WHO AND WHAT IS MANAGEMENT FOR?

BSA Postgraduate Conference – ‘Who and what is management for?’

The University of Leicester School of Management is running a one day BSA postgraduate conference on 10 January 2013.

The cost to BSA members is £10, and £25 to non-BSA members. This money goes towards lunch, drinks and a post-conference dinner for all attendees.

Event booking is via the BSA website and must be made by 4 January 2013 at the latest.

About 

The conference is broadly themed around Critical Management, based on the multi-disciplinary ‘Leicester Model’ that draws from across the social sciences. Unlike mainstream Business Schools, at Leicester we are concerned with challenging the status quo and giving voice to those individuals, groups and societies who are traditionally overlooked in global management.

Provisional Programme

The provisional programme is available here.

Themes

1. Equality, diversity and inclusion in the workplace. Building on our global, critical and multi-disciplinary approach we welcome research in the fields of equality, diversity and inclusion in the workplace. Topics might include leadership, diversity, equality, employment law, workplace violence, the career experiences of minorities and the labour process in developing countries. Participants should focus on the values that global management does, or does not, ascribe to difference.

2. Critical finance. Critiques of mainstream macroeconomics, financialisation and modern finance theory are welcome. Suggested topics include global financial reform, post-Bretton Woods institutions, ‘risk-free’ rates of return, stock-flow modelling and central banking theory. Empirical contributions might study alternative economies, or describe financial crises from the perspective of disadvantaged groups.

3. Social studies of management and organisation. Building on Science and Technology Studies, this stream invites contributions in the use of ‘market devices’ and ‘organising devices’; other actor-network approaches; and anthropological, ethnographic and sociological studies of organisations.

 

Respondents and Speakers

Fiona Wilson, Professor of Organisation Behaviour, GlasgowUniversityBusinessSchool

Fiona Wilson’s research focuses on the relationships between men and women at work. She has been involved in research on romance at work, gender and the professions and sexual harassment. She recently finished a project on banks’ lending to male and female business owners.

Malcolm Sawyer, Professor of Economics, Leeds University Business School

Malcolm Sawyer is the author of 11 books, has edited 24, and contributed to over 100 chapters. He has published 90 papers in refereed journals. His research interests are in macroeconomics, fiscal and monetary policy, the political economy of the European Monetary Union, nature of money, causes and concepts of unemployment, and the economics of Michal Kalecki.

Daniel Neyland, Senior Lecturer, Lancaster University Management School

Daniel Neyland’s research interests cover governance, accountability and ethics in the form of science, technology and organization. He draws on ethnomethodology, science and technology studies, constructivism, Actor-Network Theory and the recent STS turn to markets.

Javier Lezaun, Lecturer, Oxford Martin School, University of Oxford

Javier Lezaun’s research interests focus on the legal, political and social dimensions of techno-scientific change, particularly in the life sciences and biomedicine.

 

Getting There

The University of Leicester can be easily reached by rail, bus and road. From the railway station there is almost a traffic free walk of less than a mile.

RESEARCH IN COMPARATIVE AND INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION – CALL FOR PAPERS

CALL FOR PAPERS

During 2013 and 2014 the journal Research in Comparative and International Education (www.wwwords.co.uk/RCIE) commissioned thematic issues on, among other themes, Community Colleges and Post-secondary Institutions Worldwide, International Large-scale Assessment and Cross-national Comparison, Citizenship, and Career Transitions.

Those issues are full, and so no further contributions can be accepted. However, authors are encouraged to submit papers on these and other themes for one of the journal’s general issues. At present the next available issue for successfully reviewed papers is that scheduled for publication in December 2013.

Rouge Forum 2013 Call for Proposals

The core issue of our time is the clash of the real promise for perpetual war and booming inequality met by the potential of connecting reason to power with organized mass class conscious resistance in schools, on the job, in communities, and in the military … and what you do counts!

The Rouge Forum brings together academic presentations and panel discussions, performances, community building, and cultural events. This conference will center on such questions as:

* Overall, what do we need to know and what do we need to do to win against corporate education reform in our classrooms?

