Theme: Is there an alternative? Management after critique

Artists work in groups. This is a primary fact of artistic production. Collective work is an a priori, a reality of creative life. At nearly every moment artists are working together in one way or another and under many different arrangements. Without the others no one can succeed. Artists’ groups have helped them to survive in a capitalist system which values art primarily as branded commodity, and in which agents seek to accumulate art as cheaply as possible. The history of artists’ collaborations describes a flow of both resistant and protective cultural formations that moves through time. These contingent practices change shape according to the necessities of artists’ lives – maximizing their chances to live cheaply with time to work on their art, and to escape alienated labour, first in the industrial shop, and now in the service and information industry.

The social organization of artistic production is generally considered to be extraneous to the forms of art. Indeed, the analysis of each has come to concern different scholarly disciplines, with formal criticism at one end, and the sociology of art – and increasingly arts administration and management of creative production – at the other. The questions of artistic collectivity and collaboration per se cuts across disciplinary lines. Different adaptations of the collaborative practice within artistic production have diverse outcomes, generating
institutions, programs and works of art, as they have ever done.

Artists’ work within groups in the fine arts is very different than work within most businesses, and even most cultural institutions. While the results may seem the same – exhibitions, installations, spectacles, publications, recordings, films, designed objects and architecture – the processes of self-organized collective work proceed from different premises and toward different goals. The organizational structure of artistic work in groups has not been much studied.

This conference stream invites contributes that engage analytically with the questions of collectivity and collaboration among artists. A materialist point of view on the question might find that collaboration among cultural workers is contingent, circumstantial, and practical – an outgrowth of cultural economies and a necessary condition of many kinds of cultural work. Working collectively is about making a living. But modalities of collaboration are also a prime concern of those who want to remake the world, to join the great issues of the day, and to find a reason to work at all.

Please send proposals / abstracts of up to 500 words to Stevphen Shukaitis (sshuka@essex.ac.uk) by 31 January 2015. Papers selected for the panel will receive confirmation by 15 February 2015.

Please note that there will be a registration fee for the conference (the amount of which has not been confirmed yet), although there is a reduced rate for PhD students.

EXHIBITION

Visual arts exhibition will be opened and painting, sculpture and ceramic works will be exhibited in 2nd World Conference on Design, Arts and Education.  Works of the exhibition will be published in “DAE-2013 Exhibition Catalogue” which is in A4 size, colourful, glazed paper with ISBN number. The abstracts can be one-page long (200-300 words). The abstract include Problem Statement, Purpose of Study, Methods, Findings and Results, and Conclusions and Recommendations (These elements may need some adaptation in the case of discussion papers: Background, Purpose of Study, Sources of Evidence, Main Argument, and Conclusions). Please note that some elements are optional in abstracts.

VIRTUAL PARTICIPATION

Researchers who are unable to resolve the funding issue concerning the conference expenses will be provided with an alternative approach for participation, namely, Virtual Online Presentation. Those who would like to make their presentations online from their home countries will also be awarded with a certificate and their papers will be considered for publications similar to other participants as if they were present physically. Those who would like to make use of the Virtual Online Presentation facility will be requested to send their virtual posters or other soft copy materials such as power point presentations to the secretariat. In addition, these participants who would prefer to make use of the Virtual Online Presentation facility may also contribute to the conference through video conferencing.

QUESTIONS OF VALUE – FROM COMMONS TO COMMMUNOMICS: RESISTING PRIVATIZATION

Moderated by: Kuba Szreder

The Politicized Practice Research Group (PPRG) and Radar are initiating a new events series devoted to the critical examination and evaluation of social forms through which ‘values’ are produced, perpetuated and extracted in contemporary society and economies, in arts and culture. The sessions will invite a number of speakers and thinkers from a range of disciplines to share their thoughts and ideas on the subject of value. We will develop a particular focus on contemporary art, also inviting artists who address questions of value through, in and with their practice.

The Questions of Value events aim to explore the variety of modes of valorisation, through which certain objects, ways of living, emotions, and even human beings are rendered as ‘valuable’ while others are neglected as unwanted and disposable.  The series will review and assess some of the contemporary debates and theories in which the concept of ‘value’ is central, from economics and ethics to mathematics and semiotics. The seminars will encompass a wide range of subjects, including the semiotics of speculation and the economics of financial capitalism, as well as contemporary forms of appropriating and extracting value.

In the first session of the series – we are delighted to welcome Christophe Bruno, Neil Cummings, Open Music Archive, Toni Prug and Stevphen Shukaitis to Loughborough to discuss questions of value with a focus on – From Commons to Communomics: Resisting Privatization. Christophe Bruno will unveil the mechanisms that create and capture the value of symbols in semio-capitalism.  Neil Cummings will investigate the notion of abundance of the commons from a future perspective, imagining what kind of evaluative structures will evolve if the dogma of scarcity and economic restriction is abolished. Open Music Archive will present their project ‘Song division’, which resists the enclosures of public domain by copyright regimes and proprietary intellectual ownership.  Toni Prug will conceptualize communomics as based on an egalitarian theory of value, encompassing modes of measuring the utilitarian value of things and services without attaching a price tag to them. Stevphen Shukaitis will talk about the class composition of the metropolitan factory, locating the question of the commons in a contemporary urban context.

AHRC Masters and PhD Studentships available

As part of an Arts and Humanities Research Council block grant consortium between the University of Stirling and the University of Strathclyde, Professional Preparation Masters and PhD Studentships are available in the field of Librarianship and Information Studies.

For the academic year 2012/13 there are up to 2 Professional Preparation Masters (PPM) studentships, and for PhD research there is one studentship available.

