Raya Dunayevskaya’s classic, ‘Marxism and Freedom’, was published in New York in 1958 with preface by Herbert Marcuse. There have since been several later editions and numerous translations.

As Paul Mason wrote recently in the New Statesman:

“As Dunayevskaya understood, the impulse towards freedom is created by more than just exploitation: it is triggered by alienation, the suppression of desire, the humiliation experienced by people on the receiving end of systemic racism, sexism and homophobia. Everywhere capitalism follows anti-human priorities it stirs revolt – and it’s all around us. In the coming century, just as Marx predicted, it is likely that automation coupled with the socialisation of knowledge will present us with the opportunity to liberate ourselves from work. That, as he said, will blow capitalism ‘sky high’. The economic system that replaces it will have to be shaped around the goal he outlined in 1844: ending alienation and liberating the individual.”

R F McKenzie is a largely forgotten libertarian educationalist, but Ros Kane considers that he has written the last words on the subject. Attempting to initiate child-centred, creative practices within the state system as head of two Scottish secondary schools, he was – not surprisingly – twice kicked out, ending his days writing and lecturing. Ros, who has flirted with teaching and now works in child mental health, will present an account of Bob McKenzie’s life, work and books, and invite a discussion about what lessons we can learn of the possibilities and pitfalls of trying to apply A.S. Neill-type ideas in state schools. Ros Kane is author of To Have An Only Child.

‘We talked practically non-stop’:  Mackenzie and his radical networks (1910-1987)
This talk explores how Mackenzie’s life and work can be understood in the wider context of radical educational and political ideas in the twentieth century. Emily will draw on her current research on John Aitkenhead (1910-1998), who was friends with Mackenzie, and ran a private boarding school in Scotland called Kilquhanity (1940-1995) based on many of their shared ideas about freedom and community in education.  I will also share perspectives on Mackenzie from my research on Leila Berg (1917-2012) drawing particularly on a transcript of an over-night meeting which Berg hosted at her home in London, in 1968 – a radical cocktail of Mackenzie, Duane, Neill and Holt.  I will argue that this network and their debates can help us draw significant distinctions between progressive and radical educational ideas – and their relationship to anarchist political thought.

Emily Charkin’s historical work is concerned with anarchist educational ideas, experiments and the learning experiences of ordinary people.  She uses these historical accounts to cast light on debates in the philosophy of education in the present. She is currently working on an ESRC funded PhD at the UCL Institute of Education with a working title: ‘Together they build a structure to suit their needs’: Children’s experiences of self-build, radical education and anarchism from the 1930s to today. Her previous work has been about the Peckham Health Centre (1935-1950), Whiteway Colony (1926-today), Colin Ward (1924-2010), Leila Berg (1917-2012) and the US de-schoolers in the 1970s. Emily has also worked outside academia as a social researcher at the National Centre for Social Research and a curriculum director for the civic leadership organisation, Common Purpose.  She and her architect-builder husband are currently setting up a work hub and ‘school’ of self-reliance at Wilderness Wood where adults and children can work and learn together.

Frantz Fanon (1926-61) is widely considered one of the most important anti-colonial theorists of the twentieth century. Today we are witnessing a resurgence of interest in his contributions to philosophy, psychology and revolutionary theory in light of such realities as persistent racial discrimination in the West, the rise of religious fundamentalism, and the social crises enveloping much of the developing world. This talk will re-examine Fanon’s contributions to ongoing debates over race, racism, and recognition in light of the intellectual sources that motivated much of his work—especially Marxist theory and Hegelian philosophy.

Peter Hudis is author of Frantz Fanon: Philosopher of the Barricades (Pluto Press, 2015) and Marx’s Concept of the Alternative to Capitalism (Brill, 2012). He has edited or co-edited numerous works, including The Power of Negativity: Selected Writings on the Dialectic of Hegel and Marx, by Raya Dunayevskaya (Lexington, 1992) and The Rosa Luxemburg Reader (Monthly Review Books, 2006). He is currently general editor of The Complete Works of Rosa Luxemburg, which will make all of her work available in 14 volumes (3 volumes have appeared so far). He is Professor of Philosophy and Humanities at Oakton Community College in the U.S.

The Social Science Centre (SSC) in Lincoln is a self-organised co-operative higher learning provider that is democratic at all levels of its organisation. The scholars who are members of the Centre work and study together whether they are traditionally students or teachers. One of the aims of the Centre is to analyse and dissolve the tensions in the relationships between research and teaching, and students and academics. Set up by academics from the University of Lincoln, the Centre has no relationship with the University, although it is a critique of the formal institution as a dysfunctional neoliberal arrangement in many ways. The SSC aims to ‘reinvent’ the University and transform the scholars’ relationship to knowledge in order to insert their own experiences into theoretical knowledges that aim to emancipate them as active change agents. The SSC engenders provocations, conversations and discussions that enliven the notion that all those who are involved in active knowledge work should become (co-) producers of knowledge. Two of the (student) scholars and an academic from Lincoln will be visiting the Anarchist Research Group to talk about the centre and their experiences studying there.

