Décalages: an Althusser Studies Journal: Vol.I , Issue 2 is now available

We are pleased to announce that the second issue of Décalages: an Althusser Studies Journal is now available online at www.decalages.net.

The issue includes a previously unpublished text by Althusser, “On Genesis” (1966), in which he explores the concept of a materialism of the encounter. The original French version is accompanied by English, Spanish and Italian translations, as well as an introduction by G.M. Goshgarian.

Also featured are Pierre Macherey’s examination of Judith Butler on the Althusserian theory of interpellation, Won Choi on Zizek’s critique of Althusser’s notion of ideology, Samuel Solomon’s reading of Derrida’s unpublished seminars on Althusser, as well as other articles and reviews.

PREOCCUPIED: The Words, Wounds and Workings of Occupations, Past and Present
Kulturpark Berlin, June 28-29 2012

Pairing the interdisciplinary nature of the Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctoral Programs with the innovation of multimedia storytelling, the PREOCCUPIED 2012 conference offers a platform for academics, activists and artists to challenge the confines of their disciplines: provoking thought, debate, and action on issues that have accelerated to global predominance in light of the recent occupations.

The conference invites papers that consider the various meanings of the word occupy and occupation. The disparate meanings of the increasingly-loaded word will be assembled in panels and a series of talks, interspersed with forays into art and activism, inviting participants to explore the roots of the current occupation movement, and its implications throughout time and place ­ in the realms of work, conquest, and protest.

Hosted by the Kulturpark Berlin, an abandoned DDR theme park, the conference will embody occupation in many ways: from its location, to its catering ­which will feature locally foraged greens and ‘recycled’ foods, courtesy of The Dinner Exchange. In collaboration with the Kulturpark and the 7th annual Berlin Biennale, international visual artists will coexist with the conference participants in the uncanny spaces of the Kulturpark. PREOCCUPIED is an unlikely conference, bringing together a diversity of people and opinions in two stimulating days of art, academics, action and interaction.

We welcome papers that address issues related to Occupation, in the broadest sense of the word. These might consider, but should by no means be limited to:

OCCUPATION OF SPACE
�    Occupation as colonization / decolonization
�    Occupied territories
�    Occupation of online spaces ­ social media and virtual action
�    The city as political space

OCCUPATION OF TIME
�    Occupation as employment, as a calling
�    Occupation in the humanities
�    Preoccupations and professions

THE OCCUPATIONS
�    Occupation as protest
�    Occupation as strategy
�    Occupation as change
�    Occupations worldwide
�    Art as occupation/resistance

Some of the presentations of papers will be video-recorded, and thus a certain use of interactivity, audiovisual materials and storytelling is encouraged. While not all of the talks need be filmed, the goal of creating engaged, concise talks should apply to all. Those that opt to have their talks filmed may see them featured on the conference’s website.

Paper Proposals

Scholars from all areas of the Humanities are invited to submit proposals for contributions. The conference languages are English, French, and German. Proposals may be written in any of the above languages.

We ask prospective participants to submit a short (1-2 page) CV and an abstract (between 250-500 words) that outlines the paper’s topic, methodology and argument, as well as how the prospective participant’s research interests relate to the theme of the conference.

Please note that individuals may submit only one paper proposal, either to the open call or as a part of a pre-constituted panel. Panels should number no more than three people, need not be limited to academics, and must include a single proposal of 500 words and separate CVs for all of the proposed panel members.

The members of the Workgroup “Worlds of Labor” – Brazilian History Association (GT “Mundos do Trabalho” – ANPUH) invite researchers to submit presentation proposals for the VI Labor History Workshop, to be held jointly with the II International “Worlds of Labor” Conference. The event will take place November 27th – 30th Center for Research and Documentation on Brazilian Contemporary History – Getulio Vargas Foundation (CPDOC/FGV), Rio de Janeiro. Presentation proposals must be based on empirical research, theoretical and methodological debates and assessments of the academic production that enable the dialogue with others interested in similar themes.

The Workgroup “Worlds of Labor” – an official section of the Brazilian History Association – has been playing a fundamental role in the diffusion of the increasing Brazilian labor historiography and in fomenting domestic and international inter-exchanges. Since its creation, in 2001, the WG promotes thematic conferences inside ANPUH bi-annual national symposiums and, in alternate years, workshops for researchers in the field. In 2010, the I International “Worlds of Labor” Conference was held jointly to the V Labor History Workshop.

The main aim of this event is to provide for the presentation of research taking place in a variety of academic disciplines about labor history in Brazil and in other parts of the world. We pretend to foment the collaboration between researchers on the field and the discussion of the current agenda for historical studies on the worlds of labor, both at the domestic and at the global fronts. We expect that proposed papers will debate the worlds of labor as broadly and comprehensively as possible.

The VI Labor History Workshops and the II International “Worlds of Labor” Conference will comprise roundtables and coordinated sessions. The round table be composed by invited national and international specialists. The coordinated sessions are open to registration, and proposals can be made either for individual presentations or for complete sessions (with a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 4 participants). Proposals based on interdisciplinary and inter-institutional connections, as well as those involving different countries and regions are particularly welcome.

Format of proposals and registration:

Proposals for individual presentations or for complete sessions must contain a resume of up to 300 words by participant, the title of the presentation, the name and a brief (10 lines) resumed CV of the 
author(s). Proposals for complete sessions must also include the title and resume of the session.