The Professional Preparation Masters studentships are available to eligible who are applying for either the MSc Information and Library Studies, or MSc Information Management courses at the University of Strathclyde in the 2012/13 academic year.

The conference considers what ‘Impact’ means for us, our work, our understandings and future developments. Governments, international agencies, funding bodies and policy-makers increasingly use this term. What does it mean?

The social sciences, creative arts, education and humanities are currently under attack on a global scale as funding is concentrated on STEM related subjects; but the threatened fields of scholarship are themselves evolving new ways of thinking and practice and new sites and methods of enquiry.

Practitioners and academics in the threatened areas are responding to the situation with vitality and determination: experimental, adventurous, playful, but serious in redefining boundaries and finding new ways forward. DPR 12 maps these emerging knowledge regimes, their impacts, the imagined futures they enable and the implications for practice, research, learning and teaching.

DPR and PCA have joined forces for this conference. DPR is deeply engaged in the critical interrogation of contemporary culture as it plays out in the academy in research, learning and teaching. Similarly, PCA is working with energy and passion to implement a vision of high quality education for life in contemporary arts practice. Bringing the two together is an adventure in creative synergy.

The conference explores the potential impact on each other of the creative arts and social sciences in terms of theory and practice.

PRAXIS & PEDAGOGY

The Praxis and Pedagogy research/seminar group at GradCAM aim to develop an innovative programme of practice and theory that is structured by three related elements. These are the theoretical, the practical and the pedagogical.

Theory articulates models of analysis, interpretation, and conceptualization that express the general conditions of particular objects, relationships or situations. It describes the systems and structures of knowledge, power, symbolic representation and material exchange that operate within a wide range of social, political and cultural fields. Moreover, theory establishes connections between distinct discursive and conceptual fields, allowing for interdisciplinary discussions to emerge around shared ideas and issues.

Practice is the basis from which the possibility of ‘new thinking’ can develop. The notion of ‘praxis’ implies the urgency that theory expands beyond its own history, beyond the perceived understanding of its proper practice, in order to propose new models of critical reflection and change.

To establish ‘praxis’ as the core programme of the group is to prescribe the conditions of openness, uncertainty and risk. Theoretical thinking and new innovative pedagogical models will support the experimental nature of the practice. By aligning our programme with an ethos of experimentation between theory and practice in this way, the group intends to expand not only the range of objects under investigation but also the possibilities of theory itself as practice – as a form of creativity, of creative activity, responsive to developments both internal to its traditional fields, and external in areas of investigation not commonly associated with theory.

Finally, pedagogy insists on the limits of theory: on the structural barriers that condition all acts of predication and interpretation. By linking theory to practice, and practice to pedagogy, the group questions the assumptions and generalizations elaborated by theoretical projects to interrogate what remains undisclosed or unthought in their concepts and practices.

The group is convened by Glenn Loughran, artist, activist, and PhD Scholar at the NCAD and GradCAM. Other members include John Buckley (NCAD/GradCAM), Edia Connole (NCAD/GradCAM), Susan Gill (DIT/GradCAM) and Thomas McGraw-Lewis (DIT/GradCAM).

The group convenes Wednesdays bi-weekly.

ARTS AGAINST CUTS // DIRECT WEEKEND THIS SATURDAY AND SUNDAY [Jan 15th and 16th]

Following on from the fantastic Long Weekend at Goldsmiths in December, the Turner Prize and National Gallery teach-ins, the Book Block and the many occupations and actions that emerged from that weekend, this Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th Arts Against Cuts are organising another weekend of action, planning, imagining, working and thinking together.

The schedule below has been drawn from the great list of proposals sent in. There will be lots of free space for anyone who wished to put forward ideas on the days, organised spontaneity.  Schedule may shift around a bit.

Arts Against Cuts was initiated across London Art Schools last Autumn.

 
We want to reclaim the public, critical space that universities and art schools should be, transforming those buildings into art schools for the future, bringing together art students, artists, cultural workers and those fighting the cuts from across the UK to share in defiance against the relentless marketization of our education and our lives. We will share knowledge and skills; we will collaborate across disciplines, ages and backgrounds; we will turn our imagination and desires into tools of disobedience. We will make sure that all the knowledge, ideas, tools and projects which emerge from the event will be disseminated and put into action in streets and public spaces across the country and be shared by all those in the anti-cuts movements. The Direct Weekend will be a feast of non stop workshops and presentations, slide shows and films, how-to sessions and skill shares, and a free space for spontaneous creation of events, actions and expressions. Its not important what art is but what it does, and right now it has the potential to turn the crisis of cuts into an opportunity for change.

CALL FOR PAPERS

We are living in increasingly insecure times. In the face of drastic climate change, global economic uncertainty and imperialist wars with no clear battlefield or determined timeline, a good many social scientists have concluded that insecurity, broadly defined and in its many forms, is the new norm. For the next issue, Alternate Routes invites submissions on the various ways in which (in)security has manifested in the new millennium. How has state repression been employed and under what pretexts? What lessons may be drawn from policing dissent? How does ecological degradation threaten our — food, labour, biospheric, geopolitical and physical — security? In what ways are planetary life and the future of the earth threatened? To what extent has labour market restructuring made work more precarious? What groups and persons are most vulnerable to insecure forms of work and labour? How have labour unions been impacted? How may we understand empire today? What relationships are there between war, terror and foreign policy?

Alternate Routes is also interested in Media, Arts and Cultural contributions with political and/or academic merits. This may include works of poetry, verse, photography, graphic design and media analyses. We likewise welcome reviews of books, theater, art exhibits, documentaries and cinema. Finally, Alternate Routes appreciates rejoinders and/or reflections on previously published material. The deadline for submissions is 15 March 2011.
