“BEYOND THE CRISIS”

Pre-amble: Following its three previous highly successful international research workshops for students in Crete, Naples and Ankara, the International Initiative for Promoting Political Economy (IIPPE) is now holding its FIRST INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE IN POLITICAL ECONOMY, co-organised with the Greek Scientific Association of Political Economy, and open to application from all engaged in political economy. Summaries of papers for consideration for inclusion (maximum 1000 words) should be submitted by 31st of March 2010 to iippe@soas.ac.uk with subject heading IIPPE CONFERENCE 2010. Full papers are required to be made available by 30 June 2010 for pre-circulation to Conference participants. It will be possible to attend the Conference without submitting a paper but numbers will be limited. There will be some funding available for those who are unable to rely upon institutional support for participation, with special provision for research students.

Themes: Following the global crisis, the prospects of, and need for, progressive political economy are stronger than for many decades. Orthodox economics is in disarray, but with only a smattering of its own practitioners accepting this, generally by demanding more realism and the incorporation of a few more or less arbitrary behavioural principles. After the collapse of the post-war boom, the recession and slowdown that followed gave birth to extreme forms of monetarism followed by a mild reaction in terms of reliance upon market and institutional imperfections and weakened Keynesianism. The prospects for a radical rethink within orthodoxy and of tolerance to heterodoxy remain bleak. But it is still crucial to sustain critical commentary on orthodoxy’s continuing principles and innovations as a new generation of students and researchers are caught between conforming to its reduced and flawed content and the economic realities of the world around them. Political economy has begun to prosper in the wake of the crisis, not least with the rising popularity of Minsky for example. It is imperative that the strengths and weaknesses of the diverse, often insightful, analyses of the nature, causes and consequences of the financial crisis be debated and fully engaged across competing paradigms and emphases. Nor is the crisis confined to economic effects and causes alone. Interdisciplinary approaches are essential to address the nature of, and prospects for, neo-liberalism, the shifting character of the “new world order”, US hegemony and the rise of China, and the economic and the social and cultural restructuring that have both preceded and will follow upon the crisis. This offers opportunities to engage with activists in understanding the impact and incidence of the crisis and in formulating alternatives and strategies in response to it.

The Conference welcomes proposals for papers that address one or more of these issues or any other issue within political economy. IIPPE working groups are entitled to organise a panel. But we also welcome proposals for panels independently of working groups on well-defined themes, with three or four contributions and contributors specified in advance. These must be submitted, ideally with paper summaries by March 31st, 2010, although earlier submissions have greater chance of acceptance as the Conference programme is filled out.

Youth Fight for Jobs LONDON NEWSLETTER

Youth unemployment stands on the verge of 1million – That’s 1 in 5 young people unemployed. Whilst the government can afford to spend billions bailing out the banks it can’t afford to put money into decent jobs and free education for young people. Education offer no alternative to the dole queues – universities are set to increase fees to at least £7,000 per year, putting university out of reach for most ordinary people. For young people that have a job, it often comes with a lower minimum wage, worse conditions and poor contracts.

Youth Fight for Jobs was set up in March to provide an alternative to people who want to fight back against unemployment. We had a launch ‘March for Jobs’ where 600 young people marched through the four poorest boroughs of London demanding decent jobs and conditions. Since then the campaign has grown. We have become the focal point for the media on the fight against youth unemployment and have held activity, fortnights of action, protests against the releasing of unemployment figures, meetings, gigs and stunts.

We have a national demonstration taking place on the 28th November marching under the banner of ‘for real jobs – for free education’. For this demonstration we will be doing activity all over London and would like you to get involved in helping us build the campaign and local groups. See: http://www.youthfightforjobs.com

We are also organising a day of action on the 21st November (the week before the demonstration) where we will be leafleting estates, doing stunts and postering around the route of the demonstration which we would like you to get involved in.

Leo Panitch is the Senior Canada Research Chair in Comparative Political Economy and Distinguished Research Professor of Political Science at York University, Toronto, and the co-editor of The Socialist Register. His most recent books are American Empire and the Political Economy of Global Finance, and Renewing Socialism: Transforming Democracy, Strategy and Imagination.

The Post-14 Network is pleased to announce its latest conference “Recession: Its impact on education, training and learners” taking place at the Institute of Education, University of London.

During this period of extreme financial turmoil it is important that we consider the impact on learners and learning of the structural changes which are an inevitable consequence of the recession. Our panel of expert researchers will lead the conference through the complex interactions of the economy and education.

This important, strategic conference will assess the impact of the recession, the most significant for years, on learners and learning. What, if anything, have we learnt from the last recession? Where will the inevitable cuts impact, and with what consequences? Is there a global aspect to the recession, and how will regions and institutions respond?  How will learners themselves respond to the recession. The conference will explore appropriate responses, and consider curriculum approaches, and institutional structures that are best placed to deal with the consequences of economic and structural change. The conference will conclude with a consideration of the impact on London as a global city.

The annual Historical Materialism conference is organised by the editorial board of Historical Materialism in association with the Deutscher Memorial Prize committee and the Socialist Register. The conference has become an important event on the Left, providing an annual forum to discuss recent developments on the agenda of historical-materialist research and has attracted an increasingly high attendance over the past four years. The Editorial Board of Historical Materialism welcomes attendance and active engagement in discussion with panellists from new as well as prior participants with an interest in critical-Marxist thought.

One of the principal objectives of the conference has been to build bridges among the various Marxist communities, including the breaking down some of the linguistic and intellectual barriers which continue to hamper the circulation and expansion of critical-Marxist thought. The sixth annual Historical Materialism Conference, under the banner of ‘Crisis, Struggle and Political Alternatives’, promises to continue and take forward this objective.

The conference is organised around three plenary sessions (the Deutscher lecture, the launch of the Socialist Register 2010, and Historical Materialism’s plenary) and a host of workshops dedicated to specific themes.

CRACK CAPITALISM – A DISCUSSION WITH JOHN HOLLOWAY

At the height of the anti-capitalist movement, John Holloway’s book Change The World without Taking Power _<http://libcom.org/library/change-world-without-taking-power-john-holloway>_provoked an international debate*. Eight years later, after the failure of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, combined with the failure of the capitalist economy, anti-capitalism is back on the agenda.

John Holloway will introduce his forthcoming book, Crack Capitalism, followed by a discussion on how we can change the world without repeating the tragedies of twentieth century socialism.