Acceptance letter will provide specific guidelines on the format of the final papers, that must be sent in advance as a condition for concluding the registration process and securing the inclusion of the presentations previously approved in the final program.

Resumes and final papers can be written in Portuguese, Spanish, and English, the official languages of the event.

Emily James spent a year within the environmental movement documenting the clandestine activities of the major players. In this feature documentary, she presents an insider’s account of the new global movement, an independent group funded by volunteers; inspiring, anarchic individuals with inventive strategies challenge the multi-nationals, frustrate the police and create confusion. This film shows what one group of committed individuals can achieve.

Nine men were totally acquitted of their £350,000 criminal damage to the International Arms manufacturer in Derry in 2006. The decision became a legal benchmark; an act of deliberate civil disobedience recognised as a weapon in the fight for peace. This film documents the victory and their solidarity with the people in the Lebanese town of Qana; knowledge of the production of those weapons and their use in the Israeli massacre became an impetus for the men to act.

As the government has announced that it will not seek to pass the HE Bill (based on last summer’s HE White Paper) through parliament until 2015, the Education Activist Network is holding a roundtable discussion with trade unionists, academics and journalists to discuss the way forward in the fight for Higher Education.

The HE Bill, proposed by Universities Minister David Willetts, faces major opposition from academics and HE/FE students, who marched in their tens of thousands against it.

Cameron, Clegg and Willetts do not want to see a repeat of the mobilizations that took place in November/December 2010. One of the reasons the vote is being ‘indefinitely’ postponed is that the government faces significant resistance – UCU’s continued strike action over pensions, the Campaign for the Public University, the No Confidence Campaign as well as growing opposition to the NHS Bill.

This roundtable discussion will aim o build opposition to the trebling of tuition fees, the debt regime and 100% funding cuts to Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, whilst at the same time form the kind of alliance that have the social and economic power to reverse these devastating neoliberal reforms.

Keynote Speaker: Kevin Kumashiro
Kevin Kumashiro is professor of Asian American Studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where he was formerly chair of Educational Policy Studies and interim co-director of the Institute for Research on Race and Public Policy.  He directs the UIC AANAPISI Initiative, funded by $3.9 million from the U.S. Department of Education’s Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander Supporting Institutions (AANAPISI) grants programs.  He has taught in schools and colleges across the United States and abroad, and has consulted for universities, school districts, and state and federal agencies.  He has authored or edited nine books on education and activism, including Troubling Education, which received the 2003 Gustavus Myers Outstanding Book Award; Against Common Sense: Teaching and Learning toward Social Justice; and The Seduction of Common Sense: How the Right has Framed the Debate on America’s Schools.  He is the founding director of the Center for Anti-Oppressive Education, and the president-elect (2010-2012) of the National Association for Multicultural Education.

2012 Conference Overview:

Over the past year, our country and the world have witnessed increasingly visible protests against the influence of private pursuit of profit over our public institutions and interests. This spirit of protest has developed in tandem with the proliferation of spaces for critiquing the injustice of this system and organizing communities of resistance. An ongoing struggle within many of these spaces has been acknowledging the ways in which historical and ongoing racism has caused the pursuit of profit to have far more devastating effects on communities of Color than on White communities. The annual NYCoRE conference seeks to carry out anti-racist work by addressing these disparities in the context of our education system. Our goal is to carry forward the spirit of protest by critiquing the current profit-driven policies and culture of our school system, and specifically identify the ways in which racism is intertwined with those policies. We also seek to be a space for building something new, for taking steps toward the more just, equitable world of which we dream. Through this conference, we hope to build connections, to gain inspiration, and to share practical ideas for creating spaces that work to fight racism rather than ignoring it. To this end, we are seeking workshops that will be of relevance to educators in varied settings that are diverse in their focus topics. Relevant political critiques are welcomed, as are curricular ideas, classroom strategies, presentations on community work, and other ideas for inspiring practice.

Goals of the Conference

* To share information and critical thinking around the conference theme, namely examining the relationship between the influence of private interests and the perpetuation of racial injustice

* To provide stakeholders in the education system with information and new ideas that can strengthen our effectiveness as activists, both within our classrooms (and other sites) and beyond them

* To forge connections between and among educators, researchers, parents, activists, and students, fostering new and innovative partnerships and collaborations

* To develop structures for ongoing discussion and working groups about education and social justice

* To organize a national voice in the ongoing debate over education reform

* To plan actions, advocacy, future meetings

* To bridge the gap between youth and educators by creating a space to make young voices heard.

* To develop and share ideas for inspiring practice, both inside classrooms and in communities

Conference Theme: Education is a Right – Not Just for the Rich or White!

In New York City, public schools have faced merciless budget cuts, resulting in growing class sizes, lack of materials, and huge layoffs. These cuts disproportionately affect schools in communities of Color. Meanwhile, our state and local government continue to award huge contracts to private consulting firms, charter schools, and other corporations. Patterns of resource distribution reveal the values of those making the funding decisions. These patterns are telling in their prioritization of profit over people, as well as in their disregard for communities of Color.

We seek to create opportunities for deepening our understanding of the intersection of racism and the neo-liberal agenda so that we can more effectively organize against them. This is a forum for provocative questioning, for story-telling, for information-gathering, for inspiration, for developing our craft, for activism, for providing new fuel to the ongoing struggle for justice.
