MICHAEL JACKSON – SHAME ON SOCIETY

Ruth Rikowski’s reaction to the death of Michael Jackson on her blog ‘Serendipitous Moments’, see: http://ruthrikowskiim.blogspot.com/2009/06/michael-jacson-shame-on-society.html

Following the death of my father last February, the music of Michael Jackson has helped my youngest son, Gregory, to move beyond the aftermath and to move on.  Michael Jackson’s music also helped Ruth too in this respect.

Greg and Ruth had tickets to see Michael at the O2. They are both shocked and saddened at the death of Jackson.

Insurgentes – Steven Wilson

As those familiar my MySpace Blog, Wavering on Ether* will know, I am a keen fan of the music of Porcupine Tree and Steven Wilson. I bought Wilson’s first solo album Insurgentes two days ago and have since been entranced by the music. I recommend most highly this album; not only to PT and Wilson followers but to all those that like beauty, towering craftsmanship, social edge, prescience, glorious dreams and images, and care and advanced skill with production in their music.

The words “musical genius” can sometimes be thrown around lightly. However, for me, they would not be misplaced regarding the works of Steven Wilson. Insurgentes includes the dynamic and kaleidoscopic percussion work of Gavin Harrison, and a most welcome contribution from Dave Stewart on one track.

Eighteen months ago, I wrote Fear of a Blank Planet Revisited. This was inspired by and, to some extent based on, the lyrics of Porcupine Tree’s Fear of a Blank Planet album. The article shows how the B Generation of policymakers and lawgivers have visited chaos and burdens on the youth of today**.

Cling

Cling are an exciting band, and one of my MySpace friends. I have seen them live, and they are great performers. I received this message from Cling a few days ago.

A message from Cling’s Susi Lavender

We have been very busy of late preparing for our first festival appearance @ The Cosmic Puffin. We have remixed, remade, remodelled and even come up with some new tunes for the occasion. We had to get two VJs for the gig in case one let us down, and low and behold one let us down, we must be getting the hang of this, and now I have three weeks to finish it all off and get it working on the brand new laptop that arrived this morning that is running Vista, and we have a new cat so life is very hectic at the moment.

Anyway we are appearing on Easter Sunday April 12th 2009, we are the last band on so basically we are the end of festival party come Chillout band so we intend to party and chill like never before and armed with my new laptop and sound card with 10 outputs the sound should be excellent.

We have also uploaded our debut CD Sonic Spells to Aimie Street and at the moment you can download it FREE, here is a link

http://amiestreet.com/music/cling/

Lastly if you have not seen it yet you can view our new video on YouTube and here is a link to it: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=3F2Li5KySMY

It has been watched collectively over 1000 times so it seems to have gone down well.

Hope to see as many of you as possible at The Cosmic Puffin

Jammin for Inclusion: Benefit Concert for Communities Empowerment Network

Ms Dynamite, Bashy, Linton Kwesi-Johnson and Maroon Town come together at Brixton’s ‘Jamm’ on March 25th to celebrate and raise funds for the work of Communities Empowerment Network (CEN), a London based charity.

CEN has spent the last 10 years reintegrating excluded pupils back into mainstream education.  CEN deals with an average of 500 exclusion cases a year and has a virtually 100% success in reintegration.

In 2001, Martin Narey, then Director of the Prison Service, stated that ‘the 13,000 children being excluded from school each year might as well be given a ticket to join the prison system somewhere down the line’.  In just about every urban area in Britain, young black people are disproportionately represented in the prison system relative to their numbers in the local population.

Ms Dynamite, Bashy  and Linton Kwesi-Johnson
have put their name to this event because they want to highlight the success of CEN in getting permanently excluded pupils back into mainstream, full-time education as well as acknowledge the immense potential that exists in today’s youth by being on hand to meet and chat to young people.

