6th IEA INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH CONFERENCE

24–26 June 2015, Cape Town, South Africa

International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA)

IEA and the University of Pretoria in South Africa invite you to participate in the 6th IEA International Research Conference (IRC-2015). The conference will be held on 24–26 June 2015 in Cape Town, South Africa, and will be preceded by training workshops on secondary data analysis on 22–23 June 2015. We look forward to seeing you in Cape Town!

The IEA IRC-2015 will provide an international forum for all those working with IEA study data to present their findings and exchange views on critical educational research issues in a comparative and global context. Researchers will have the opportunity to engage in creative dialogue about their secondary analysis findings, as well as to consider the emerging implications of their research for the development and methodology of large-scale assessment and current debates in education policy and practice. In conjunction with the conference, the IEA DPC will conduct a series of two-day training workshops on the use of large-scale assessment data.

About the host

The Centre for Evaluation and Assessment (CEA) is a research center in the Faculty of Education at the University of Pretoria, one of the largest and most prominent universities in South Africa. The center works with governmental and non-governmental organizations, educational institutions, and foundations nationally and internationally to undertake research and development activities related to system-level and other levels of evaluation and assessment in education. The CEA also provides postgraduate students many opportunities to work in these fields for their studies, and is the national center for PIRLS 2006, PIRLS 2011, PIRLS 2016, and SITES 2006.

POSTDISCIPLINARY STUDIES IN DISCOURSE

Call for Book Proposals – new book series from Palgrave Macmillan

Postdisciplinary Studies in Discourse

Series Editors: Johannes Angermuller and Judith Baxter

Discourse Studies is a field studying the social production of meaning at the intersection of language & society. Its principal focus is upon the central role of meaning production for the construction of hierarchies and hegemonies, identities and subjectivities. The field comprises a range of approaches, strands and schools such as poststructuralist, critical, conversational, interactional, pragmatic and semiotic approaches to discourse to name but a few.

In the past, Discourse Studies have sometimes testified to a divide between theoretical and epistemological orientations on the one hand and more methodological, analytical and empirical orientations on the other. At the same time, an increasing exchange can be observed between various strands and approaches across the entire spectrum of the social sciences and humanities. The series invites contributions from different disciplines across the social sciences and encourages contributors to reflect upon the development of theoretical and methodological strands from both their own disciplinary perspective and from positions beyond their immediate discipline.

The “Postdisciplinary Studies in Discourse” series invites authors to address the theory/practice divide by integrating theory, data analysis and critique within a single research work. The series is open to new developments in Discourse Studies, including postmodern, constructivist, emergent and poststructuralist approaches to discourse theory and analysis, which may cross traditional disciplinary boundaries.

In summary, we invite you to send in your book proposal if your work responds to some of the following broad criteria:

  • Making an innovative, theoretical or epistemological contribution to the field of Discourse Studies
  • Offering an open and reflexive dialogue among different strands within the interdisciplinary space of language & society
  • Showing disciplinary self-reflexivity and making connections between different fields
  • Linking theoretical, critical and empirical challenges in Discourse Studies
  • Developing narratives between theory-development, empirical analysis and critique
  • Reflecting on how your research is or can be applied in non-academic contexts.

Kevin Anderson, author of “Marx at the Margins: On Ethnicity, Nationalism, and Non-Western Societies”

Robert Paul “Gabe” Gabrielsky, longtime socialist and labor activist

 

This meeting will focus on two pages in U.S radical history, each with great relevance for today:  (1) In light of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, Kevin Anderson will take up Marx’s Civil War writings in terms of race, class, democracy, and revolution. (2) Gabe Gabrielsky will focus on Eugene Debs and the Socialist Party, one of the high points of labor and socialist organization in U.S. history.

 

Background readings for those interested:

Kevin suggests Ch. 3 of “Marx at the Margins” or his shorter essay on Marx and the Civil War, or his critique of Spielberg’s “Lincoln.”

The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) is a proposed trade deal between the EU and the US. It poses a profound threat to public services, including education, leaving them wide open not only to greater privatisation but will make it harder for any future government to regulate foreign private sector companies operating in our public services. TTIP is also an affront to democracy. The talks are being pursued without any transparency or democratic oversight by the EU and the US. If they succeed, they will take disputes between companies and governments away from independent courts and make them the preserve of unaccountable tribunals dominated by corporate lawyers.

POWER, ACCELERATION AND METRICS IN ACADEMIC LIFE

Call for Contributions: Power, Acceleration and Metrics in Academic Life

There is little doubt that science and knowledge production are presently undergoing dramatic and multi-layered transformations accompanied by new imperatives reflecting broader socio-economic and technological developments. The unprecedented proliferation of audit cultures preoccupied with digitally mediated measurement and quantification of scholarship and the consolidation of business-driven managerialism and governance modes are commonplace in the contemporary academy. Concurrently, the ever-increasing rate of institutional change, (the need for) intensification of scientific and scholarly production/communication and diverse academic processes seem to characterize the overall acceleration of academic life (i.e., in many disciplines the new maxim ‘patent and prosper’ (Schachman) supplements the traditional ‘publish or perish’). Quantification and metrics have emerged not only as navigating instruments paradoxically exacerbating the general dynamization of academic life but also as barely questioned proxies for scientific quality, career progression and job prospects, and as parameters redrawing what it means to be/work as a scholar nowadays (i.e., the shifting parameters and patterns of academic subjectivity). Metrification now seems to be an important interface between labour and surveillance within academic life, with manifold affective implications.

This workshop will inquire into the techniques of auditing and their attendant practices and effects and will also probe into scholars’ complicity in reproduction of such practices. It will consider processes of social acceleration within the academy and their implications for the management of everyday activity by those working within it. This will include:

  • empirical and theoretical engagements with the acceleration of higher education
    the origins of metrification of higher education
    metrification as a form of social control
    the challenges of self-management posed by metrification and/or acceleration
    common strategic responses to these challenges
    the relationship between metrification and acceleration
    how metrification and acceleration relate to a broader social crisis

The workshop will take place in December 2015 in Prague. At present, we’re seeking to clarify the level of interest before determining the length of the event, fixing a date and inviting keynote speakers.
