Worker-owned Cooperatives: A niche in capitalism or a pathway beyond?

Worker-owned Cooperatives have an ambiguous relationship to capitalism as an economic system. On the one hand, worker coops constitute a distinctive organizational form that occupies a small niche compatible with a well-functioning capitalist economy. On the other hand, worker-owned and managed firms violate in fundamental ways the class character of capitalism by being organized on democratic egalitarian principles. This contradictory relationship between cooperatives and capitalism poses an important question for critics of capitalism: To what extent could worker cooperatives ever constitute a significant component of an alternative to capitalism?

This lecture, hosted jointly by Oxford University’s Centre for Mutual and Employee-owned Business, Public Policy Unit and Centre for the Study of Social Justice, will explore worker-owned cooperatives, as a case of what Wright terms ‘real utopias‘. It will feature a response by Prof Stuart White (Politics) and be chaired by Dr. Will Davies (Centre for Mutual and Employee-owned Business).

BILL WEINBERG SPEAKS ON ECOLOGICAL CAMPESINO RESISTANCE IN PERU

The Libertarian Book Club,* New York City’s oldest continuously active anarchist institution (founded 1946), kicks off a new season of its Anarchist Forum series as World War 4 Report editor Bill Weinberg, just returned from Peru where he was on assignment for The Progressive, speaks about the Quechua indigenous struggle against US-backed mining projects and in defense of land, water and autonomy in the Andes.

The high Andean region of Cajamarca has been repeatedly paralyzed by general strikes and angry protests in recent months by Quechua peasants opposed to the US-owned Conga gold mining project, which would mean the destruction of mountain lakes that protect the watersheds that local communities depend on for agriculture. Cajamarca’s regional government, with the support of the peasant movement, has declared against the project – but the central government in Lima remains intransigent, and is militarizing the region. The lines are drawn for a protracted struggle.

This is a sequel to the strikes and uprisings in Peru in 2009 over oil and mineral development plans tied to the new Free Trade Agreement with Washington – itself an echo of the Zapatista revolt in Mexico that followed the enactment of NAFTA. Peru is now Latin America’s second country to be pushed to crisis by an FTA with the US – and South America’s second largest recipient of US military aid after Colombia. Bill Weinberg will discuss the new peasant struggle in Peru, how US corporate interests are pushing President Ollanta Humala towards a hard line, and the prospects for building solidarity.

Although humanism was an important theme in Marx’s writings, in recent years radical thought has often rejected all forms of humanism, confusing socialist humanism with liberal or even conservative humanist narratives of individual agency in a Eurocentric context. This series will explore varieties of socialist humanist thought, from Marx’s own humanist writings extending through later socialist humanist thinkers like Jean-Paul Sartre, Frantz Fanon, Erich Fromm, E. P. Thompson, Lucien Goldmann, and Raya Dunayevskaya.  In so doing, we will look at the challenges to humanism that have emerged from movements of the Left and from structuralist and post-structuralist thinkers like Louis Althusser, Michel Foucault, Edward Said, and Antonio Negri, some of them connected to Maoism as well.  We will also consider whether socialist humanism offers grounding for a contemporary radical politics that moves us beyond resistance and toward real human emancipation.

Speaker: KEVIN ANDERSON

Kevin Anderson teaches Sociology, Political Science, and Feminist Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He has written on Marx, Hegel, the Frankfurt School, Foucault, and the Orientalism debate. His most recent books are Foucault and the Iranian Revolution (with Janet Afary, 2005) and Marx at the Margins (2010). He is a member of the U.S. Marxist-Humanists.  His presentation will concentrate more on the philosophical side of these debates.

In this ISKO UK and BCS joint meeting, we will hear from experts about the current geospatial information landscape and its challenges, some of the standards and frameworks that have been put into place to ensure interoperability and the potential for linking data. We will also hear how some users of GIS systems have applied them in their own organizations.

The event is free to ISKO and BCS members and to full-time students. The fee for non-members is just £40, payable in advance. Registration opens at 1.45, immediately following the ISKO UK AGM, and we shall start promptly at 2 p.m.

World-leading Marxist economist to speak at UW-La Crosse

One of the world’s leading Marxist economists will speak about the world’s current economic crisis during a UW-La Crosse presentation.

Prabhat Patnaik speaks on “Alternative Perspectives on the Global Economic Crisis” at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, in the Hall of Nations in Centennial Hall. A reception will follow. The presentation is free, but donations will be accepted to fund future international scholar speakers through the UW-L Foundation’s Ambassador’s Roundtable Account.

One of the world’s leading Marxist economists will speak about the world’s current economic crisis during a UW-La Crosse presentation.