* In what ways are our classrooms, schools, universities, unions, etc. occupied by capitalism, the military, racism, inequality?

* And what do these occupations demand from us pedagogically? What are the obstacles that must be overcome to achieve democratic education?

* What can we learn from Wisconsin 2011, the Occupy Movement, and the Chicago Teacher’s Strike to make us smarter and stronger in our struggle against corporate education reform?

* How do we educate to liberate ourselves from the impact of empire? How do we push back against the imperializing of our classrooms and communities?

* How do we occupy our classrooms, schools universities, and unions and communities in an effort to create education that is in the public interests?

Calling on artists … Pop up radical art gallery would be for artists to submit 2-3 D pieces that they can bring with them to the conference to display as part of an opening or Friday / Saturday night reception activity.

CORPORATE CANADA SHAPING INEQUALITY – CANADIAN CENTRE FOR POLICY ALTERNATIVES

The latest study from our Growing Gap project, “A Shrinking Universe: How concentrated corporate power is shaping income inequality in Canada”, links the rise of the richest Canadians with a shift toward more concentrated power within the country’s largest corporations. The study finds that effectively 60 Canadian-based firms are dominating the push for corporate profits, and are accelerating the trend toward inequality.

THE CAMPAIGN AGAINST THE RAND FORMULA

It has been widely reported that Pierre Poilievre, the Federal Conservative MP for Nepean-Carleton, has launched a campaign to change the rules regarding the payment of union dues [See his November 2012 letter to his constituents]. The object of Mr. Poilievre’s ire is the “Rand Formula” – the union security clause found in most collective agreements and labour relations legislation in Canada. Under this formula, no employee in a unionized workplace is required to be a union member, but all have to pay union dues, with the employer deducting the money from the pay checks of all
employees and transferring it to the union.

This dues paying formula was created by Supreme Court Justice Ivan Rand in 1946 when settling a strike between the Ford Motor Company and its workers. At its core is the principle that all those who benefit from the negotiated collective agreement should pay union dues and that there should be no free riders.

SOVEREIGN DEBT CRISIS: OUR SUFFERING IS THEIR ABUNDANCE

Even before Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp swallowed the Wall Street Journal, that newspaper was renowned for its free marketer editorials and opinion pieces. Not only has this policy remained intact under Murdoch, but also the coverage of news and features is now fully in line with the right-wing
editorial policy.

So I was quite surprised a week ago to find, tucked away on page A-11 of the November 30 edition, a piece by the WSJ’s Stephen Fidler that actually hinted at the identity of the real beneficiaries of the bailouts and debt crises:

“Despite the complications, this week’s deal on Greece’s debt points to an (almost) iron rule of sovereign-debt crises: Significant losses fall on taxpayers in creditor countries because debt originally extended by private creditors, one way or another, ends up on the balance sheet of the public sector.”

This sounds eerily like the searing indictment of the bailout in a recent book by York University professor David McNally:

“In short, the bad bank debt that triggered the crisis in 2008 never went away – it was simply shifted on to governments. Private debt became public debt. And as the dimensions of that metamorphosis became apparent in early 2010, the bank crisis morphed into a sovereign debt crisis. Put differently, the economic crisis of 2008-9 did not really end. It simply changed form. It mutated.”

TEN THOUSAND AGHAST AS ‘RIGHT TO WORK’ PASSES IN MICHIGAN

Union protesters in front of the Michigan Capitol today knocked down an enormous tent erected by Americans for Prosperity, the Koch-brothers-funded group that helped bring right to work to the state. State troopers arriving on horseback were helpless, bringing to mind images of Humpty Dumpty and all the king’s men.

Several dozen protesters were sitting down in the Capitol Rotunda, risking arrest, and more were outside the governor’s office. Three school districts were forced to close schools because so many teachers called off for the day.

Four giant inflatable rats in the 10,000-person crowd were named for prominent Republican politicians and their richest backer.

But despite the anger and the chants, the legislature made it official.
