Call for Papers and Participation

14th Annual International Conference on Education, 21-24 May 2012,Athens,Greece

Dr. Gregory T. Papanikos (President of the Athens Institute for Education and Research & Visiting Professor, University of Strathclyde, U.K.) and Dr. Alexander Makedon (Professor, College of Education, Chicago State University, USA & Head of the Education Research Unit of ATINER) would like to invite you to submit a proposal for presentation at the 14th Annual International Conference on Education, 21-24 May 2012, Athens, Greece organized by the Education Research Unit of the Athens Institute for Education and Research (ATINER).

For the program of the pervious conferences, book publications based on the conference papers and other information, please visit the conference website www.atiner.gr/education.htm.

The registration fee is 300 euro, covering access to all sessions, two lunches, coffee breaks and conference material. Special arrangements will be made with a local luxury hotel for a limited number of rooms at a special conference rate. In addition, a number of social events will be organized: A Greek night of entertainment with dinner, a special one-day cruise in the Greek islands, an archaeological tour ofAthensand a one-day visit toDelphi.

The aim of the conference is to bring together scholars and students of education and other related disciplines. You may participate as panel organizer, presenter of one paper, chair a session or observer.

Papers (in English) from all areas of education are welcome.  Selected papers will be published in a Special Volume of the Conference Proceedings or Edited Books as part of ATINER’s education book series.

Announcement of the decision is made within 4 weeks after submission, which includes information on registration deadlines and paper submission requirements.  If you want to participate without presenting a paper, i.e. chair a session, evaluate papers to be included in the conference proceedings or books, contribute to the editing of a book, or any other contribution, please send an email to Dr. Gregory T. The Athens Institute for Education and Research (ATINER) was established in 1995 as an independent academic organization with the mission to become a forum, where academics and researchers – from all over the world – could meet in Athens and exchange ideas on their research and discuss the future developments of their discipline.

Since 1995, ATINER has organized about 150 international conferences and has published over 100 books.

Academically, the Institute consists of four research divisions and nineteen research units. Each research unit organizes at least an annual conference and undertakes various small and large research projects.

Working Lives: Special Issue on Oral History and Working-Class History

Since the 1960s, if not before, labour and working-class history has been closely connected to the practice of oral history. Working-class historians were at the forefront of developments in oral history, often using this method as a means of recuperating the history of those who were less likely to leave archival and written sources. They created written histories, archival collections, museum exhibits and community projects that gave workers, their families and their communities a new voice, and a new place in history. Writing on working-class oral history has also encompassed far more than recovery projects; scholars have enriched the field of oral history by addressing questions about method, theory and approach, by offering critical reflections on our assumptions and expectations about oral history practice. Oral history has similarly enriched the field of working class history, posing new questions, challenging existing interpretations, and diversifying the themes and subjects we study

The Oral History Forum d’histoire orale is currently seeking contributions that engage with oral history and working-class history, broadly defined. This special issue will explore questions of method, theory, approach, and examine the ways in which oral history offers a unique perspective and insights into working class history. University researchers, community organizers, educators, oral historians, public historians, and others who are working in this field are invited to submit theoretical and methodological papers, as well as empirically-based essays based on original research, reviews (books, new media, exhibitions, films, theatrical productions), and discussions for this special edition of the journal. Topics might include (but are not limited to) paid work, unpaid labour, the labour movement, politics, working-class communities and culture, the intersections of gender, race/ethnicity, religion, and class, immigrant and migrant communities, unemployment and poverty, and state interventions in working-class lives. All article submissions will be subject to the normal peer review process of the journal.

The Oral History Forum d’histoire orale is the online journal of the Canadian Oral History Association www.oralhistoryforum.ca which serves as the online meeting place for scholars, community activists, librarians, archivists, and others who use oral history to explore the past. Through this open-access collection we hope to generate discussion on this important theme and provide a valuable resource for people interested in the study of oral history and working-class history, whether in the classroom or in their own research. Articles will be published as soon as they are ready, ensuring a quick turn around time for early submissions, and the collection will be launched in 2012.

