JOURNAL OF CULTURAL RESEARCH IN ART EDUCATION

The Journal of Cultural Research in Art Education (jCRAE) is an annual publication of the United States Society for Education through Art. jCRAE focuses on social and cultural research relevant for art and visual culture education, including cultural foundations of art education, cross-cultural and multicultural research in art education, and cultural aspects of art in education. These areas should be interpreted in a broad sense and can include community arts organizations, schools, arts administration, art therapy, and other disciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches that are relevant to art and visual culture education. Theoretical research and research in which qualitative and/or quantitative methods as well as visual and other formats and strategies are used will be considered for publication.

CALL FOR PAPERS for 2014

Mini-themed issue (Volume 34, 2014) on Space, Place, And Time in Art and Visual Culture Education

How do space and place affect the way we experience the world and create art? How do they affect the politics of who we are and how we teach? The Journal of Cultural Research in Art Education invites submissions for a mini-themed issue on Space, Place, and (or) Time in Art and Visual Culture Education, to be published Summer 2014.

Submissions from a broad range of perspectives are encouraged. A variety of formats are also welcome—including traditional academic essays, visual essays, or alternative formats—that fit the purposes of the journal to address issues of art, education, and culture.  Image-based submissions should be accompanied by explanatory text or an artist statement. Short manuscripts are generally 1,000 to 2,000 words, longer manuscripts 3,000 to 4,000 words.

Click here for a longer prospectus on the theme, or to submit, please visit http://www.jcrae.org.

Submissions on other topics are always welcome; space, place, and (or) time are a “mini-theme.”

Preferred deadline: 1 November, 2013

Send your submissions electronically to the journal editor, Elizabeth Garber, at egarber@email.arizona.edu.

Elizabeth Garber, Editor

Jan van Eyck

DEFEND THE JAN VAN EYCK ACADEMY

For many years the Janvan Eyck Academy in Maastricht has been an international centre for critical and radical theory. The Dutch government has recently proposed drastic changes to cultural funding. These changes will directly endanger the JvE and other Dutch post-academic institutions.

Please support the campaign to defend the JvE by sending an email to: janvaneyck-adefendablespace@janvaneyck.nl

Comments can be read at http://janvaneyck-adefendablespace.tumblr.com

For more information about the innovative activities of the JvE, see: http://www.janvaneyck.nl/

Recently the Dutch Ministry of Culture published a document containing its policy for the period 2013-16. Amongst a whole range of intended drastic cuts, it proposes that the State should stop financing post-academic institutes like the Jan van Eyck Academie. There is no explicit motivation for this plan, other than a reference to the supposed need to reduce public expenditure. The State Secretary, Halbe Zijlstra, restricts himself to stating that the cultural field should self-finance post-academic formation and education, ‘as the legal professions and building industry do.’ However it is clear that the principles motivating the policy document derive from a logic of austerity and will result in the application of business criteria.

As far as the Jan van Eyck Academie is concerned this policy would mean a severe cut of its means as of 2013, resulting in its closure in 2016. Instead of financing an experimental, non-university and research-oriented post-academic institute like the Jan van Eyck Academie, the State Secretary wants to invest in fifty artists who have proved to be ‘successful’. Despite the fact that the Jan van Eyck Academie can easily demonstrate its essential role in the successful careers of numerous artists, designers, and theoreticians, this contribution has never been articulated in terms of ‘success.’ The Academie is about combining research in the fine arts, design, and theory, and thus about creating invaluable interdisciplinary connections and radical innovations. Such places of intellectual and artistic freedom are necessary, and the inability of the Ministry to recognise this testifies to the obtuseness and short-sightedness of its policy.

We strongly oppose the intentions of the Ministry of Culture, for we want the Jan van Eyck Academie, along the other post-academic institutes, to continue to do what it is good at. We repudiate an austerity driven policy which will result in a blind erasure of an institute that has proven to be an important element in the Dutch and international network of artistic and art-related practices. We therefore request the State Secretary to withdraw his plans.

Critical Pedagogy

EDUCATIONAL SPACES OF ALTERITY

CALL FOR PAPERS

Educational Spaces of Alterity
University of Nottingham, Tuesday 26th April 2010

Nottingham Critical Pedagogy invites contributions for a day of workshops considering spaces (both inside and outside the academy) that may help challenge the dominance of neoliberal logics, alienated practices and Eurocentric hegemony in contemporary educational practice, and in so doing contribute to radical social change. We are pleased to announce that John Holloway will be hosting a keynote workshop at the event.

We hope to welcome contributions from a variety of disciplines and from inside and outside the academy. These can be in any format, but we especially encourage those that break from traditional conference paper models: workshops, artistic engagements, poster presentations and performances would all be welcomed. We welcome suggestions for entire workshop sessions (90 minutes), or single contributions, which we will group into workshops.

Our event partners Spaces of Alterity: a conference hosted by the University of Nottingham’s Department of Culture, Film and Media on Wed 27th-Thurs 28th April, with keynote addresses by China Miéville and Alberto Toscano. Both events are designed to work on their own, but participants are more than welcome to attend both should they wish, and we will be co-curating an Annexinema film night with Spaces of Alterity (details tbc) to show short films which touch upon the themes of the two events.

A non-exhaustive list of themes you may wish to consider is offered over the page. Please do not feel these are mutually exclusive:

Critical Education and ‘The Crisis’

  • How can critical education respond to the crisis in higher education and wider societal crises?
  • Do these crises close down or create spaces of hope for critical education?
  • Defending the university? Transforming the university? Abandoning the university?

Education and the Affective

  • Emotional epistemologies and pedagogies.
  • The role of hope in critical education.
  • ‘Radical love’.

Community Education

  • Skillshare workshops.
  • Social movements/community politics.
  • Challenging the borders between HE and community.
  • The role of non-traditional educational spaces (art galleries, social centres, etc).

Border Thinking and Hybridity

  • The importance of identity and difference for critical education.
  • Challenging hegemonic and Eurocentric perspectives.
  • How can we introduce the subaltern into the classroom?

Reflections on Practice

  • Experiences of critical education.
  • What can we learn from past experiences, experiments and struggle?

Art, Music and Critical Education

  • The role of art and music in critical education.
  • Resonances between critical education and contemporary theory and practice in art and music.
  • Problems of assessment in critical and artistic education: or is assessment the problem?

Please send abstracts and information on the format you wish your presentation to take to nottinghamcriticalpedagogy@gmail.com no later than Tuesday 8th February. These should be no more than 300 words, but may contain links to further reading regarding your chosen method of presentation.

Registration is free for Educational Spaces of Alterity but there are fees for Spaces of Alterity: attendance for one day is £25/£35; for both days it’s £45/55 (cheaper price for students and unwaged).

We have a limited amount of money to help cover the travel and accommodation costs of participants who would not otherwise be able to attend, or to help with fees for those who wish to stay for Spaces of Alterity. Details will be announced once abstracts have been received. Food and drink will be provided for all.