In this session, we would like to tell you a little about our experiences with the SSC and then invite a discussion on the SSC, self-organised education and the relationships between education, learning, and social change.

The Social Science Centre provides free public higher education in the city of Lincoln and emphasises the collective and collaborative nature of education. The Centre was opened in 2011 by academics and students and Lincoln residents who feel passionately that those wishing to study higher education should not have to take on the burden of debt. There is no fee to pay when joining the Centre, only what you can afford. Free also means freedom to study outside of the current disciplinary structures of higher education around topics and issues that are of direct concern to you and your local community.

ANARCHIST RESEARCH GROUP: Our meetings are friendly and informal. They are usually held on the fourth Saturday each month, at the Torriano Meeting House in Kentish town, 99 Torriano Avenue, London NW5 2RX between 2.00pm and 4.30 pm

The original Left Book Club was founded in 1936 as a means of promoting radical debate in Britain. It swiftly became a phenomenon, distributing over 2 million books and forming 1,200 reading and discussion groups across the country. It engaged in political activity, including solidarity work (e.g. with Spain), political agitation and much else. The LBC is considered a factor in the creation of the Welfare State and in Labour’s landslide election victory of 1945. It closed in 1948.

Today we face a similar crisis to that of the 1930s, with capitalism breeding inequality, suffering and violence around the world. As then, however, the global left remains mobilised and committed to the creation of a fairer society, free of the repression and austerity that has defined the modern era.

The re-launch of the Left Book Club will help us rise to the challenge posed by the global crisis. The LBC will publish four books a year covering a range of progressive traditions, perspectives and ideas focused on the UK, Europe and the rest of the world.

Our aim is for these books to form the basis of a wide network of reading circles, discussion groups and other educational and cultural activities relevant to constructing the conditions for progressive social change in the interests of working people.

Since the 19th century, capitalism has radically transformed work, making the worker, in Marx’s language, a mere “appendage to the machine.”  This deepened under 20th century assembly lines and has been extended globally today, as seen in places like China or Bangladesh.  In recent years, alienated labor has begun to spread from the factory floor into white collar and professional work in the U.S. and other developed countries. All of this is fueled by fear in a system wherein ever-larger sectors of the population face permanent unemployment and precarity.

Having experienced the harshest type of capitalist austerity, which has featured depression level unemployment, the Greek people voted first for the anti-austerity leftist Syriza Party, which includes several Marxists among its leaders.  Then, in July, they voted overwhelmingly in a referendum to support Syriza in its determination not to bow to further austerity measures from the country’s international creditors.  In response, the creditors, led by Germany, seemed to want to make an example of this small country that had dared to challenge austerity from the left.  The creditor nations doubled down, threatening Greece with banishment from the Eurozone and even worse economic privation.  In response to these threats, which even the US seemed to consider excessive, Syriza’s leadership agreed to the very austerity measures the referendum vote had opposed a few days before. Syriza is splitting, but its majority has now voted to support austerity. What is the meaning of these events for Greece, for global capitalism, for the struggle to abolish it, and for the left?

French philosopher and philologist Barbara Cassin visits Goldsmiths on 26 June to launch both her new book and our latest multi-disciplinary research centre, the Centre for Philosophy and Critical Thought (CPCT).

At the evening event organised by Dr Alberto Toscano (Co-Director, CPCT) and Filippo Del Lucchese (Brunel University), Barbara will be joined by Étienne Balibar (Kingston), Lucie Campos (Institut Français) and Jacques Lezra (NYU) for a panel discussion on Dictionary of Untranslatables: A Philosophical Lexicon – an encyclopedic dictionary of 400 important philosophical, literary, and political terms and concepts that defy easy, or any, translation from one language and culture to another.

The Centre for Philosophy and Critical Thought was established in May 2015, based in Sociology, and run jointly with the Centre for Cultural Studies. Its Co-Directors are Alberto Toscano (Sociology) and Julia Ng (CCS). CPCT has anacademic membership and advisory board drawn from various departments across the college, and an international roster of external affiliates.

A home for philosophical inquiry and rigorous intellectual dialogue at Goldsmiths, the Centre’s work draws on those traditions which view the practices of critique and criticism as central to the definition of philosophy, and which consider reflection on philosophy’s complex relationships with other disciplines and forms of thought as constitutive of philosophical activity itself.

CPCT will provide teaching and learning support for the Philosophy modules on the new Politics, Philosophy & Economics (PPE) degree, based in Politics.

All are welcome to attend the launch event on 26 June (5pm-8pm, RHB 137a) – booking is not required.

Judging by the wide disparities in contemporary teacher training and educational practices, it would seem that no one is quite sure.

Philosophical Perspectives on Teacher Education presents a series of ell-argued, thought-provoking essays that pointg to the ethical considerations that should be addressed when proposing and implementing teacher training and educational policies and practices.
