IN THE CROSSFIRE: ADVENTURES OF A VIETNAMESE REVOLUTIONARY

This is to invite you to a
BOOK LAUNCH/TALK

In The Crossfire: Adventures of a Vietnamese Revolutionary

By Ngo Van

Wednesday 8 June, 7.0pm

Housmans Bookshop, 5 Caledonian Road, London, N1 9DX (2 mins walk from Kings Cross station)

Cost: £3, redeemable against any purchase

Ngo Van joined the struggle against the French colonial regime in Vietnam as a teenager in the 1920s, suffering imprisonment and hardship. But when revolution swept Vietnam at the end of the Second World War, the Stalinists of the Vietnamese Communist Party took control and tried physically to eliminate other socialists and anti-colonialists. Van escaped this massacre, in which many of his comrades were murdered. From 1948 he lived in exile in Paris, where he took a factory job and participated in workers’ movements before, during and after the 1968 general strike.

Van, who died in 2005, wrote extensively about Vietnamese worker and peasant resistance, both to French colonialism and to Ho Chi Minh’s brand of Stalinism, helping to hand that history on to later generations.

In The Crossfire, published by AK Press, is the English edition of Ngo Van’s autobiography. Hilary Horrocks, one of the book’s translators, will talk about this unique eye-witness account of a little-known aspect of the anti-colonial struggle, and read from Van’s vivid story of secret meetings, arrests, torture, battles and insurrection. Simon Pirani, who researched the history of Vietnamese Trotskyism and edited some of Van’s earlier English-language publications, will also speak. There will be plenty of time for questions and discussion from all.

We Are the Crisis

A CALCULUS OF POWER: GRAND STRATEGY IN THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY

BY PETER GOWAN, INTRODUCED BY TARIQ ALI

PUBLISHED: 18 OCTOBER 2010
———————————–
“One of the most formidable intellects among young radicals from the 1960s New Left.” – Misha Glenny

“Peter was a socialist intellectual of the highest calibre, combining enormous energy and independence of mind with a truly collective spirit.” – Tariq Ali

“For those who wish to understand the reality of contemporary politics, here is an invaluable handbook. Peter Gowan exposes the pretensions of power with penetrating clarity.”  – Andrew J. Bacevich, author of WASHINGTON RULES: AMERICA’S PATH TO PERMANENT WAR
———————————–
In this wide-ranging and incisive collection, Peter Gowan traces the contours of the world order that emerged after the end of the Cold War and assesses its prospects in the light of the global economic downturn. Arguing that the present inter-state system was shaped from the outset by Washington’s drive to maintain its status as global hegemon, Gowan dissects several cherished myths of the liberal mainstream, offering a radical counter-history of the UN and a sharp critique of the West’s interventions in the Balkans.

Gowan provides a forceful response to advocates of a new cosmopolitanism, and engages with neo-realist theories of international relations—asking whether the US invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan have resulted in a crisis for their visions of American power, and discussing what the lineaments of a future order might be.

Gowan sadly passed away between completing this book and its publication. The introduction to A CALCULUS OF POWER is provided by Tariq Ali, who has worked closely with Gowan throughout their careers, after first meeting in 1967 through the Vietnam Solidarity Campaign. In Gowan’s obituary, Ali commented: “the international left has lost one of its most astute political analysts, and NEW LEFT REVIEW the most generous and steadfast of comrades.”
Gowan’s death is a great loss to the left and to the field of international politics, and Verso is proud to publish his last book.

———————————–
PETER GOWAN (1946–2009) taught international relations for many years at London Metropolitan University. He was the author of THE GLOBAL GAMBLE, co-editor of THE QUESTION OF EUROPE, cofounder of the journal LABOUR FOCUS on Eastern Europe and a longstanding member of the editorial board of NEW LEFT REVIEW.

American Empire

Empire in Decline?

Launch of the Journal of Critical Globalisation Studies Issue 4: ‘Empire in Decline?’

A talk by Francis Shor

The launch of the forthcoming special issue of the JCGS on ‘Crisis’ will be introduced by past contributor, Francis Shor, giving a presentation of his new book, Dying Empire: U.S Imperialism and Global Resistance, followed by a drinks reception, at:

Royal Holloway College, Bedford Square, 2 Gower Street, WC1E 6DP, London

April 27th from 16.00 to 19.00

Open to all; just turn up!

Is theUnited States an empire in decline, as argued by world systems theorists? Indeed, can theUS even be categorized as an “empire”? This presentation, based on material from Shor’s latest book “Dying Empire,” will highlight the economic, geopolitical, and ideological/cultural dimensions of the rise and fall of the US Empire.

Although focused on the long trajectory of US empire, special attention will be given to the post WWII construction of American global hegemony and the more recent flashpoints indicative of the decline of that hegemony.

Solidarity and the Radical Film and Lecture Series bring you a weekend of discussion regarding the key issues that radical activists face today, as capitalism enters the third year of a profound crisis that has presented stark challenges to social movements and left organization.

Both the left and the ruling class struggle to find strategies that will see their side through the crisis, while workers and the oppressed continue to pay for the economic crisis and the endless wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

But even as the crisis has exacted enormous cost from the working class and its organizations, popular struggles have emerged that we can not only celebrate but also learn from—that’s what this weekend is about. Drawing lessons and inspiration from the strikes and struggles that have marked this period and charting our course in a difficult political terrain.

Join us for a weekend of debate and discussion about where movements have gone in the wake of the biggest crisis in seventy years, the role of the anti-capitalist left in rebuilding mass movements that can win—and the political renewal that is necessary for left politics to become relevant in a world marked by the resurgence of the right.
