK EDUCATION: EDUCATION ACTIVISTS NETWORK – NATIONAL CONFERENCE 31st OCTOBER 2010

National Conference – 31st October 2010

Under the new Con-Dem government, our education is under attack like never before. Education minister David Willetts wants fast-track degrees on the cheap and threatens to remove both the cap on university fees and the EMA for college students. University and college managers are slashing jobs, facilities and whole departments.

From the industrial action at King’s College and Tower Hamlets College to the student occupations at Middlesex University, we have been able to stop some of the most determined attacks. But the worst is still to come, and we urgently need to build and unite our resistance – and to lay out a different vision for education!

Speakers so far confirmed include:

– John McDonnell, Labour MP for Hayes and Harlington
– Alex Callinicos, KCL lecturer & author of “Universities in a Neoliberal World”
– Student campaigners & trade union activists from King’s. Sussex, Middlesex and others
– Many others TBC

After the success of our London-wide activist meetings and especially of the teach-in at King’s College in February, with around 400 delegates from union branches and student anti-cuts campaigns across the country, and against the backdrop of the ConDem budget, the Browne review and a growing number of disputes in both HE and FE, we are encouraging all students and education workers to save the date.

We encourage campaign groups, Students’ Unions and Trade Union branches to formally back the conference, using the attached model motion, and anyone on Facebook can also RSVP to this event page.  (NB please disregard previous messages indicating a date of the 31st December, this was only ever a typo).