Ms Dynamite: R&B and hip song singer-rapper, Mercury Music Prize, double Brit Award and three times MOBO Awards winner. Currently back in business with a new track ‘Bad Gyal’ 2009 is setting up to see a lot more of one of the UK’s finest

Ashley Thomas AKA BASHY is the hottest artists to emerge in a brand new wave of fresh and exciting British UK musical talent. With over I million hits on youtube for both tracks released independantly in 2008,  an appearance at last years Glastonbury, 2009 promises to be a huge year for this outstanding talent with the release of his first album ‘Catch Me If You Can’

Linton Kwesi-Johnson: is known and revered as the world’s first reggae poet and has recorded several classic reggae albums. He recently became only the second living poet and the first Black poet to have his work published in Penguin’s Modern Classics series under the title ‘Mi Revalueshanary Fren’

Maroon Town: 9 piece globe trotting ska barnstormers who amongst normal band activities also play in high security prisons from Jamaica to Kazakhstan. In May they are off to Tajikisan to perform and collaborate with local artists.

DJ Gerry Lyseight co-founded Brixton’s mythical Mambo Inn; DJed around the world; at festivals such as Glastonbury, Womad and The Big Chill; with everyone from Tito Puente to King Sunny Ade; compiled many albums; hosted radio programmes featuring everyone from Charlie Watts to Rufus Wainwright to Mr. Scruff to Bebel Gilberto to the late Kirsty MacColl.

Some of the young people CEN has supported and reintegrated back into full time education will also perform.

The evening’s compere will be Eugene Skeef composer, poet, percussionist and workshop leader.

Date:    Wednesday 25th March 2009

The Yumyum Tree – a new album by Ozric Tentacles

The Ozric Tentacles return with their new studio album The Yumyum Tree.

The album is available from April 27th but can be pre-ordered now from The Yumyum Tree mini-site at http://www.snappermusic.com/ms/ozrictentacles/theyumyumtree/ .
All orders placed through this site will receive a free A2 poster with their CD.

The mini-site also offers a sneak preview of the album by way of a free mp3 download of the new track Mooncalf.

One of the most influential bands to emerge from the UK’s festival scene, the Ozrics layer ambient and ethereal landscapes with freeform dub trips, incredible rave grooves and psychedelic progressive rock. It’s an open exploration of music and the soul.
For over 25 years, the Ozrics have experienced the vicissitudes of the rock and roll life. The band has flourished through a number of line-up changes, spawned several side projects (including Eat Static and Nodens Ictus), created their own record label (Dovetail & Stretchy), put out close to 25 albums, scored a hit record and sold over a million albums world-wide. And yet, the basic motivation behind the band’s existence has never wavered.

A campfire at the Stonehenge free festival in 1983 witnessed the birth of Ozric Tentacles. It was there that synth player Joie Hinton, stumbled upon brother’s Ed Wynne (guitar) and Roly Wynne (bass), performing in a band known at the time as Bolshem People, along with drummer Nick ‘Tig’ Van Gelder (Jamiroquai). From that very first jam session, a musical compatibility was evoked that has since been a trademark of the Ozric Tentacles. It’s a signature blend of hippy aesthetics and raver electronics with spiralling guitars, textured waves of keyboard and midi samplers, and supergroovy bass and drum rhythms.

The Yumyum Tree is their new studio album first since 2006’s The Floor’s Too Far Away and follows on from the last year’s CD & DVD set, Sunrise Festival.

Thought Becomes Realityby Circulus

CIRCULUS ALBUM APPEAL/DECLARATION OF LOVE

Dear friends,

I’m sure many of you are aware of the sorry state of the music industry and how much harder it is now to release albums, with major labels teaming up with mobile phone companies and all that desperate nonsense.

We have recorded our third album and many of those who have heard it say it’s the best one yet. Rather than giving it away to some record label we have chosen to release on our own label Mythical Cake (can anyone spot the anagram?)

We have called it “Thought Becomes Reality”. The artwork and songs follow a 2012 theme. In order to meet production costs and bring this album to you we are launching an exciting appeal.

The inside of the CD booklet depicts a drawing of a large extraterrestrial craft. There are portholes along the side of the craft. If you can help us launch this album we will show your photograph peering out of one of the portholes. You will be journeying with us and you will have made this flight possible.

Here it is, take it or leave it. Fifty pounds a seat. We will also send you three advanced copies well before its official release in March 2009.

Please forward this message on!

Love Circulus
A huge thank you to
Spiral Earth for their generous donation towards the craft.

My friend and colleague in the School of Education at the University of Northampton, Neil Southwell has been playing rock music for some years now. Indeed, he used to play professionally in a band.

He has a new web site called Rock’n’Neil where you can hear some of his latest compositions.
