FEMINIST RESEARCH CONFERENCE

Tuesday 23 July 2013, 0930-1630 – Docklands Campus, University of East London

This one day conference is designed for researchers, academics and PhD students with an interest in feminist theory for research.

The conference will include academics whose research work has covered various perspectives on feminist theory. In addition, there will be breakout groups where participants can choose to take part in discussions on women and the economy, intersectionality and reflexivity.

The day includes:
–    Input on feminist research from speakers.
–    Discussions on women and the economy, intersectionality and reflexivity.
–    Networking opportunities.

Speakers include Dr Kath Browne from the University of Brighton, Professor Yvette Taylor, Social and Policy Studies and  Head of the Weeks Centre for Social and Policy Research, London South Bank University; Professor Christina Hughes of Warwick University. Professor Ann Phoenix from the Institute of Education will also be speaking.

Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

What we are looking for: Poetry (including spoken word), creative non-fiction, memoir, short stories, images of visual art, and other types of writing or visual art that paint a picture of what justice and injustice look like in our schools.

Stories make meaning for us. We can read “scholarly” articles, abstract theories, or collections of research and all of this is important. However, it is the stories, the poems, the music, the memoir, the essays, the fiction, that bring to life all of the information, all of the declarations about what is good, what is not working, what is needed. In this /Voices for Social Justice in Education/ anthology we desire writing that brings the reality of schooling to life. We want poems about 3rd period physics, short stories about recess in the second grade one hot spring afternoon. We want memoir about your best and worst teachers. We want essays about what is working now, at this moment, in your classroom—what makes a difference in the lives of your students, what is making your school a place that students want to be or don’t want to be. We want to know in vivid language, be it from memories or journal entries, in the form of spoken word or in a carefully constructed short story, what social justice means in schools today. What are your hopes and how do they play out? What matters to you when you walk in the door of your building, when you stand up in front of class, when you are late for your last class of the day?

We are writers ourselves. We love language and we know how powerful it can be, how it can move people, to reach those who can make change. We want your words, your language, your passion to help provoke that change.

Guidelines and Specifications for Contributors:
(1) Poets may submit up to 5 poems at once; please submit each in a separate document with your full contact information on /each one /(see #4 below)
(2) Prose writers may submit up to 15 pages
a) Times New Roman 12-pt font
b) Double-spaced
(3) Images of visual art should be submitted in .pdf or .jpg format
(4) Include author/artist name(s) and email address(es) /on each piece submitted/

In times of austerity it is especially important to think about surplus.

All civilizations have been built on surplus – an economic, political or cultural capital over and above a minimum which a given society requires to survive. But how is such surplus defined and measured? How is it produced and distributed? What indeed is the relationship between wealth and waste, excess and poverty, scarcity and conflict?

These and other related questions will be addressed at three interconnected roundtables dealing with scarcity, conflict, demography, precarity, rubbish, democracy and protest. The format will enable genuinely cross-disciplinary conversations on some of the most pressing social phenomena of our day, ranging  from mass unemployment (or ‘redundancy’) to the ‘irrational exuberance’ of financial markets; from ‘imperial overstretch’ of American foreign policy to the ‘social explosion’ among marginalised urban populations across the world.

THE DANIEL SINGER PRIZE

Daniel Singer believed in people taking control of their own lives and forging truly democratic institutions to introduce social and economic justice. He experienced the May–June 1968 explosion in France and the uprisings against oppressive regimes in Eastern Europe, writing “Prelude to Revolution” and the “Road to Gdansk” to chronicle the possibility of genuine popular revolution. A critic of Western capitalism and Eastern Stalinism, his analyses were based on deep knowledge, a biting sarcasm, and a thorough dislike of banal rhetoric. His final work “Whose Millennium: Theirs or Ours” combined his inspiring hopes with an astonishing ability to dissect the workings of power.

The Daniel Singer Foundation is seeking an original essay of no more than 5000 words to address some aspect of the current scene in the spirit that Singer exemplified. The winning essay will receive a prize of $2,500, and may be submitted in English, Spanish or French.

The essays will be judged by an international panel of distinguished scholars and activists, and the winner will be announced in December 2013.

INGO ELBE TRANSLATION PROJECT

Ingo Elbe’s Marx im Westen is the authoritative theoretical history of West German Marxist Theory providing a brilliant and lucid account of the intricacies of the debates over Marx’s theory of Value, the State Derivation debate and Revolutionary Theory. The work is therefore essential for understanding the work of German theorists who have been translated in the Anglophone world such as Michael Heinrich and Heide Gerstenberger as well as the influence these debates had on the Anglophone work of the CSE, Open Marxism, Value-Form Theory and Political Marxism.

Unfortunately, such authority also comes at a price: the book’s length has prohibited any press from being able to translate it. This is why I am soliciting volunteers to translate selections from Marx im Westen in order to make it available to the English reading public.

TEACHING INCLUSIVELY: CHANGING PEDAGOGICAL SPACES

Developing inclusive teaching and learning practices in higher education is a key component of widening participation (WP) strategy. Pedagogies in higher education have the potential to contribute to creating inclusive spaces where all students can develop a sense of belonging and fitting in. This is strongly emphasised in the recent HEFCE/OFFA interim report, and is anticipated to form a central dimension of the national strategy for widening participation.

This timely seminar will launch Teaching Inclusively: Changing Pedagogical Spaces, a new continuing professional development resource pack that draws on the key findings of the Higher Education Academy funded project: ‘Formations of Gender and Higher Education Pedagogies (GaP)’. It is designed for lecturers, academic developers, WP directors and managers and policy makers to critically reflect on the complex processes in which inequalities might unwittingly be reproduced through HE pedagogies.  It offers a range of ‘think pieces’ as conceptual tools to help address complex issues of difference, diversity and inequalities and to consider the ways that teaching and learning practices are intimately connected with identity formations and the subtle processes of exclusion and misrecognition within different pedagogical spaces.

The seminar will provide an overview of the key findings of GaP to illuminate the important relationship between widening participation and HE pedagogies. It will introduce Teaching Inclusively and the ways it has been specifically designed to support HE lecturers in contributing to WP through developing inclusive teaching practices.

“Art” with a Capital “A” and the Practice of Community Art

For forty years the community arts and public arts group, Free Form Arts Trust, (1970-2010) was a significant player in British community arts, playing a major part in the 1970s struggle to carve out a space for community arts in Britain.  Having turned their back on the world of gallery art, the fine-artist founders of Free Form were determined to use their visual expertise to connect, through collaborative art projects, with the working-class people excluded, as they saw it, by the established art world.  To what extent did these artists succeed in making art for, and with working-class people?  How radical was their rejection the world of gallery art, the world of what the art historian Paul Kristeller calls Art with a capital ‘A’?  And what effect did their turn away from the established art world have on their practice as artists, and on their aesthetic language?

Kate Crehan is Professor of Anthropology at the College of Staten Island and the GraduateCenter, City University of New York.  Her publications include The Fractured Community: Landscapes of Power and Gender in Rural Zambia; Gramsci, Culture and Anthropology (translated into Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Korean and Turkish); and Community Art: An Anthropological Perspective.  She is currently working on a book manuscript exploring Gramsci’s concepts of subalternity, common sense and the organic intellectual.