2012 INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF CO-OPERATIVES: CANADA2012 WEBSITE LAUNCHED  

Canada now has a new website dedicated to the 2012 International Year of Co-operatives.

The site was created jointly by the Canadian Co-operative Association (CCA), the Conseil canadien de la coopération et de la mutualité (CCCM) and the federal government’s Rural and Co-operatives Secretariat. 

The site is aimed at both the co-op sector and the broader public: its features range from basic information about the co-operative business model and co-operatives in Canada to suggestions on how both individuals and organizations can get involved in the International Year.

QUÉBEC SOLIDAIRE: ON THE BALLOT AND IN THE STREETS

Founded in 2006 by activists from a range of radical left and social movement organizations, Québec Solidaire has built up its public profile around a variety of social, environmental and democratic issues. The party’s member in the Quebec parliament, Amir Khadir, was recently ranked as Quebec’s most popular political personality. In the latest poll, the party rose five points to 17% of voting intentions.

QS leading activist Benoit Renaud will  speak about the experiences of the party,  introduced by a GTWA member who closely follows Québec politics.

What accounts for the relative success of QS in today’s difficult political climate? What are the party’s future prospects? What are the specific factors influencing politics in Quebec, and are there connections between QS’s growing popularity and the NDP’s breakthrough in the recent federal election? Hear BENOIT RENAUD address these and other questions, and participate in the discussion to consider lessons for anti-capitalist projects like the GTWA.

On July 12th, residents & community workers across Scarborough will come together to identify Scarborough’s most pressing issues, and develop a plan to address these issues and to advocate for social investment in Scarborough’s communities. Outcomes of this meeting will be action-oriented.

COULD ELECTION REFORM MAKE A DIFFERENCE?

In the May Federal election, Stephen Harper won a majority government without winning a majority of the vote. Only 39.6 per cent of the population voted Conservative while 60 per cent voted against. Much discussion has focused on the election results and what to do about the Harper majority. But relatively little of this has focused on the electoral system.

ONTARIO THROUGH THE CRYSTAL BALL

This paper is the text of an address delivered to Government of Ontario officials. While asked to speak about possible future trends in Ontario, Michael Mendelson focused his remarks not on familiar trends related to demography and technology but rather on events that we expect may not happen – or at least not in the form we predict. 

The paper considers three imminent threats of concern to Ontario. The first stems from the deepening Euro crisis and whether it will precipitate another global financial meltdown. The second threat is rooted in the economic policy paralysis in the US. Third, Ontario should be concerned about a potential credit collapse if the world commodities bubble begins to deflate.

UNIVERSITIES INCREASINGLY TURN TO CORPORATIONS FOR MUCH NEEDED CASH

Thirty years ago, the Ontario government funded close to 80 per cent of the University of Toronto’s revenue stream. But for the first time this year, it will fund less than 50 per cent.

“Which fundamentally calls into question whether we (still) have public universities at all,” said Faraz Vahid Shahidi, a member of the University of Toronto General Assembly at a panel discussion last Saturday in Toronto.

With chronic underfunding in post secondary education, gaps have emerged that have been filled with soaring tuition fee hikes and private donations.

INTERNATIONAL LABOR ORGANIZATION (ILO) ADOPTS LANDMARK CONVENTION ON RIGHTS
OF DOMESTIC WORKERS

Last month, at the International Labor Organization’s (ILO) 100th annual conference in Geneva, Switzerland, the global community took a major collective step towards achieving economic and social justice for some of the world’s most vulnerable workers with the overwhelming adoption of the ILO Decent Work for Domestic Workers Convention and accompanying recommendation. More than 80 per cent of the world’s governments, workers and employers voted in favor of the convention’s adoption.

In approximately 40 per cent of the world’s nations, the simple recognition of domestic work as work and domestic workers as deserving the same rights and protections that other workers enjoy flies in the face of exclusionary labour laws and social protection regimes.

Canada, unfortunately, is one such country.
